05/06/23 • 47 min
Annie Hughes (she/her) is an athlete, a baker, a teammate, a professional ultrarunner and a Sharman Ultra Coach. She grew up running cross country and track in Wisconsin and went on to run for Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado for two years before discovering her love for exploring in the Colorado mountains and trail running. Annie is sponsored by Hoka, and in 2021, she became the youngest woman to ever win the Leadville Trail 100. She also won the Moab 240 in 2022 placing 3rd overall, and she broke the course record by 14 hours at the Cocodona 250. She then went on to place 1st female, 2nd overall, set a new course record, and became the first woman to finish the High Lonesome 100 in under 24 hours. Annie lives and trains in Leadville, Colorado. She leans in to digging deep, working hard, and putting in long and high efforts. She is strong and gritty, curious and kind and is willing to engage with others whether it’s receiving or giving advice or support. Annie hopes to inspire others to test their own limits in whatever medium they are most passionate about and to also realize that they are capable of accomplishing the seemingly impossible.
Annie talks about paying to attention to how she is feeling and planning her running around how she feels. We talk about rest days, knowing your body and what your body needs. Annie speaks about how she likes more unstructured, intuitive training and having more control over her movement. We talk about Annie's mentor, Olga, who offers up wisdom and support partnered with self-trust. Annie went from burnout to long days running in the mountains, connecting to the natural world around her. Advice from Annie for young runners is to not take running too seriously. She says to enjoy their time and have fun with it.

29. BONUS EPISODE: Katie Belk (MY SISTER): Growth Mindset, Necessity of Self-Care, Benefits of Therapy, Perspective that Creates Grace
Katie Belk (she/her) is a mom, a runner, a friend, a teammate, a storyteller and my sister! She has been an Occupational Therapist for the past 15 years, taking care of people and supporting their healing, movement, retraining and growth. She received her BS in kinesiology from UNLV and her MS in occupational therapy from Touro University. Katie ran track and cross country in high school and college and has left me in the dust since forever. She has sped through many 5ks, half-marathons and marathons including the Boston Marathon in 2013 with a time of 3:33. Katie is a hard worker and is the one you want working with you when you come out of surgery. She is one of the most generous humans I know and the best sister ever.
We talk about the importance of self-care as Katie is a full time OT and full time mom who recognizes that if she is going to be able to give to others, she has to take care of herself first. Katie talks about the importance of good coaches and how they have had a lasting impact on her as a runner. We talk about the challenges of completing the Boston Marathon and how the bombing at the end of this race in 2013 created challenges for her in following races and also a catalyst for growth. She plans to eventually do a 50 miler someday. Katie talks about seeing people every day who have physical limits and pain and how much gratitude she has to be able to move her healthy body daily. She shares how therapy has helped her get through all the things!
