Wild + (finally fcking) Free: Real, Raw Stories of the Disruptors, Rebels + Revolutionaries

Claire Connelly is a certified Yin, Vinyasa, Core and Chair Yoga Instructor and Holistic Wellness Coach. Since early 2017 she has been coaching women to explore the benefits of what slowing down feels like in their bodies. Claire’s passion is to create a deeply nourishing environment where self-compassion, self-acceptance and connection can be cultivated through yoga and wellbeing coaching.
Claire’s gentle inclusive nature enables her to make all her students feel comfortable, and the yoga practice very accessible to everyone.
Claire can be found holding yoga classes in her local community and online. When she’s not teaching yoga she is often minding her grand babies, tending to her veggies and cooking wholesome food in her 50’s style kitchen.
Claire entered perimenopause at the same time of burning out in a demanding business that was taking it’s toll, her husband being given a Parkinson’s diagnosis, her kids leaving home and remembers it feeling way too bloody hard.
In this episode, we dive into:
- Claire’s denial and soul-searching after her husband’s diagnosis, and an honest share about the impact her caring role has taken on on her energy and relationship
- Her journey from selling her graphic design business, downsizing her home, pivoting to yoga and well-being coaching and completely overhauling her lifestyle as a result ... including how she gave up smoking after “smoking her way around Italy for her 50th birthday!”
- How she has since learnt to listen to her body’s needs, to rest and restore when she is depleted and how the 50 year old version of herself - burnout, losing weight, not sleeping and so unhappy - would not even believe this life + business was possible
- How becoming embodied and the transition to post menopause has opened up more wisdom and a lot more trust for Claire - good news for all of us in the messy middle that is for sure!

Cut the Crap + Keep Everything Else with Kate Codrington

Kate is the author of Second Spring: the self-care guide to menopause. Published by Harper Collins, it’s the first book to give a psychological map for menopause, one of the top ten self-help books of 2022 according to The Independent. Kate mentors people in perimenopause and beyond, 1-2-1 online, runs groups, nature-based Yoga Nidra sessions, hosts Life - An Inside Job podcast, and creates multi-level art textile projects. When she’s not doing these things you’ll find her playing in her compost heaps.

I read Kate’s book over the Christmas holidays and it was a big part of me feeling a shift in my feelings towards perimenopause. Although I had done a lot of research, and interviewing and investigating in my head, if I am honest my heart still felt like it perimenopause was something to be endured, rather than something to be embraced.

I am so honoured to include Kate’s deep wisdom in the pod, it was such a fun, illuminating and deeply pleasurable experience!

We chat about:

The seasonal approach to our cycles and how we move through very natural phases of Spring and Summer (and more outward focussed attention) to Autumn and Winter (more inwards focussed attention) and how this helps us to understand the unfolding of our journey through Menopause

The psychological phases of menopause - Separation (Autumn), Surrender and Emergence (both Winter) and Second Spring - and gentle, practical (omg actually doable!) self care suggestions for our own care and support

Kate’s shift from fashion in her 20s to holistic massage and how her work has evolved to include psychotherapy, pregnancy and abdominal massage, menstrual medicine, menopause doula support and yoga nidra

How healing our old wounds is a natural part of the Separation Phase and how this can play out for people with significant big T trauma including PTSD and CPTSD

An overall philosophy on how to soften into Menopause, summarised by Kate’s straight talking advice “Cut the Crap, Keep the Good Stuff, that goes for food, relationships, obligations, all of it”

Standing Up for the Sisterhood with Dr Ginni Mansberg

Dr Ginni Mansberg is a Mum of 3, and has been a GP for almost 30 years, and has a practice in Sans Souci in Sydney, Australia. As a GP, she has a special interest in menopause which led to her writing a bestselling book, The M Word: How to Thrive in Menopause (and 5 others!).

In her “spare time”, she’s a TV celebrity doctor on Sunrise, Medicine or Myth, and Embarrassing Bodies Down Under, Cofounder and Medical Director of ESK (an evidence based skin care company she founded with her husband Daniel) Cofounder of Don’t Sweat It and a Strategy and Comms consultant.

We cover:

  • HRT: old studies, their misinterpretation, the reason why some GPs are still telling their patients HRT is dangerous; and the new evidence for the use and effectiveness of HRT
  • The gamut of HRT options, and the importance of fitting the HRT option to the budget, lifestyle, preference and importance of what an individual woman wants to solve most in her own Menopausal journey
  • The need for raising workplace awareness, and the enormous impact that Menopause is taking on working women and the Australian Institute of Trustees (AIST) estimate that it will cost women more than $17 billion in lost earnings and superannuation
  • The importance of understanding and acknowledging the entire range of experiences of Menopause, and just how important it is for the Sisterhood to Stand up for one another, and not diminish another woman’s experience
  • Dr Ginni’s own perimenopause experience so far, and how “protecting my vagina” has been part of her proactive approach
  • The range of vaginal symptoms of perimenopause, importance of early intervention to treat these symptoms and Dr Ginni’s approach to proactively including this in GP consults
  • Dr Ginni’s part in a meeting with Federal Parliament members this coming week to discuss funding for Menopause, and the need for funding in research, workplace education and GP education
  • The changes to our skin as we age, the drastic drop in collagen which occurs through the menopause, and how Dr Ginni and her husband Daniel came to create their own skin care range
