Biohacking News by Zestology - Matthew Walker on Sleep #231

Matthew Walker on Sleep #231

07/29/19 • 53 min

I met one of the world's foremost sleep researchers and experts, Matthew Walker at his Airbnb in London when he was over recently. Ironically, his rented flat was opposite Tiger Tiger which closes at 4am. So the world’s top sleep guru hadn’t had a great night’s sleep.

It was the perfect chance for him to talk me through his own sleep schedule, as well as look at other important sleep issues including;

  • The best time to go to sleep
  • The optimum way to prepare in the final hour before bed
  • The perils of bad sleep (frankly terrifying)
  • How to deal with insomnia
  • Sleep tips for parents (I need these)
  • The importance of bright light exposure.
  • The truth about sunglasses (surprising - if you are a sunglasses wearer make sure you listen)
  • Getting the temperature right in your bedroom. (Clue - the older you get, the cooler it needs to be.)

I’m sure that after listening to this you’ll change more than one thing about your bedtime routine. And if you enjoy it, perhaps you’ll share it with someone else you know who could do with a better night’s sleep.

What is your morning routine? Do you wake up full of energy, ready to start the day? Or do you hit snooze a few times, roll over and check your email, facebook, etc, before eventually stumbling out of bed wishing you had more sleep? Today's guest is an incredible speaker and NYT best-selling author, Hal Elrod. At age 20, he was hit head on by a drunk driver at 70 mph, was dead for 6 minutes, and doctors told his parents that if Hal ever came out of his coma, he would have permanent brain damage and may never walk again. After 6 days of fighting for his life, what happened next was incredible. You have to listen to this guy's story. He's also the NYT bestselling author of the Miracle Morning. When you listen, you'll hear: Living with more energy - 5 Minute Rule: controlling your emotions [8:14] - Waking up better versus waking up early [20:43] - To take your life to the next level, you have to take your mornings to the next level [34:00] - How to engineer your life for maximum energy [38:00] Easy, every-day tips for vitality - The 6 Minute Miracle Morning [21:25] - Earning the right to check Facebook [22:00] - How you do anything is how you do everything [23:28] - Life SAVERS: Silence, Affirmations, Visualizations, Exercise, Reading, and Scribing [24:53] - The 5 Minute Journal [27:48] Finding purpose - Why every negative emotion that we feel is self-created [9:30] - How resisting what is out of our control creates emotional pain in our lives. [9:42] - The A-B-C's of living life's purpose [14:38] - Putting yourself in the best emotional and mental state to solve your own problems [18:39] - The “Can’t Change It” mentality and how it can help you [13:25] And loads more. Did I mention I’m still in Thailand? 😂 ☀️

I’ve been lucky enough to spent the winter living and working here in Asia with my family, and today's podcast was recorded on a clifftop overlooking a long sandy beach, with mountains in the background. It’s been interesting to me how a change of scene, working less and looking after myself more has had a big impact on generally just feeling healthy and well. For a 20-second flavour of what’s going on, check out this video of me and my friend Brett Moran going on a healthy adventure with ice baths and mopeds ❄️🏍

Brett is today's guest, author, yogi and online entrepreneur, and friend of Zestology, he's been on the podcast many times. Brett is holding a UK retreat later this month and I recommend it to you. He is so much fun and it’s his first trip back in five years. If you are interested in disconnecting from your fast-paced world and having a rejuvenating few days (yes he’s arranged ice baths there) it will be a good place to do that 🙏 Mention Zestology for 10%!

BiOptimizers — Four out of five Americans are magnesium deficient, and almost everyone is at suboptimal levels. That’s a big problem because magnesium is involved in more than 600 biochemical reactions in your body.

Now here’s what most people DON’T know: taking just any magnesium supplement won’t solve your problem because most supplements use the cheapest kinds that your body can’t use or absorb.

That’s why I exclusively recommend Magnesium Breakthrough. It’s the only full-spectrum magnesium supplement with seven unique forms of magnesium that your body can actually use and absorb.

When you get all seven critical forms of magnesium, pretty much every function in your body gets upgraded. From your brain to your sleep, pain, inflammation and less stress.

Just go to https://www.bioptimizers.com/zestology and use the code ZESTOLOGY10

Biohacking News by Zestology - This Too Shall Pass - Julia Samuel MBE #270
play

05/04/20 • 38 min

Julia Samuel is the psychotherapist you wish you had on call. A great description of today's guest, who's written a book that is extraordinarily well timed given everything we are going through. This Too Shall Pass is a book of stories on how we can adapt and thrive during our most difficult times. Like, right now. Julia Samuel, MBE, is a leading British psychotherapist. During the last thirty years, she has worked first for the NHS and then in private practice, and specialises in the area of grief and loss.

This podcast is brought to you by P3-OM, the amazing probiotic that you can try for free. As you know, everyone is facing challenges with the recent virus pandemic. From stress, financials, sickness and quarantines, there’s not a lot of people who haven’t been touched by it.

One of the highest risk factors is a weakened immune system and a lot of what affects that weakened system is determined by your gut health.

So that's why I asked my friends at BiOptimizers to help people during these hard times... They are giving away a free bottle of their patented probiotic P3-OM until the end of this month.

As you know, I’m a fan of P3-OM and I’ve talked about it multiple times on this show. There’s a good reason for that. It’s because P3-OM helps eliminate bad bacteria and pathogens and rapidly boosts your gut health—and therefore also boosts immunity...

Go to www.p3om.com/zestologyfree - you will automatically get access to your unique coupon code to claim your free bottle.

This is limited to one per household and this offer is only available at www.p3om.com/zestologyfree - This offer is not valid for UK customers at this time (they are working on it), but if you are in the UK you can head to www.bioptimizers.co.uk and use the code ZESTOLOGY for 10% off.

On today's podcast, find out what's in my freezer, and other more important lockdown issues. Yes, we are talking... drumroll, lockdown tactics, how to deal with coronavirus from a physical, mental and emotional perspective.

So how are you getting on with all this? I do hope you are keeping safe and well. On the subject of keeping well, Beth O’Hara is a Functional Naturopath and Functional Genetic Analyst and specialises in working with clients with Histamine Intolerance and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (and you probably know about my interest in histamine issues). She has a Doctorate in Naturopathy specialising in Functional Naturopathic Approaches and is the perfect person to talk to in these strange times.

We talk in general terms about immunity, breathing techniques, supplements and tips, and also a bit more in depth about allergies, histamine intolerance and mast cell activation syndrome too.

THIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: BiOptimizers, a company that have made it their mission to heal our guts. I’m getting in some industry-leading supplements at the moment. Yes, just call me the gut-health guinea pig, trying their stuff out and making my digestion like new. Want to join me?
