In burnout, we adopt a rather pessimistic view of ourselves, our performance and the people we work with. We often worry excessively - I'm sure you know what I mean! And the more exhausted we become, the worse our people experience get, until finally we withdraw and isolate.

As leaders, we might be tempted to ..ahem.. over-manage our teams, but in fact the greatest success is much more likely to come from teaching them to self-manage and letting their collective creative genius rip!
Here we will talk about the 3 steps to building effective self-managed teams, which are: Letting go of micro-management and the disempowering urge to solve your team's problems for them; Hiring people for the right attitude, or empowering the people you have to rise to the occasion; and Training them how to successfully self-manage in a productive and cohesive way.
Once you have your people self-managing, and they know how they got there, you can continually raise the bar on what they can achieve. They will now be working for you, instead of you working for them.

Anxiety is the main axis around which all the other symptoms of burnout revolve and it's especially so for leaders, whose distress might be amplified by the distress of the people they lead.
Many of us are promoted into leadership without much training, and rarely do we receive instruction on how to lead high-performing teams. So it's likely that however we worked prior to leadership is how we fundamentally still work, but with added responsibility and anxiety.
The question we can ask ourselves then is not HOW we want to lead but WHO we want to be, as leaders.
So today, I'm addressing the stigma of leadership anxiety, how to relate to it and how to manage it.

Why did you start this show?
I started the Burnout to Leadership podcast to help executives, leaders and professionals to recover from burnout. I did this because effective solutions to burnout are not widely available, yet burnout is on the rise and has hit pandemic proportions. If you have burnout, it CAN be fixed, by tackling the experiences of burnout at the root cause level. Headline symptoms include chronic stress, anxiety, overwork, overwhelm, frustration, exhaustion, low motivatation and engagement.
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
Pratical tips to overcome the symptoms of burnout. In each episode you will learn more about what burnout is, why you have it and what you can do to feel better each day. If you have burnout, listen in for the exercises that improve your day to day mood and function.
Which episode should someone start with?
Start with epsiodes 1-5, which are "Burnout 101" - so you can identify if you have burnout, why you have it, why you haven't been able to fix it yet, and exactly how to start your burnout recovery. Anxiety, the biggest problem of burnout, is tackled in episode 4 - with actionable tips you can use right now to reduce your anxiety.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
I work with men in burnout, so that they can step (back) into productive, connecting and powerful heart-centred leadership. It's all about releasing the wonderful leader trapped within them, so they can thrive and support others in their world.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I worked in software and leadership for my first career, and it was wonderful and successful - I loved the challenges and technical dventures. BUT... in 2017 my own burnout exploded after a series of difficult jobs, and I lost my mojo. I quit my job to preserve my life and health, but shortly after I had a major heart attack that nearly took me out. I don't want anyone else to suffer this way, so because I was an energy healer already, I added coaching and bumped that up to my fulltime job.
