A Sober Story Podcast - What If Anxiety & Motherhood Led You to Drink? Emily's Story
play

04/06/22 • 21 min

Emily splits her drinking history into two different realms: college party drinking, and anxious stressed-out working mom drinking. These two chapters of Emily's drinking differ greatly, however, they do have one thing in common: both chapters of Emily's drinking added zero value to her life. In fact, really shitty things happened when she drank. After another slip up of accidentally drinking to excess and making an ass out of herself, Emily woke up to her young daughter crying. Her little girl was worried, confused, and shaken by the belligerent woman she had seen the night before that she couldn't believe was her mom. Looking at the pain in her daughter's eyes, Emily knew she needed to make a change. Listen now to Emily's story and how she stopped drinking and became the best mom and person she could be.

A Sober Story Podcast - What If You Used Alcohol to Deal with Divorce? Megan's Story
play

04/14/22 • 26 min

Megan had been using wine to cope with the stresses of life as a mom of two young kids but when her marriage began to unravel leading to divorce, her drinking got out of hand. One holiday weekend at home, without her kids and no family nearby, Megan once again drank a bottle of wine and passed out. When she awoke at 3 am with night sweats, raging anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, she literally called out for a sign, a message, help, support of any kind to help get her out of this toxic cycle she had created. She got up, opened her email, and discovered she had won a scholarship to participate in an online support group program and she had until the following day to register. With nothing else to lose, Megan jumped on board and has never looked back. After finishing the100 day program, Megan decided to create her OWN sober support group meetings. Megan is now a certified health coach, runs three women's sobriety circles each week, and manages a wildly successful sober Instagram account (@sobahsistahs) Listen to her story now!

Chuck describes himself as the poster boy of high functioning alcoholism. He used drugs and alcohol to get himself through his day to day routine. It wasn't until Chuck was faced with the prospect of a stint in jail after failing his interlock breathalyzer for the second time that he recognized he wasn't going to be able to cheat his way through the system. Chuck now fills a leadership role within a local AA meeting where he mentors individuals mandated to attend meetings. Chuck enjoys a glass of wine here and there with his wife. He has been clean from drugs for 12 years. Way to go, Chuck! Listen to his story now!

A Sober Story Podcast - What If Your Mom Encouraged You to Drink? Rachel R's Story
play

06/14/22 • 41 min

Do you have a parent that struggles with addiction? Rachel, this week's guest, knows exactly what that is like. Rachel grew up in an impoverished community where drugs, alcohol, and teenage pregnancy ran rampant. Even though recognized that drinking was problematic, she got swept up in addictive and self-deprecating behavior after a breakup with a serious boyfriend. After years of binge drinking, her hangover symptoms were becoming more and more severe. Rachel had finally had enough. One day, while nursing yet another horrible hangover, she asked God for help. Rachel knew that when she asked for help from the universe, she was moving in the right direction. She went on to purchase quit lit and healing crystals to help her on her journey to sobriety. She also began the heavy work of exploring the trauma from her childhood. Eventually, Rachel realized that she wanted to help other women going through the same struggles she had gone through. She became a coach through A Sober Girl's Guide and holds weekly support circles where she listens to and validates the experiences of others. Listen to Rachel's heart-wrenching but beautiful story today.

A Sober Story Podcast - What If Your Drinking Killed Two People? Martin's Story
play

07/26/22 • 50 min

Even though Martin grew up with loving and involved parents, he couldn't escape the fact that he lived in a drug and crime-infested neighborhood, while his White peers enjoyed life in cleaner, safer neighborhoods. This stark discrepancy resulted in Martin internalizing feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. These dark emotions led him to make poor decisions like stealing cars and robbing stores. After a two-year stint in prison, Martin re-entered society and began working, and did a good job of reporting to his parole officer. Unfortunately, this taste of success led him to believe he could manage to bring alcohol back into his life. This decision proved disastrous. On New Year's Eve of 2003, Martin's life was changed forever, when he ran a red light while intoxicated, resulting in the deaths of two people. While incarcerated, Martin learned the individuals he had killed were beloved members of the recovery community. Upon learning this news, Martin made the decision to dedicate the rest of his life to helping others in recovery. Martin has made good on his promise and speaks at drunk driving panels around the country and is a drug and alcohol counselor. His story is deeply moving and inspirational. Listen today!

Felicia grew up around her Sicilian and Irish family consuming alcohol during each and every holiday. When she hit high school, Felicia looked around and realized that she was going to participate in the family drinking tradition, too. She began to party hard with friends, making reckless choices and putting herself in dangerous situations. After several years of unhealthy drinking habits, Felicia became pregnant with her daughter. Like so many women, Felicia suffered from postpartum depression after her child was born. She describes the anxiety and depression she experienced as pure hell. Finally, Felicia sought help from her doctor who prescribed her medication, but also told her, no more alcohol. After 60 days without booze, people began to see a shift in Felicia's overall demeanor. She was calm, less reactive. Through a romantic partner, she discovered the AA community which Felicia credits with saving her life. Felicia is now asked to speak at functions where individuals are just starting their sober journey. She runs her own meetings to support others and manages the Instagram account @SobernScottsdale, which is a part of the Sober City Movement. Listen to Felicia's story now!

When the people in Todd's life started suggesting he may benefit from AA , Todd calmly explained to them, "I am depressed and crazy, but not an addict." But, funny thing, Todd was constantly drunk and high. After his second mental breakdown and spending time in his local psych hospital, he finally made the decision to enter detox at the behest of a trusted doctor. Unfortunately, Todd ran away from the center and walked to his brother's home the night he arrived at detox. When he returned to his own house, he rationally (ha!) explained to his wife that he could stop drinking on his own, no problem, however, he NEEDED weed in order to function. His wife said sure, you can keep the weed habit up, BUT you're not living here. With nowhere to go except his parents' home, Todd was finally ready to dedicate to detox. He eventually entered a treatment center where he worked to get to the bottom of his addictive behavior. At five years sober, Todd openly admits he still grapples with anxiety, however, life is much more beautiful and calm as a sober person. Make sure to check out Todd's moving children's book Sometimes Daddy Cries and listen to his story today!
