Call Your Sister
Alex
Call Your Sister is a podcast for related and unrelated sisters or CYS everywhere co-hosted by Alexandra Hodge and Astrid Ferguson. Every week, Alex and Astrid call each other to discuss the complexities of motherhood, sisterhood, identity struggles, dating as a single mother, sex and much more. We’re real Latinx sisters who are fiercely opinionated, and not afraid to realtalk each other about everything from (men)strual cycles and body shaming to the Platanos versus Yuccas debates and current identity life drama. We highlight women who are both trying to keep it together and got it all figured out. We also care deeply about the lived experiences of BIPOC and Lantinx women who are just trying to get through the week. We’re here for every facet of women’s humanity because we are a community, a nation of CYS everywhere.

Toxic Relationships Pt.2
Call Your Sister
08/26/20 • 74 min
Listen to this episode and see if any of the 24 signs we share from the Women's Health Mag article applies to you (article linked further down). Often, we tolerate being in toxic relationships because we are the last to know or we could be the toxic one in the relationship. Relationships are complex because of the people in the relationship. Relationships are simple, people not so much. Take time to identify where toxicity could be developing from in your life and see if you are creating more excuses to continue the toxic cycle. Send us what signs resonates with you the most on our socials listed below.
Once you listen to the episode ask yourself the following questions: How has your troublesome childhood influenced how you function in relationships? Are you creating excuses for them? Are you blaming your parents for your adult behaviors? Let us know if you agree with Lauren Hill's daughter perspective. We would love to hear from you. On this episode we also share an update on the Breonna Taylor and Vanessa Guillen. To read the articles we share follow the link below:

Are you more like Malcolm or Marie or Both?
Call Your Sister
02/24/21 • 79 min
In today's episode Astrid and Alexandra discuss the infamous Netflix movie Malcolm and Marie. This episode contains spoiler alerts as we discuss a few scenes in detail. So don't listen if you haven't watched Malcolm and Marie on Netflix.
Malcolm and Marie is a black and white film about a filmmaker (Malcolm) who returns home with his girlfriend (Marie) following a celebratory movie premiere as he awaits what's sure to be imminently critical and a financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love. This film is played by Zendaya and John David Washington.
If curious about your reactions in combative situations with your significant other, we recommend watching this film as a cross-comparison. In this episode, we discuss some Malcolm and Marie scenes--resurfaced some past relationships and experiences, our own combative tendencies during points of conflict, how our upbringing interplays in whether we react as Malcolm or Marie, and what we would have done differently. Some psychological terms we reference are pursuer and distancer (withdrawer) interactions and the burnout withdrawal symptom. We highlight the absolute don't-do's in arguments to avoid permanently deterring long-term relationships and much more. So listen on as we break down these patterns and share our own experiences in being Malcolm , Marie or both.

Author Nancy Burke Invites Us Into Only The Women Are Burning
Call Your Sister
12/02/20 • 58 min
In this episode we talk with Nancy Burke who is the author of Only the Women Are Burning. A classical and first book of its kind. She blends mystery, science and fabulism into her newest debut. We have a little fun discussing her writing process and what inspired the story. A story about sisterhood and searching to uncover hidden truths. A story that we could all relate to and inspire one another to indulge.
In Nancy Burke’s “Only the Women are Burning” (Apprentice House Press, October 1, 2020) three women are eclipsed by flames in a single morning, one at a commuter train, one at a school, one while walking her dog in the woods. The authorities decide the burning women are members of a cult, but when Cassandra learns her former best friend died in the fiery phenomenon she refuses to accept that explanation. A mom and former anthropologist, Cassandra finds herself wrapped up in the mystery of these fiery deaths, searching for a solution. As she delves into this strange episode in her once safe suburban New Jersey town, she must also face some buried truths of her own.
Part mystery, part science fiction, part suburban domestic novel, Burke’s “Only the Women are Burning”asks important questions about women in contemporary suburban lives. Fans of Margaret Atwood, Naomi Alderman, Meg Wolitzer, and Rebecca Solnit will enjoy this striking novel for both its poetic prose and the biting social commentary within.

Why Social Media Anything?
Call Your Sister
10/27/21 • 54 min
In this episode sisters Astrid Ferguson and Alexandra Hodge discuss social media, Facebook and Instagram to be precise. What is going on with Facebook and why do they continue to sell customer data without permission?
How the algorithm changes and profit before human concern is the sole driver behind social media (giants like Facebook). Remaining on the app to sell us things is the apps main objective, while making a ton of money on small business owners trying to develop a community/business. So what’s the solution?
We raise the question; should we really be on social media? What are we gaining from social media and is it worth it?

What’s codependency, money limiting beliefs, scarcity vs abundance mindset and how could this be affecting our Latinidad?
Call Your Sister
09/02/20 • 58 min
In this episode Astrid Ferguson and Alexandra Hodge discuss... Breonna Taylor - Lebron James wore a MAGA modified hat to have her murders arrested. She was published on the cover of Vanity Fair. But no updates on her actual case has been made public. Vanessa Guillen - no updates on her case besides she was laid to rest last week. A news article revealed—not only is it alleged sexual harassment, she was killed on base and everyone is stating they don’t know anything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVqtAojfo3w
Codependency- what is it and how does it show up for you? “Codependency is typically discussed in the context of substance use, where one person is abusing the substance, and he or she depends on the other person to supply money, food, or shelter. But codependency is much broader than that,” says Jonathan Becker, DO, an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. (https://www.everydayhealth.com/emotional-health/do-you-have-a-codependent-personality.aspx )
What are 8 signs of codependency and how may it be showing up for you? Listen to this episode and check to see how it can manifest in your relationships and in your inability to let go of people.
Let’s talk money and our Latinidad. The big R word “responsibility.” The need to constantly take care of others before ourselves and revisit the abundance vs scarcity mind shift. Learn in this episode the varying degrees of both and other limiting beliefs we carry around money.

Honoring the 20th Anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Call Your Sister
04/07/21 • 61 min
In this episode Astrid Ferguson and Alexandra Hodge discuss the topic most of us avoid, sexual assault. This year marks the 20th anniversary of sexual assault awareness month. Yes, it has only been 20 years since this topic has been publicly discussed.
The Violence Against Women's Act was signed in 1994 and it was a movement primarily pushed by women of color. Prior to this act, sexualt assualt and domestic abuse against women was not considered a crime. That is why we share in this episode the importance of knowing what is considered sexual assault, what is consent and how to have the sensitive conversation.
The most common question that is always asked to survivors is what were they doing. Have you ever wondered what survivors were doing prior to being sexually assaulted? If you have, see the statistics below so survivors are no longer asked this question when they are trying to articulate the details of sexual assault.
- 48% were sleeping, or performing another activity at home
- 29% were traveling to and from work or school, or traveling to shop or run errands
- 12% were working
- 7% were attending school
- 5% were doing an unknown or other activity
We know! It's crazy! So listen to all the information shared from RAINN and Marshall University. If you think you have been sexually assaulted and want more information please click on the links below that we used to provide you with as much detailed information as possible.
