I got a smug and sarcastic question from a subscriber, but I decided to give a serious answer...

I put out some notes over the weekend on The Death of Copywriting.

And yeah, I believe it’s a very real risk that AI is quickly replacing the technical skill of copywriting...

In fact, I don’t think it’s long before AI will churn out better copy than the world’s best copywriters, on a consistent basis.

(Especially if it’s given data about what works and what doesn’t.)

But of course there’s the smart-ass in the back row, who only wants to heckle but pretends he’s having a conversation...

“If AI is so good at copywriting, why are you writing your own emails? Huh? Huh?”

And while the heckler doesn’t want or deserve a response, I think the question raises an interesting point.

So that’s what I talked about in today’s episode.

A good upsell is an easy way to make a lot more money from the same customers, same ad spend, same traffic...

You can generate a lot more sales and revenue without spending another dollar on advertising or traffic...

In fact, a good upsell — vs. no upsell or a bad one — can be the difference between a profitable funnel and one that stinks.

So — how do you write a good upsell?

Well, there’s an easy upsell copywriting formula that actually comes from BEFORE the internet...

That I know dates back to Gary Halbert and Dan Kennedy selling by direct mail (and probably way before) and I’ve seen recently from Justin Goff, and that’s a variation on what I’ve frequently used myself.

So yes, it works splendidly online, but can also work offline in many contexts, too.

And while I originally intended this to be a “Best of 2022,” I immediately realized I had to bend the 2022 filter criteria because I wanted to make sure to include Chris.

Here’s the thing...

Chris Wright and I go way back. He was one of my very first copywriting coaching clients.

He came to Nebraska in 2014, to hang out at my Advanced Direct Response Copywriting workshop.

He was definitely under 21 at the time — but don’t tell the Sommelier who hosted our paired wine and Indian food dinner!

I’ve watched his rapid ascent to A-list copywriter ever since.

He rocked it with a gig at Money Map Press, one of the most successful Agora divisions.

He went on to create more wins in financial, health, and beyond — both as a copywriter and offer owner.

And now he runs an innovative direct response agency unlike any I’m familiar with — as you’ll hear in this interview.

He was one of my students, and now I respect him as a peer, and sometimes boss.

Because yes, some of the client work I’ve done in the past 12 months has been through Chris and his agency, and I will happily work under him on projects any day of the week.
