BOMcast!
gonzo
Gonzo, Bronze, Cara, and occasional guests present a reactionary reading of the first edition of the Book of Mormon devoid of a religious context. Join us weekly as we read and react to the text of this book that has been identified as a singular work: it's the only book all educated people know about but have not read.

Episode 19 with Dan
BOMcast!
04/05/23 • 44 min
Dan joins us again (Episode 13) and immediately we’re dealing with God’s obsession with some man’s rod—Jessie’s rod. We learn of children playing on Asp-holes and putting their hands on the fabled cockatrice’s den. This mythical beast inspires Bronze to break out in song! “Put your hand on the cockatrice’s den” is a song for the ages. But it doesn’t end there. We get into the esoterica surrounding Egyptian butt plugs and Mr. Tumnus from Narnia makes an appearance.

Episode 11 with Kate
BOMcast!
12/08/22 • 46 min
Gonzo, Bronze, Cara, and the lovely Kate chew on Second Nephi Chapter 1 Part 1. We dive into quite the scene; Lehi's on his deathbed doling out judgments and passive aggressions to his sons (sorry daughters!). Bronze makes the keen observation that this is probably not GOT but Keeping up with the Kardashians. Looking at this narrative through the lens of reality TV makes so much more sense.

Episode 8 with Aaron
BOMcast!
11/10/22 • 53 min
Gonzo, Bronze, Cara, and Aaron progress through Nephi Chapter 4 Part 2 thru Chapter 5 Part 1, stopping regularly to chuckle at the incomprehensible length of Nephi's diatribes. We get it, Nephi, you're right, and everyone else is wrong. Let this be a lesson to all of us would-be memoirists: get an editor and trust them to make you look good. You risk becoming the villain of your own story if only because your readers tire of your indulgence.
Nephi somehow gets the merry crew of promise-land seekers safely across many waters in a boat these city-goers built themselves 🤔 or at least one they obtained. The party boat quickly became an ascetic meditation cruise, and our travelers were only too happy to be off it.
#godballchallenge make you (or task AI to make you) a God ball like the one Lehi found outside his tent
#bompartyboat draw this boat Nephi made of "curious workmanship" and tag us. We are offering prizes and likes.

Episode 7 with Sean
BOMcast!
11/10/22 • 51 min
Gonzo, Bronze, Cara, and Sean dig into Nephi Chapter 4 Part 1 and are surprised and delighted to read about some high-concept sci-fi tech left outside Lehi's tent; a brass ball with compass-like abilities and dynamically etched writing that anyone can read! This is a game-changer. Add this sci-fi tech to Nephi's uncanny prophecy, and we've got the makings of a sprawling sci-fi fantasy!
Listeners, listen to the description of this God-ball and send us your best sketch or a sketch you tasked AI to create.

Episode 4 with Ben
BOMcast!
10/12/22 • 56 min
Gonzo, Bronze, and Cara dive into this vision-packed second chapter in Nephi. We try to unpack a vision of a rod of iron that follows a path to fruit without leaning too heavily on homoerotic parallels. The opportunities for Freudian interpretations abound. Ben and Bronze admit to finally mistrusting Nephi and Cara opens the door to blaming Sariah, the mother, for Nephi's obvious character flaws.

Episode 2 with Ben
BOMcast!
09/28/22 • 40 min
In this episode Gonzo, Ben, and Bronze read and react to the first book in the Book of Mormon called The First Book of Nephi (Pages 5-9). Who is this Nephi character? Is he an opportunist, does he really come to believe his father, and is his father well (I mean mentally)?

Episode 24 Lehi's Dream
BOMcast!
07/11/23 • 39 min
Gonzo talks to Mike (Mormons on Mushrooms) about Lehi's Tree of Life dream. Mike is our first, and hopefully, not last expert on BOMcast. His background in depth psychology, dream analysis, his penchant for the absurd, and his delightful laugh serve him very well as he helps us explicate this crazy dream.
We cover it all:
- Party mansion on the hill? Check!
- Smiter in the sex dungeon? Check!
- Iron rod as a phallic symbol? Check!
- Tree of life and magic fruit? Check!
But we go into new territory too! Mists of darkness in the valley; could they be a vaginal reference and/or a nod to the divine feminine? Is Lehi projecting and placing a bunch of negative self-image onto his eldest son, Laman? Is this dream actually a beautiful metaphor of self-love and masturbation? Cum-on! you know it is!

08/18/23 • 47 min
Mike and Cousin Sterling help us put a nail in The Book of Jacob Chapter iii and not a moment too soon. This has to be the worst parable ever. It's like a Martha Stewart had a breakdown and started maiming olive trees to get back at an ex kind of vibe. Also, did you know that Avatar blue is the bitterest color in the universe? Of course, you did.
But also, that might make it even more brilliant. Joseph writes this sad sack, street dwelling, chronic masturbater in Jacob, and Jacob gives us the worst parable. If you think about it even a little bit, it messes with you 'cause that's what a genius would do!

Episode 29 with Mindy
BOMcast!
09/01/23 • 49 min
Oil wrestling or mud wrestling? That's really all we need to figure out. I mean, there's an obvious choice, but Bronze skips over that and gets dirty.
Look, we know it can't be easy to make brass plates in pre-columbian Panama but it feels like Jacob's lack of initiative has been passed on to every one of his descendants. Nephi must have known this and wanted the sweetest gigs for his kids. Be king, young man. Younger brother, uh, how about "Prophet"?
I really want to see these plates. You know the last few pages of Nephi's "small" plates must have had tiny little characters scribbled in the margins, barely legible. I mean I get it. Enos had to choose be hunting, fishing, mud wrestling, or keeping a journal. We all know which of these hobbies had to be tossed aside. Thankfully, like a million people give it absolutely no effort in this book.
From a narrative perspective, this is genius, if a little lazy. I mean, we went from 122 pages of Nephi to less than a quarter of that for Jacob. Enos can only manage to go for a page before bidding adieu! But this ain't nothing compared to what's next. Get ready for some "I was here, now fuck off" in the book of Jarom.

Episode 1 Pilot with Gonzo & Ben
BOMcast!
09/23/22 • 20 min
In this pilot episode recorded to test our audio equipment Gonzo & Ben read and react to the title page, the trademark page, and the preface. We were delighted with the tone and content of the preface; we are pretty sure than neither of us had ever read it before and it's quite the experience to see this book through new eyes.
