January 27th is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Why does the world (or at least all civilized countries) recognize this day? Because the horrors of the Holocaust - from physically separating people by religion and ideology to putting people in concentration camps to medical experiments on men, women and children to gassing and murdering millions of innocent people - are so extreme that we need a special day every year to remember it and make sure those horrors are never repeated.
So how do seemingly civilized men reach a point where they are willing to do the above? Basically treat another person as sub-human? We discuss it in this All Things Crime episode!

All Things Crime - The Phoenix Canal Murders w Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick Pt 2
play

04/23/22 β€’ 21 min

The Phoenix Canal Murders occurred in 1992-93. The murders took place in Phoenix, Arizona, and each of them involved a young woman that went for a bike ride in the early evening along the Arizona Canal, and neither one of them ever returned.
The victims names were Melanie Bernas and Angela Brosso.
While at a conference in Phoenix Dr Fitzpatrick met with some members of the Phoenix PD and explained to them what she could do to possibly help their case. They sent her the data, she ran it in her system and came out with the name Miller.
The killers name was Brian Patrick Miller.
Forensic genealogy is changing the way cases are solved, and many of them are years if not decades old. If the investigators can procure DNA material from the crime scene, then even if the suspect's DNA is not in the DNA database they can oftentimes use genealogy methods to develop a family tree and a name.
Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick has a PhD in nuclear physics. So how did she become one of the leading experts in the world in forensic genealogy? It's all about the numbers. Statistics. Getting rid of the data that is not relevant and identifying what is.
And when two of the most knowledgeable homicide detectives we know recommend we talk to her, we do it! After all, aren't both Lindsey Wade and Joe Kennedy awesome All Things Crime interviews? So of course they would know!
Tune in to this fascinating discussion with the founder of Identifinders International and learn about some of the amazing cases she has helped solve!
For more info on Dr Fitzpatrick, go to https://identifinders.com/

Imagine you’re a parent of a 16-year-old, fiercely independent, living on her own for the first time. You get a call from her employer saying she missed her shiftβ€”a rare occurrence. You check on her, only to make a horrifying discovery: your daughter, blindfolded and gagged, lies deceased in her own bathtub. Now, imagine spending 39 years searching for the truth about who did this to her. In part 2 of this episode, I'm joined by Detective Hilary Gordon, who has spent years pursuing justice for Sharon "Lecia” Shollmeyer, tragically murdered in her Salt Lake City apartment in 1977.
With few leads and minimal forensic technology back then, this case became an enduring mystery. In our conversation, Detective Gordon shares the challenges of working on cold cases, the emotional toll on families, and the recent breakthroughs that finally provided answers in this case.

All Things Crime - The Beast and The Buffet Part 2
play

10/23/21 β€’ 20 min

What is the Beast? It's more than just a big, scary creature. In this case it's the monster that consumes and destroys society through both direct and indirect actions.
Examples? How about allowing the Taliban to completely envelop Afghanistan in record time and leaving American citizens and $85 BILLION in US military equipment behind? Yeah, that's unleashing the beast and giving it an amazing boost. Nice work. Lots more examples in the episode!
What's the Buffet? That's all of us. Whether we are an appetizer, main course or a desert, we all have a place somewhere along the Beast's feeding trough, the only question is where?
Perfect example is what's going on in Portland, Oregon. The genius mayor there believed his appeasement would win him the hearts and minds of the AntiFa anarchists, but all it did was put him further back on the buffet. Then he made the mistake of believing his own propaganda and went down to mingle with his newfound friends, and they turned on him! Gee, what a surprise. Anarchists don't like any form of government Mr. Mayor, not even liberal socialists. Can't say we didn't warn you!
The Beast and The Buffet (2 parts) is the final segments of the All Things Crime mini-series Evil, The Beast and the Buffet. Please comment below as to how much you agree or disagree with the series!

There are two aspects to crime that every law enforcement officer must meet up with and face head on - and that is the sewer and the abyss - as Dr Lee Mellor explains. The sewer they are more than accustomed to as they are forced to deal with it as a part of their job. It's the abyss that causes the issues and for many even PTSD.
The sewer is the disgusting parts of crime and the dregs of society. The urine, blood, guts, decaying bodies, murder and rape crime scenes, the outward part of crime.
The abyss is the why. WHY would someone stab another human being 60 times? WHY would someone steal the last dollars of an elderly persons social security check? That's actually the more disturbing part of dealing with criminals, because sometimes there is no why. That's just who they are, and for most of us that's VERY hard to deal with.
Dr Lee Mellor is an expert in the Why. He delves into the sadistical reasoning behind serial killings, rapes and other abnormal crime. And it's a sick and twisted world that he is tasked to make some sense out of, and more importantly, catch a perpetrator who is committing serial crimes and is still on the loose.
You can find more of Dr Mellor's books and writings on his website:

All Things Crime - The Invaluable Role of the PIO - Nelly Miles Part 3
play

07/10/21 β€’ 23 min

How do you keep your law enforcement agency out of a public affairs mess? By being active! Silence is NOT your friend, especially in today's now-now-now society. Crap WILL happen, including officer involved shootings and other imperfect scenarios no matter how many times we send our officers to sensitivity training. The fact is, the public, and especially criminals, don't play by those rules so "what looks awful but's still lawful" things will always happen.
Our job as citizens is to not jump to conclusions based on out-of-context home videos and social media narratives. But it's also the PIOs job to get the truth out as fast as possible and not jeopardize the case.
How do law enforcement agencies avoid their cases falling into the trap of fake news? It can happen in an instant, especially with the insatiable demand for instant reports, explanations and answers to questions where there may not be any, the law enforcement Public Affairs Officer (PIO) and Public Affairs Director (for the larger agencies) is critical.
In today's now-now world the delicate balance between the public's right to know and the sensitive and often rapidly evolving details of an investigation are always at odds. Ensuring that balance doesn't fall over the cliff towards one side or the other is the job of the law enforcement agency's PIO or Public Affairs Officer. When the organization consists of multiple offices the executive often has one person to oversee all the PIOs and flow of information, and that is exactly what Nelly Miles does.
And what a job! As if keeping the narrative about a case, conflict or issue on the truth path isn't difficult enough when it's just one agency, imagine it when there is an entire state of agencies involved! Georgia has 800 law enforcement agencies, and Nelly Miles has to know at least a little about each one, a lot if the agency requires the help of the GBI, or Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
In this All Things Crime episode Nelly discusses her role as the PAD, and how difficult it can be when there are no rules for rampant opinions on social media, but her ability to counter any false information is very limited, especially in ongoing investigations. It's a difficult job, but fortunately amazing people like Nelly are willing to step up and do it!

All Things Crime - How Long Can Society Survive Under the Current Conditions?

What do you do when some guy rides his bike into a San Francisco Walgreens and starts loading up stuff into a black garbage bag, then rides out? Now think of that on a large scale! That's what's happening in northern California right now, and that's why businesses, including Walgreens, are leaving in droves.
But California isn't the only place insanity is happening. Other major cities have prosecutors who refuse to prosecute smaller crimes and are also letting convicted felons back into the streets within hours of being arrested.
To NO ONE'S surprise, crime is spiking! Police are leaving in huge numbers and the citizens are suffering because of it. So what do we do? What CAN we do?
