TMJ Show - TheMDJourney Podcast - TMJ 084: How To Use Picmonic To Study For USMLE Step 1 [Get A 250+]
play

02/06/21 • 9 min

If you’re a med student getting ready for USMLE Step 1, I understand there’s a lot of pressure on how to prepare for the exam. Let me help you lessen the stress by introducing a resource that can eliminate the guesswork of where to begin and what to study, and get you a step closer to 250+, Picmonic!
As a medical resident who has gone through all the exams from Step 1 to 3, I remember what it was like to study for Step 1 and it was before the results became pass/fail. I can see how someone can get lost in the preparation. It doesn’t help when you hear stories of Step 1 questions continue to make an appearance as far as Step 3.
So, a lot of medical students like yourself, google and search YouTube about the Krebs Cycle, read the First Aid book, and so on. You spend hours in one resource, do study groups and all-nighters on some topics, but still feel like you’re not doing enough.
Yet, you don’t know which topic to spend more time on. Not all study materials are accessible or help with retention. Worst of all, you think you’re ready but on test day, you end up forgetting everything. It’s terrifying and there’s nothing else you can do by then.
It’s not too late! I’ve coached several medical school students and something I’ve noticed from them is that resource selection is essential. Don’t get drawn into what everybody else is using, think about what is easy to use, high-yield, and gets you quizzed to be ready.
One resource that I highly recommend is Picmonic.
It will save you so much time on what to study with their playlists, be efficient with what you need to know, and help you engage with the materials making them far more memorable by the time you take a seat and start answering.
How does Picmonic do all of that? Check this video out in this Picmonic-filled episode of the TMJ Show!

TMJ Show - TheMDJourney Podcast - TMJ 083: How To Study For Step 3 With Residency [Step-By-Step]
play

01/30/21 • 13 min

The USMLE Step 3 is still fresh in my mind. After studying, taking and thinking about how the test went, all while doing residency, there definitely are a lot of lessons learned.

After Step 1 and Step 2, med students already have an idea on how USMLE exams go and how to prepare for them. By the time Step 3 rolls in, you’d have close to a complete plan of which resources to trust and what strategies work for you.

But this time, you’re no longer just a med student, you’re a medical resident juggling your clerkship rotations and Step 3 preparations. It may seem impossible, but you can absolutely plan out, study and get through Step 3!

Planning isn’t always everything, but it can most certainly help as you take the exam on. I will share with you how important having a light rotation schedule is, and having one great resource like UWORLD can be in forming a cohesive plan to get you ready for test day.

TMJ Show - TheMDJourney Podcast - TMJ 082: USMLE Step 3 Reaction [How Hard Was It]
play

01/27/21 • 8 min

I finally took Step 3!
I had my views on how easy or hard certain parts of the test would be. The test affirmed some of those, but had some pleasant surprises along the way.
We’ve talked a lot about Step 1 and Step 2, the different ways to study and resources a med student can use. So, when Step 3 came along, I had a better idea on how to prepare and what resources to trust. Sometimes, you can get all the way to this point and be all-test-out to take on another one.
One thing I can tell you that I wish I could have planned out better before taking the exam is; I should have taken it during a lighter clinical rotation. My busy residency work in the ICU definitely took out time I could have had for more questions, case studies, and a review of Step 1.
Step 3 has its challenges and pleasant unexpected questions, but it merits the 1-2 month’s worth of reading, going through a lot of UWORLD questions, reviewing bio stats and more!
I get into Step 3, and my reaction and thoughts afterwards in this episode of the TMJ Show!

The COVID-19 pandemic took over 2020 and we can only hope for things to get better this year. But what is life actually like to take care of COVID-19 patients especially in the ICU!?
I can tell you, there’s a lot of humble pie, an appreciation for what a united team can do, and a reminder of the sacrifice and important good work healthcare workers do in this moment of crisis.
When I was first assigned to the ICU, I wasn’t really sure what the situation was like for COVID patients. Once I was actually there, it was truly a humbling experience seeing a patient go from 5, 10, 15 to 80+ days in the hospital.
You can truly see how important a unified and collective team is as they handle the actual treatment of patients, admin work, communication with worried relatives, and more.
In times like this, I am reminded of the limits of doctors and healthcare machines. Sometimes, even putting ventilators to the max level still won’t ensure a patient’s chance of survival.
All you can do is wait.
My experience in the COVID ICU while brief, is definitely something I will carry with me moving forward in my M.D. journey. And I want to make sure that you get to know what it’s like and learn more about the rigid and risky work healthcare professionals do to fight this pandemic.

Picmonic is a great learning platform that can play a big role in helping med students study, remember and prepare for their clinical rotations and have a better path towards honors. But how exactly does it do that!?
By the time you get to your 3rd or 4th year and start preparing for your clinical clerkship, you’ve probably heard enough buzz about it to maybe get super excited, really nervous or somewhere in between. You can google and ask your friends and get an idea of what it may be like but it doesn’t always work and help for every med student.
The team from Picmonic knows what it feels like to start looking around for a resource that can help medical students in preparing and studying for clinical rotations and med school in general.
Picmonic is founded by med students and has spent years understanding and delivering the true needs of fellow med students to not only graduate but do so, with honors. It is truly a platform by students and for students
Countless future doctors have used the platform to get to where they are today with convenient audio and video options, memorable mnemonics, effective curation and many more.
Let me show you exactly what I mean and why I recommend Picmonic to help you succeed in your rotations, with less stress!

TMJ Show - TheMDJourney Podcast - TMJ 070: How To Get Better Grades In Medical School Using Just One Tip
play

11/19/20 • 8 min

How do you get better grades in medical school with just one tip!?

Med students use many strategies to study, memorize and prepare for tests and rotations to up their grades. Some listen to lectures and take down notes, and call themselves prepared. Others use apps and other tools like Anki and flashcards to get them ready. And still others look for inspirational boost from a video or a quote to keep them going for the aspired 4.0 GPA.

These study motivational techniques are great and work a lot better than others. But if you want to drill down to just one tip to help you get better grades, then, learn how to get comfortable in failing and use a timer.

This is a med school study tip that I used to help me graduate with honors, and has helped my students improve their grades. It may sound strange or feel uncomfortable at first, as with most new strategies, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction to better retention, understanding of the lessons and higher grades!

The best part about this is; you are not too late or even too early to start using this so if you’re a pre-med you can do this too

Check out this one tip to help you get better grades in med school on this episode of the TMJ show!

We’re finally talking about Step 3; an overview on what it is, my study schedule and more!

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 3 is the last test you have to take to become a licensed medical doctor in the United States. It definitely sets itself apart from Step 1 and Step 2 with the pressure of it being the last test standing on your way to get that converted M.D. In Step 3, you’ll also get a mix of case simulation and multiple-choice exams which can be quite daunting.

In a few weeks, I am finally taking the test and I will walk you through my thoughts, preparation and experience through it all. This will be the start of a video series where we’ll talk about everything Step 3 so you’d know what to expect and become better prepared for it

I have started laying out a plan, a process and my initial thoughts on how to tackle this. I have a schedule and UWORLD ready, but things can definitely change especially while balancing my studies with work in the hospital. When that happens, this series will cover them too and explain why.

Take a peek at the beginning of my Step 3 journey in this episode of the TMJ Show!
