January 27th is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Why does the world (or at least all civilized countries) recognize this day? Because the horrors of the Holocaust - from physically separating people by religion and ideology to putting people in concentration camps to medical experiments on men, women and children to gassing and murdering millions of innocent people - are so extreme that we need a special day every year to remember it and make sure those horrors are never repeated.
So how do seemingly civilized men reach a point where they are willing to do the above? Basically treat another person as sub-human? We discuss it in this All Things Crime episode!

The Phoenix Canal Murders occurred in 1992-93. The murders took place in Phoenix, Arizona, and each of them involved a young woman that went for a bike ride in the early evening along the Arizona Canal, and neither one of them ever returned.
The victims names were Melanie Bernas and Angela Brosso.
While at a conference in Phoenix Dr Fitzpatrick met with some members of the Phoenix PD and explained to them what she could do to possibly help their case. They sent her the data, she ran it in her system and came out with the name Miller.
The killers name was Brian Patrick Miller.
Forensic genealogy is changing the way cases are solved, and many of them are years if not decades old. If the investigators can procure DNA material from the crime scene, then even if the suspect's DNA is not in the DNA database they can oftentimes use genealogy methods to develop a family tree and a name.
Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick has a PhD in nuclear physics. So how did she become one of the leading experts in the world in forensic genealogy? It's all about the numbers. Statistics. Getting rid of the data that is not relevant and identifying what is.
And when two of the most knowledgeable homicide detectives we know recommend we talk to her, we do it! After all, aren't both Lindsey Wade and Joe Kennedy awesome All Things Crime interviews? So of course they would know!
Tune in to this fascinating discussion with the founder of Identifinders International and learn about some of the amazing cases she has helped solve!
For more info on Dr Fitzpatrick, go to https://identifinders.com/

Episode 3 - Our justice system has become a conveyor line of cases moving through, many without trials and only plea deals, and as many as 10% of the people currently serving in prison may actually be innocent but faced a much longer sentence so took a deal.
The West Memphis 3 is a tragic case in so many ways it's almost difficult to describe, because there are actually two sets of three victims, and then the trauma associated with the victims families and the community continue to this day.
The murders happened in 1993 in West Memphis, Arkansas.
The first set of victims are three little 8 yr old boys who were murdered, stripped of their clothing, tied up with their own shoelaces and buried beneath the surface of a creek near their neighborhood. Their clothes were also forced under the surface with sticks and tree branches to hide the crime.
The second set of three were three teenage young men who were convicted of killing the boys, allegedly committing some form satanic ritual on them in killing them, and hiding their bodies. They served 18 years before they were released but to this day they have not been exonerated and are still considered murderers.
We discuss this case w investigator Bob Ruff for a number of reasons. He has a different perspective, he's done extensive research on the case, and he has done a full documentary on the case w Oxygen TV.
Bob is also working with the defense to get more evidence tested, possibly with the M-Vac system, in order to collect any possible DNA material from different pieces of evidence.

Several years ago the host, Jared, had the opportunity to visit Hanoi, Vietnam. While there he and a few others from his business group visited the "Hanoi Hilton" POW Camp.
From the moment you step inside that place, a feeling of dread, darkness and evil descends on you like nothing else that is unimaginable. The primary thought is "I just want to get out of here", but morbid curiosity keeps you on the tour. How people can treat another human being in that way is also hard to imagine, but it's happened throughout our history, and if we're not careful we will do it again.
The saying "Those who fail to learn from history are destined to repeat it" is as true today as it was back then.

How critical is on-the-job experience? What happens to a department or agency when officers are promoted too fast, or given responsibilities with no one to train them and "show them the ropes"? Mistakes happen. And not surprisingly, especially in the context of law enforcement, the consequences can be dire. That is why movements like the "defund the police" movement are so dangerous!
Why do so many people lose their minds and act so irrationally when something changes, even if it's relatively minor? Two years ago someone started the rumor that toilet paper might become scarce. Remember that? LOTS of people lost their minds!! Every Christmas season, especially on "Black Friday", we hear of people getting into fistfights over a TV or a cabbage patch doll. And the list goes on and on.
Lincoln, Rhode Island is a smaller community of about 23,000 residents. But being in the East, and not far from Providence, Boston and other large cities it has it's share of spillover.
Plus it has one of the largest casinos in the area so there is plenty of people who are just "passing through"!
Detective Sean Gorman is a 19 year veteran of the police force, has experience investigating crime from burglary to murder, is certified in crime scene investigation and is also well versed in DNA, fingerprinting and even prosecutions. He even finds time to be an adjunct professor!
Why does he do all of that? Because he lives and serves in a small community, and that's just what they do. When you have limited resources, limited personnel and yet have to deal with "big city crime", you put on whatever hat you need at the moment and just get it done.
Frankly, law enforcement officers like Detective Gorman are not that different than small business owners in anywhere America, they just get it done!

Episode 4 - Where do we go from here?
Forensic DNA testing has advanced to the point that DNA analysts only need a few cells to produce a profile. Some say 10-12 cells. Could that many viable cells of the killer still be on the shoelaces that were used to tie up the boys? Could that many cells still be on the sticks that were used to shove the boy's clothing into the mud? It's certainly possible and worth a shot.
Why not pursue the truth to the end, wherever that may be? Of all those involved with this case, no one has more to lose than Damien. He sat on death row for almost 18 years, yet he is the one who wants this DNA testing to happen. If his DNA is found, he'll lose all of his support. Will it clear his name? Maybe. But isn't that worth a couple of thousand dollars to know for certain? Many believe it is.
Best case? The killers DNA is collected and justice for Steve Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers is finally found.
Our justice system has become a conveyor line of cases moving through, many without trials and only plea deals, and as many as 10% of the people currently serving in prison may actually be innocent but faced a much longer sentence so took a deal. Don't have the financial resources to hire a decent lawyer? You may very well end up in that situation.
