Episode Summary:

Today we’re chatting with Suzanne Brown. Suzanne is a full-time mom to 2 young boys, wife, part-time business and marketing strategy consultant, writer, and avid international traveler. She helps businesses understand how marketing can help their bottom line and helps them work better with their marketing agencies.

Before focusing on her own business endeavors about 4 years ago, Suzanne worked at various large marketing agencies in Austin, New York, Miami, Chicago and San Antonio. Suzanne has more than 15 years of experience managing and developing integrated marketing campaigns and projects for primarily Fortune 500 companies.

In mid-2013, in addition to her consulting work, Suzanne started researching for her book, “Mompowerment: Insights from Successful Professional Part-time Working Moms who Balance Career & Family,” to share advice and insights from over 100 part-time working moms. She also just gave a talk at TEDx SMU Women.

Suzanne received her MBA in marketing and a BBA in Finance from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas - Austin. She also holds a BA in Spanish from UT Austin.

Suzanne and her family live in Austin, Texas.

  • You’ll receive some tips you can use to begin to craft your own part-time schedule, even if you work for a demanding company, and even if no one else in your organization is doing it.
  • You’ll also hear the broader social shifts that are occurring across the U.S. that we hope will support companies to adapt to working family needs so we can keep talented working parents in the workplace.

WPR002: My "I Can't Do This Anymore" Working Mom Moment

Episode Summary:

Today I’m going to do one of my “Moments of Truth” episodes, where I tell you a personal story from a moment in my past when I learned an important life lesson. In all of these Moments of Truth episodes, my goal is to pinpoint that moment where there was a fundamental shift in my perspective in life. These moments changed who I was as a person on a deeper level. And now that I have some hindsight (and honestly, I’ve done YEARS of therapy and learning and self-reflection and introspection on some of these issues), so I can look back and see that there was a pretty clear BEFORE and an AFTER to these moments. So today I wanted to drill down and analyze the details of actually HAPPENED in this situation to shape the trajectory of my life. And hopefully, if you’ve gone through anything similar or if you’re going through something like this now, you can benefit from some of the hard stuff I went through and maybe it won’t be quite so hard for you.

Today I’ll be sharing with you my “I can’t do this anymore” working mom moment. There was a moment on my path as a working mom where I hit rock bottom, so to speak. There was a point where I saw the type of life I was living, and I knew I couldn’t continue going on that way. In my story today, I’m going to paint a picture of what my life looked life BEFORE this moment. Then I’ll go through the transformation that took place for me, and then I’ll give you an idea of what the AFTER picture looks like now too.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:

  • You’ll hear an honest and authentic recount of the moment when I realized that I couldn’t keep up the pace of my demanding working parent life.
  • I break down this experience and paint two pictures for you: my BEFORE picture (which was pretty dreary, but probably quite relatable to most of you), and my AFTER picture (what my life is like now).
  • I isolate the important lessons I learned as I transitioned from that broken, exhausted working mom in to the more relaxed and balanced working mom I am today (including concrete action steps you can utilize in your own life).

WPR004: The "I Don't Have Enough Time" Struggle

Episode Summary:

Today I’m going to be talking about this phrase and this concept that I really can’t escape these days: The “I Don’t Have Enough Time” Struggle.

I know if you’re a working parent, you’ve probably uttered these words more than once. When people ask how you’re doing, you respond “I’m so busy! I just can’t keep up!” When you’re running late to yet another meeting or appointment or even a fun social engagement, you quickly say “I’m so sorry I’m late, I just don’t know where the time went!” And when I ask working parents what they’re biggest struggle is, they don’t even pause before they say: “I just don’t have enough time!”

So today I wanted to dive a little deeper into this idea that we just don’t have enough time as working parents. Do we have LIMITED time? Of course! We all do. And there’s just no way around that. Do we have ENOUGH time? Well, at the end of the day, it’s all about your perspective. I personally feel like I have plenty of time for the things that are important to me now... but 3 years ago I was singing a VERY different tune. So what changed? I have the same number of hours in the day that I did back then? So what’s different for me now?

That’s really what we’re going to talk about today. We’re going to explore how we can change things in our daily lives so we can actually feel like we have enough time. And I’ll go through 3 things that I really had to learn in my own life to stop feeling this “I don’t have enough time” struggle.

What You’ll Learn in this Episode:

  • You’ll learn what’s TRULY holding you back from having enough time (it’s simpler than you think!).
  • We’ll explore how we can change certain things in our daily lives so we can actually feel like we have enough time.
  • And I’ll go through the 3 main things I really had to learn in my own life to stop feeling this “I don’t have enough time” struggle.
