Episode 6- The mini-series "The Art of Something" comes to a finish with my good friend Jp Martinez.

It's hard to put into words what this guy means to me. I first met Jp on a phone call near the end of 2020. I was anticipating a role with the San Francisco Giants; he was the assistant pitching coach then. I believe he thought we were having a short introduction, whereas I was under the impression we were having an interview.

Needless to say, he asked me about a specific certification I had on my resume. I had no idea what the certification was, and my heart started to beat so quickly that I figured I just needed to tell him the truth. I told him to disregard it and told him I didn't know what it was (I did pass the test for the certification, just so you know). He genuinely laughed, and it was at that moment that I knew I would love the guy. Over the next four years, he would become my big brother and a man I grew deep reverence for.

We spent every day of spring training meditating during sunrise from 2021 to 2024. In those moments, I got to experience this man's depth and wisdom. He is calm yet tenacious. Patient but competitive. His ability to listen is second to none, but what stands about above all within his leadership is that he cares. He has since become the head pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants and will lead their staff during the 2025 campaign. A forever student, sit back and enjoy my conversation with Mr. Miyagi of coaching, Mr. Jp Martinez.

Welcome back to another episode. This week's guest is Xavier Scruggs. Mr. Scruggs is a former Major League Baseball Player who turned his career into broadcasting and media content. His story is inspiring, as you learn to admire his connection to intuition. He is curious, open-minded, and well-articulated. Xavier peels into his path after sports and how he narrowed down his training to become a fluent speaker. His presence is engaging, and for these reasons, it's obvious he found early success following his playing days. Throughout the conversation, we dive into various topics around performing, exploration, and finding authenticity. Xavier has inspired me not only because of his achievements but also because of his faith, obedience, and values as a father. He maintains such clarity as he navigates the world, and I feel that this will be emphasized throughout the show. Enjoy getting to know this man, especially if you're into baseball. There is a high likelihood you will hear his voice regularly around the stadiums of America this summer.

Brian Mackenzie is an expert in the development and application of custom protocols to optimize human health and performance. His work harnesses and integrates respiratory, movement, strength and endurance-based training approaches to elicit unprecedented positive results. His protocols have been used to accelerate and raise both mental and physical performance in world-class Olympic and professional athletes, top executives, and elite military operators, as well as to improve the health for people suffering from various chronic illnesses. Everyday people have also used Brian’s tools to reduce pathologic stress and to vastly heighten their mental and physical well being and performance.

A highly unique feature of Brian’s approach is that he voluntarily and repeatedly subjects his protocols to rigorous 3rd party scientific testing, re-testing and improvement, at top institutions including Stanford University School of Medicine, Florida A&M University and The Center for Sports Performance. Few, if any, experts directly seek to apply unbiased laboratory and field testing to their craft as Mackenzie does.

Brian is himself a highly accomplished athlete. He completed the Ironman (Canada, 2004), completed both The Western States 100 mile and The Angeles Crest 100 mile runs using adapted training protocols he developed to prevent injury and fatigue. Also a prolific writer, Brian co-authored the book Power Speed Endurance, The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner, and UnPlugged, which assesses the integration of emergent technology and human performance. His programs have been featured in Outside Magazine, Men’s Health, Runners World, Triathlete Magazine, Men’s Journal, ESPN Rise, as well as periodicals such as The Economist. Brian and his protocols have been featured in 4 of Timothy Ferriss’ New York Times bestselling books including: “The 4-Hour Body” and “Tools of Titans”.

Brian MacKenzie’s programs have been taught at more than 400 seminars worldwide and are used by thousands of athletes ranging from beginners to elite medalists and record holders via his “Power, Speed, Endurance” platform and by private consultation.

Currently, Brian is the Co-Founder and Director of Optimize State LLC, a technology-based company that specializes in the delivery of science-based protocols to optimize physical, emotional and cognitive performance and health.

A Moment with Mart - #141 - Lara Dallman-Weiss: US Olympic Sailor
play

10/29/21 • 96 min

On this episode, we were joined by US Olympic Sailor, Lara Dallman-Weiss. This podcast is packed with awareness found through growth, success, and struggle. In our conversation, Harvey and Brian get to learn all about the art of sailing, the bond of the Olympic family, and how Lara keeps her body and mind sharp to compete against the best in the world. We also got to hear about the mental challenges that she and many Olympians face before and after competing for their country. One thing that sticks out is Lara's ability to dream. A common thread amongst many great achievers is the way they conceptualize achievement. Lara knew as a young girl that she wanted to be an Olympian, and she didn't care what sport or how she got there. The end goal was clear, but the route didn't have to be concrete or conventional. Hear more about this and much more depth about the internal mental warfare of being an Olympian in our conversation!

ABOUT LARA DALLMAN-WEISS

Lara is a 32-year-old Olympian from Shoreview, Minnesota. Lara's most notably known for participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as a part of Team USA's sailing team. She placed 12th in the Women's 470 event. She has also finished 7th at the World Championships. As of right now, she is a part of the US Sailing Team, Perfect Vision Sailing, New York Yacht Club, and White Bear Yacht Club. Lara has dedicated much of her life to sailing, starting at age 6. Outside of sailing, she graduated from Eckerd College in 2011 with a degree in Nutritional Counseling Wellness Education and Spanish. Her hobbies include writing, running, biking, travel, and photography. Fun Fact: Lara has raced on boats ranging from 8 feet long all the way to 183 feet long. She now resides in Miami, FL and is just like all of us - navigating the idea of what's next in providing our unique purpose to the world (along with chasing an Olympic Gold Medal in Paris).

Episode 4 - The Art of Something Mini-Series with the deep-thinking, curious brother of mine, Mr. Jake Butt. (@jakebutt)

I first got in touch with Jake while he was playing with the Denver Broncos. What was supposed to be a quick phone call turned into a deep-dive conversation about life, the universe, and the reasoning behind our existence. I remember the moment distinctly. As I hung up the phone, I felt invigorated. From that day on, our friendship has only grown as we have shared some of the most profound and fulfilling conversations I’ve experienced on my journey with him.

Jake has a funny way of enthralling the environment around him to feel inspired towards the potential of what they can be, what we all can be. I have been fortunate to experience this with Jake, as I’m sure you will feel similar during the conversation. After Jake’s playing days, I couldn’t help but admire his confidence in grabbing the reins and expanding into new avenues of thought and professionalism. He has since dove headfirst into the world of broadcasting and brought a level of intention that has profoundly impacted the game of football.

All athletes will someday transition out of their sport. It is not specific to Jake, but he showcased courage in changing with the times. His ability to identify with both attachment and detachment is admirable for us all.
