What do you do when some guy rides his bike into a San Francisco Walgreens and starts loading up stuff into a black garbage bag, then rides out? Now think of that on a large scale! That's what's happening in northern California right now, and that's why businesses, including Walgreens, are leaving in droves.
But California isn't the only place insanity is happening. Other major cities have prosecutors who refuse to prosecute smaller crimes and are also letting convicted felons back into the streets within hours of being arrested.
To NO ONE'S surprise, crime is spiking! Police are leaving in huge numbers and the citizens are suffering because of it. So what do we do? What CAN we do?

Is it possible for everyone, from the responding police officer to the judge and defense attorney, in the entire justice system to be corrupt? OR, is the case against an individual actually the truth?
How do law enforcement agencies avoid their cases falling into the trap of fake news? It can happen in an instant, especially with the insatiable demand for instant reports, explanations and answers to questions where there may not be any, the law enforcement Public Affairs Officer (PIO) and Public Affairs Director (for the larger agencies) is critical.
In today's now-now world the delicate balance between the public's right to know and the sensitive and often rapidly evolving details of an investigation are always at odds. Ensuring that balance doesn't fall over the cliff towards one side or the other is the job of the law enforcement agency's PIO or Public Affairs Officer. When the organization consists of multiple offices the executive often has one person to oversee all the PIOs and flow of information, and that is exactly what Nelly Miles does.
And what a job! As if keeping the narrative about a case, conflict or issue on the truth path isn't difficult enough when it's just one agency, imagine it when there is an entire state of agencies involved! Georgia has 800 law enforcement agencies, and Nelly Miles has to know at least a little about each one, a lot if the agency requires the help of the GBI, or Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
In this All Things Crime episode Nelly discusses her role as the PAD, and how difficult it can be when there are no rules for rampant opinions on social media, but her ability to counter any false information is very limited, especially in ongoing investigations. It's a difficult job, but fortunately amazing people like Nelly are willing to step up and do it!

Bill Cosby is a Free Man? How is That Possible?

Today is July 1st, 2021. Yesterday morning the Pennsylvania Supreme Court abruptly vacated Bill Cosby's guilty verdict and within hours he was walking out of prison.
Not only that, but the court ruled he cannot be retried!
Didn't Bill Cosby admit to raping those women? Wasn't he forced to pay out millions in restitution to his victims, spanning over decades and scores of women? If all that evidence was against him, how in the world is he a free man today?
*Update* As we've been reading the PA Supreme Court decision and learning more about this case, we've learned that Bill Cosby NEVER DID admit to rape, nor even sexually assaulting his victims. What he DID do is admit he drugged them and then they had sex later. Apparently the jury equated that to rape or at least sexual assault and that led to the guilty verdict. Crazy!
This is not only a twisted, sick and perverted case, but it's also a legal one that is likely to go down in history as beyond bizarre and an obvious miscarriage of justice for all of his victims.
BUT, as a video podcast that focuses on the process, we also have to explore the law, and cases like this actually show that the judicial system worked. Again, All Things Crime is NOT saying it's right morally, but based on everything we have read, it's legally the right decision.
