Art of Spousing - Love: Defining the Three Essentials
play

09/12/22 • 16 min

When committed love, emotional intimacy, and passion collide, the result is a work of art called marriage.

"Love is more than a feeling and deeper than a crafty slogan or a line of a song."

Today we're talking about love. The word love is described in so many different ways. Some make sense. Some are just silly. Some talk about love. Some try to define love. Some of these you may have heard of well, and other others may be new to you. Love is blind. Love is in the air. All you need is love. Love is like war. Easy to begin and hard to end. Not sure about that one. Love means differences can be worked out. Love is reaching your dreams together. Our love is like dividing by zero. It can't be defined. That kind of feels more like a bad pickup line. Yeah, it does. While some of those could be true, it's really difficult to define love. What makes up love?

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How can love be defined? 2. What are the components of love? 3. What does love look like in a healthy marriage?

In this episode of the Art of Spousing podcast, hosts James Duvall and Lisa Duvall dive into the importance of grace and humility in marriage. They've learned a thing or two about this topic through their own experiences and want to share their insights with you. They discuss the power of viewing your spouse through a lens of value, celebrating their strengths instead of focusing on weaknesses. They also introduce the concept of pride and how it can hinder intimacy and cause conflict in a relationship. But don't worry, they've got the antidote: humility. They define humility as having an accurate estimate of your worth and thinking of yourself less, not thinking less of yourself. They provide practical applications of humility in marriage, like putting your spouse first and being quick to listen and slow to speak. By incorporating these principles, you can cultivate a healthier and more fulfilling relationship. So, if you're looking to improve communication and strengthen your marriage, this episode is definitely worth a listen!

Art of Spousing - Secrets of Sex and Marriage with Shaunti Feldhahn
play

04/03/23 • 32 min

In this episode James and Lisa have a conversation with Shaunti Feldhahn, co-author of the book "Secrets of Sex and Marriage." The episode tackles one of the most taboo topics in most relationships - Sex in marriage. Shaunti and her co-author, renowned sex therapist Michael Sytsma, spent three years and $120,000 on a research project involving interviewing over 5,300 people, leading to major surprises and aha moments. They identified the little things that make a big difference in making marriage sex work. The episode reveals how communication is crucial and how making people understand the differences in desire and addressing underlying issues can bring freedom and growth in a relationship. With the book designed to be read together, Shaunti believes that "Secrets of Sex and Marriage" can help couples understand each other better and feel validated.

"Communication is the elephant in the room - the topic we avoid because of its awkwardness. Despite having close friends, we rarely address it with them. It’s the only issue we never speak about, leading to the creation of myths and misunderstandings which guide our actions. If we don’t learn to communicate with our partners, these myths will keep us from true understanding."

Topics discussed:

How intimacy in marriage is the least talked-about topic

Research on the little things that make a big difference in making marriage intimacy work

Communication gaps and misunderstandings and how they impact intimacy

Understanding the differences in desire

Establishing signals or cues for willingness to engage in sexual activity

The church as a safe place for difficult conversations, and the creation of a curriculum on intimacy in marriage
