Unofficial Partner Podcast - UP204: The UP Women’s Street Football Brainstorm

UP204: The UP Women’s Street Football Brainstorm

10/26/21 • 40 min

Unofficial Partner Podcast

This week we’ve assembled another group of very expensive expert advisers to brainstorm a new sports property that will make billions for its creators (minus Unofficial Partner commission, cash only).

The idea comes from our friend and former podcast guest Gundeep Anand, who in 2016 created The Last Stand, a street football tournament aimed at uniting communities and breaking down social, cultural and religious barriers through sport.

Now Gundeep is launching a women’s street football version in the centre of Birmingham next month and we got a group together to see how we can help.

Joining Richard and Gundeep are Ricardo Fort and Michaela Gooden.

Ricardo was head of Coca Cola and Visa global sport sponsorship programmes and now runs his own consultancy, Sport by Fort, advising rights holders, brands and other investors in how to make sport work for them.

Michaela is a former professional footballer for Fulham who became an agent with Magna Sports Management, where she oversees a roster of male and female players including several WSL stars and England internationals.

If you work on the sponsor or media side of sport, or for an agency looking to learn more, you can get in touch with us, or go direct to Gundeep.

Every episode of Unofficial Partner can be found by using the big podcast providers, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts or via your favourite podcast app.

UP205: Media coverage of women’s sport

This week the Women’s Sport Trust released some new research, commissioned by them and carried out by the Futures agency, who monitored UK media coverage of women’s sport over the course of the last year.

The data is available via the Trust’s website.

What are the key findings of this research, what works and what doesn’t when it comes to the job of attracting more people to watch and to stay watching beyond the big quadrennial events and individual star performances.

To answer these and several more questions, we invited Chris Hurst, Jo Osborne and Victoria Cotton to unpick the data and share their considerable experience on this topic.

Chris has been a Trustee of the Women’s Sport Trust since 2017, having previously worked for organisations including the Premier League, the ICC, BBC Sport and Nielsen, and is now a sports consultant. He is also a Non-Executive Director of the Rugby Football League.

The view from the media side of this discussion is brought by Jo Osborne and Vicks Cotton, two of the most accomplished and experienced sports television producers working today. Vicks is Executive Producer of Live Streaming at BBC Sport, covering major events including women’s football, netball and The Hundred.

Jo is an Executive Producer at Sky Sports, covering a range of programming including Netball Superleague, The Hundred and the Women’s Super League.
