Biohacking News by Zestology - Matthew Walker on Sleep #231

I met one of the world's foremost sleep researchers and experts, Matthew Walker at his Airbnb in London when he was over recently. Ironically, his rented flat was opposite Tiger Tiger which closes at 4am. So the world’s top sleep guru hadn’t had a great night’s sleep.

It was the perfect chance for him to talk me through his own sleep schedule, as well as look at other important sleep issues including;

  • The best time to go to sleep
  • The optimum way to prepare in the final hour before bed
  • The perils of bad sleep (frankly terrifying)
  • How to deal with insomnia
  • Sleep tips for parents (I need these)
  • The importance of bright light exposure.
  • The truth about sunglasses (surprising - if you are a sunglasses wearer make sure you listen)
  • Getting the temperature right in your bedroom. (Clue - the older you get, the cooler it needs to be.)

I’m sure that after listening to this you’ll change more than one thing about your bedtime routine. And if you enjoy it, perhaps you’ll share it with someone else you know who could do with a better night’s sleep.

Boosting your brain and body is the theme of today's show, where I've plucked three of the best guests (different format alert) when they go big-time in depth. Their subjects could be dry, but they are so good and knowledgeable that they make it entertaining.

I love depth, and that's why I've called it the smartest ways to boost brain and body.

  • Dave Asprey on Stem Cells (brain and body)
  • Dr Pompa on Water (brain and body)
  • Todd White on Alcohol (brain and body)

Enjoy getting the old grey matter working hard.

Relationships, setting boundaries, and living with integrity

This week on Zestology I speak to an extraordinary author - Dr. Robert Glover. He's simply awesome on relationships, setting boundaries, and living with integrity.

I contacted him because I admire his work, and I'm pleased he came on the show. He's a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and wrote the cult classic No More Mr Nice Guy.

A couple of weeks ago I was in LA for the Bulletproof Biohacking Conference. You've probably seen various selfies on social media.

I went over there to write a piece for Balance magazine and record for Zestology on going Back To The Future, with the world's most famous biohacker Dave Asprey.

How does this guy do it? Dave sat across from me, and he looked healthier and younger – way younger – than the last time I saw him ten months ago. He’s more toned, his guns are bigger than mine – I’m especially unhappy about that - the lines on his face are smoother, and hang on, he appears to have youthful dimples in his cheeks. Like a 20-something. Where did the dimples come from? He definitely didn’t have them at the start of the year.

Ordinarily the first thing that would spring to mind is botox. But this is the man with a stated aim of living to the age of 180. And in his words, he’s not into sticking rat poison into his face.

There is no beating around the bush. I need to know. We’re starting with the dimples. First question – how do you look annoyingly younger than last time, while I seem to be ageing not-go-gracefully?

New Stuff Friday has been renamed! Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. It's now ZestHacks. If you are interested in stuff that will make you feel more energised, motivated and awesome - then you'll enjoy these gadgets/supplements/lifestyle hacks for more energy.

I've been recording one of my new Friday podcasts on Blue Blocking glasses. They're effective for helping you to produce melatonin at night, sleep better and so on. Problem is - some of the blue-blocking glasses around aren't exactly stylish. Wearing stupid glasses in the name of bringing you this information. I'm so good to you.

ps - check instagram.com/tonywrighton for just how hideous blue-blockers can be!
