All About Fitness

Are you getting close to the 'BIG 4-Oh'? Are you already in your 40s (or a little beyond)? Do you find it a challenge to balance all of the things that you have to do, like work and family, with the things that you want to do, like exercise? Introducing a brand-new feature of the All About Fitness podcast: Fitness Over 40 with Aimee Nicotera

Aimee is a personal trainer, group fitness instructor and fitness educator (she teaches other trainers and instructors how to make people sweaty); she has been on the podcast 2 times to talk about how to stay fit while pregnant and to share how she overcame breast cancer. Recently we started having these conversations on Facebook Live and they are perfect for this show, so the audio portions are going to become an ongoing part of the programming; twice a month Aimee and I will address a specific issue about managing life in our 40s while making health and fitness a priority.

On this episode, Aimee and I talk about how to encourage your kids to be active; Aimee has a young son and I have 2 daughters in elementary school. Issues covered in this episode include: which is better for young kids - sports or activities? How to help your kids develop physical literacy, how to model healthy behavior for your kids and what that means. This is a fun and engaging conversation that will help you identify ways that your entire family can be more active.

Jay Glazer - How to be Unbreakable

Physical health can be relatively easy to address because issues like cuts, sprains or broken bones are easy to identify in order to start the healing process. Mental health, however, is a different story and because emotional trauma does not express itself the same way as physical trauma it can be a challenge to address in a timely manner.

Professional athletes and members of the military are often young, fit, healthy and possess an extreme drive to succeed at the highest levels of human performance which means it can be a challenge to admit vulnerability, let alone discuss when life might become emotionally overwhelming. Both retired combat veterans and retired professional athletes deal with similar issues - how to stay focused and continue to move forward when your mission in life changes drastically and there is a real risk of suicide among both populations. Jay Glazer is a professional reporter who covers the NFL for Fox; he is also a retired martial arts competitor who started the Unbreakable studio to help high performing individuals to train for success. Jay also started Merging Vets and Players (MVP), a program that holds conditioning workouts that double as support groups for both retired soldiers and athletes so these individuals can support one another in an effort to achieve optimal mental as well as physical health.

On this episode of All About Fitness, Jay talks about his experience in martial arts, how he leveraged that to start Unbreakable and discusses the impact that the MVP Program is having on helping veterans and retired athletes address their mental health.

Watch Lane Johnson from the Philadelphia Eagles discuss how he has learned how to care for his mental health (This is not the interview with Jay Glazer - that was NOT licensed for YouTube, this segment is)

Exercise is physical stress imposed upon the body; when you do it the right way, you can get the results that you want, however, exercise done the wrong way could result in an injury that keeps you from your goals. Muscles generate force. Fascia and elastic connective tissue transmits that force through the body; it's often these tissues that become injured which can keep you from being able to workout. This Quick Fit Tip identifies what you should know about your fascia so you can avoid injury.
