TMJ 082: USMLE Step 3 Reaction [How Hard Was It]
01/27/21 • 8 min
I finally took Step 3!
I had my views on how easy or hard certain parts of the test would be. The test affirmed some of those, but had some pleasant surprises along the way.
We’ve talked a lot about Step 1 and Step 2, the different ways to study and resources a med student can use. So, when Step 3 came along, I had a better idea on how to prepare and what resources to trust. Sometimes, you can get all the way to this point and be all-test-out to take on another one.
One thing I can tell you that I wish I could have planned out better before taking the exam is; I should have taken it during a lighter clinical rotation. My busy residency work in the ICU definitely took out time I could have had for more questions, case studies, and a review of Step 1.
Step 3 has its challenges and pleasant unexpected questions, but it merits the 1-2 month’s worth of reading, going through a lot of UWORLD questions, reviewing bio stats and more!
I get into Step 3, and my reaction and thoughts afterwards in this episode of the TMJ Show!

TMJ 081: How To Get More Done In Less Time In Med School
Many aspiring doctors wonder how former med students got more done in less time during their stay in medical school.
So many can crumble under the pressure and get overwhelmed by the 8-10 hour days of med school life. It’s always one thing after another from Step 1 and dedicated prep, Step 2, clinical clerkship, preparing for the match and so on!
I have heard this concern a lot from my coaching students. Sometimes the long days and the thought of the next big test can get in the way of your daily preparation.
There’s only so much med students can do in a given time. It’s not like 24/7 can be dedicated to studying. Some have social and personal lives, groceries and chores to do, and a lot in life won't always coordinate with you to make sure you have ample time to prepare.
So in this video, I share a way to be more productive, help with your time management, be better organized, and get you ready to tackle whatever med school gives you.
Check out the sheet used and how it helps get things done in this episode of the TMJ Show.

TMJ 083: How To Study For Step 3 With Residency [Step-By-Step]
The USMLE Step 3 is still fresh in my mind. After studying, taking and thinking about how the test went, all while doing residency, there definitely are a lot of lessons learned.
After Step 1 and Step 2, med students already have an idea on how USMLE exams go and how to prepare for them. By the time Step 3 rolls in, you’d have close to a complete plan of which resources to trust and what strategies work for you.
But this time, you’re no longer just a med student, you’re a medical resident juggling your clerkship rotations and Step 3 preparations. It may seem impossible, but you can absolutely plan out, study and get through Step 3!
Planning isn’t always everything, but it can most certainly help as you take the exam on. I will share with you how important having a light rotation schedule is, and having one great resource like UWORLD can be in forming a cohesive plan to get you ready for test day.
Learn more about how to prepare for Step 3 during residency, and more of my ongoing USMLE Step 3 series in this latest video!
