From creating a business to starting a not-for-profit, from coaching sports to being a mentor for children, Behind the Tin examines all the different things our heroes do when they are “off duty”.
About Your Hosts:
Stephen J, "the Good Lieutenant" is a man that has been in emergency services since 16 years old when he started to “play fireman” at his local fire department. He served in several leadership roles and that was the first place he was called “The Good Lieutenant”.
Stephen J. became a Deputy Sheriff in one of New York State’s largest counties in 2000 and currently holds the rank of, you guessed it, Lieutenant.
Stephen J is a leader in and out of law enforcement, serving on various community boards and organizations, many of which you will hear about on Behind the Tin.
Justin "the Civilian Producer" comes from the business world.
Justin, utilizing his experience and marketing education started his own podcast, Marketing and Service with Justin Varuzzo.
Justin has always admired the men and women who put his safety above their own. He first met Stephen J while they both were involved in a community group and their friendship grew. After meeting many more first responders and getting to know them, he became very intrigued by the “hidden lives”, the things they did when they weren’t in their uniforms working.
Through Justin's intrigue and podcast knowledge and Stephen J’s experience and network, BEHIND THE TIN was born!

We were asked “what exactly is the point of this show?”Answer: social media is an underutilized tool by police. Not just police, but firefighters, DA’s, nurses, military, ambulance, teachers; front liners. This show is designed to reveal the full potential of true communication through long discussion format. This will give a voice to these professions that often go unheard from those that do it. Furthermore, it’s designed to show authentic and genuine response; rather than the tiresome “look, cops petting puppies” approach. We are avoiding the sound bite narrative so the first responders and those associated can give fully articulated thought. The idea is the viewers both inside and outside these career fields can gain realistic and genuine perspective to make informed opinions on the content. Overall folks, we want to earn your respect, help create the change you want and need together through all channels of the criminal justice system and those that directly impact it. This comes from the heart with nothing but positive intentions. That is what this show is about. Welcome to the Regular Man Podcast, where we celebrate God's gift of masculinity in the life of the Regular Man. Here, there are no pastors, no pretense, and no pandering. Just interesting conversation, realistic expectations, and practical advice for the regular man.
Steve Cruz is the host of The Regular Man Podcast, created specifically for the regular, hard-working, blue-collar man. He’s a husband and father who believes men should embrace God’s gift of masculinity and live a life of Christian virtue.
Steve learned the value of hard work, integrity, and respect through an upbringing of cars, construction, and a cadre of strong hardened men. As a military veteran and law enforcement officer, Steve understands the value of speaking directly and plainly on subject matters that are, far too often, nuanced to death by the modern-day Christian Church.
As the host of The Regular Man Podcast, Steve has down-to-earth conversations with interesting guests to discuss everything from family and faith, to fitness and fighting. Complex theological terms are often discussed at a ground-level understanding for those of us who do not have a doctorate in theology, and the listener gains practical ways they can apply Scripture to their life without having to listen to a pretentious pastors or sit through a watered-down big eva, low-T sermon.
