More fabulous inventive, creative, extraordinary new music in this week's show.
In our LUVVA COVER feature, we played a 'hard rocking' version of one of Björk's best known songs. It's by Chuck Wright - bass player with Quiet Riot. He has assembled a stellar band including the magnificent vocalist Whitney Tai who is the singer on another of tonight's tracks which could not be more different , in mood, to this one!

Our ALBUM OF THE WEEK, this week, is 'Half Mirror' by Chorusing.

Lots more innovative, melodic, fascinating new music in this week's show!
Our ALBUM OF THE WEEK is the amazing debut album of Gal Musette. She is a musical prodigy who began writing piano based lyrical compositions and performing at open mics in her home city of San Clemente, CA at the age of 10. 'Backwards Lullaby' explores the pangs of hopeless romances and unrequited love, what it’s like to move beyond idealized love into the acceptance of what is real and constant, as well as the cyclical nature of life and love in relationships.
"baroque pop songs inspired by lost love, yearning & hopelessness"
"breathtakingly beautiful layered vocals ... heartfelt & vibrant mix of indie pop & folk laced confessions"

In our LUVVA COVER feature, we will be playing a cover of a gorgeous song by Big Thief. The cover is by 'bedroom pop sensation' Cavetown.
"The tenderness in the cover is on display from the jump. The vocals are doubled to give a bit of an Elliott Smith feel here as things roll out with a beautiful tone. The song takes on a bit of a new life without steering from the original. The guitar and vocals together drive home the softness in the cover. There's a harmonic note deliver on the song that takes hold as the vocals are the driving factor. It's a simple cover but it works with earnest and sincere intentions." closedcap

We are also incredibly proud to be raising awareness of the #v4velindre fundraising project in aid of the NHS Velindre Cancer Centre. The great Kevin McGrath has compiled a brilliant album of 50 songs by artists from the UK, Italy, USA and elsewhere and all proceeds will be donated to a great cause. We will be playing Apathy by Little Rêd - please visit https://v4velindre.bandcamp.com/album/v4velindre and show your support by downloading the album which is stacked full of great music!

A festival of new music again this week. With, perhaps, a bit of an electronic / nu jazz feel about it.
This week, our ALBUM OF THE WEEK is 'somewhere' by Sun June. Sun June is an American indie pop band from Austin, Texas.
"Somewhere showcases a gentle maturation of Sun June's sound, a second record full of quiet revelation, eleven songs that bristle with love and longing. It finds a band at the height of their collective potency, able to transport the listener into a fascinating new landscape, one that lies somewhere between the town and the city, between the head and the heart, neither here nor there, but certainly somewhere."

In our LUVVA COVER feature, we will be playing a cover of a Beatles standard by a bedroom pop duo, Memoryhouse. They are from Toronto and have released an EP of Beatles covers called 'Mania'.
"Mania is a lush and bold exploration of The Beatles that reflects the chaos and longing of the year - and our desperate need to cling to whatever joy we can find. It has that trademark Memoryhouse feeling of melancholy, taking that familiar Beatles classic and giving it a whole new spin, and meaning along the way."

The After Eight Show is almost exclusively NEW music and is an eclectic mix of original, intelligent, melodic, grown-up songs - alt. indie, dreampop, rnb, electronic, blues/Americana, jazz, world and folk-inspired acoustic music. And mostly from artists who you have not heard of - yet! Think 'next series of Jools' - that's the kind of artists that we play.
Our Album of the Week was '' by Newburgh (New York) band Cold Heaven. They're a rock band formed in the late 2000's and they write and record original songs with punk roots that incorporate lush, expressive synths and haunting melodies. This is their second full length album - they've recorded an introduction for us and we'll be playing three tracks from the album during the course of the show.

Our Luvva Cover feature, this week, has two giants of the music scene over the last 30 years or more. In 1986, Paul Simon travelled to South Africa, collaborated with local musicians there, and recorded his seminal album Graceland. In 2010, Peter Gabriel launched a project called You Scratch My Back where he recorded cover versions of songs by well known artists and, in return, they covered one of his. Peter Gabriel did a magnificent cover of The Boy In The Bubble and, in return, Paul Simon recorded Gabriel's song Biko.

This week's Luvva Cover is a moving tribute to the tragic figure of Karen Dalton, 50 years after the release of her final album, by Ríoghnach Connolly and The Breath. Karen Dalton wrote poems and lyrics but never had the chance to record one of her own songs - only songs by other song writers. The Breath have taken one of her beautiful lyrics and set it to music - it's stunning!

This week's Luvva Cover is fascinating. A hit single by Lesley Gore in 1963 became an anthem for the second feminist wave. The black, gay artist serpentwithfeet has made a brilliant cover version, melded it with one of his own songs, and placed it full square in a modern context.

Our Luvva Cover, this week, was VERY unusual! In 1970, Adriano Celentano - a successful Italian singer - wrote and recorded a song in gibberish. It almost sounded like it was in English but there is just one word in the whole lyric that makes sense. The incomparable Marianne Dissard has brought the song up to date by - well - we don't want to spoil it so you'll have to listen to the show to find out what she's done. Let's just say that Marianne is known not only for being an amazing singer but also for being eccentric - she once travelled the French Pyrenees on foot - accompanied by a donkey.

This is the final *weekly* episode of The After Eight Show thougfh we are doing three 'Best Of''s in the coming weeks.
Lots of beautiful new music that we've been saving up over the past 12 months. It really is a fabulous selection this week!
In our LUVVA COVER feature, we played a stripped back version of one of Tori Amos's most amazing songs. Jo Beth Young was asked to contribute a cover version to a tribute album which will be released in 2022. It truly is stunning and is a VERY appropriate way in which to close this feature in which we have played some really interesting takes on some fabulous songs.
