TMJ 080: What It's Like Taking Care of COVID-19 Patients [Life In The COVID ICU]

The COVID-19 pandemic took over 2020 and we can only hope for things to get better this year. But what is life actually like to take care of COVID-19 patients especially in the ICU!?
I can tell you, there’s a lot of humble pie, an appreciation for what a united team can do, and a reminder of the sacrifice and important good work healthcare workers do in this moment of crisis.
When I was first assigned to the ICU, I wasn’t really sure what the situation was like for COVID patients. Once I was actually there, it was truly a humbling experience seeing a patient go from 5, 10, 15 to 80+ days in the hospital.
You can truly see how important a unified and collective team is as they handle the actual treatment of patients, admin work, communication with worried relatives, and more.
In times like this, I am reminded of the limits of doctors and healthcare machines. Sometimes, even putting ventilators to the max level still won’t ensure a patient’s chance of survival.
All you can do is wait.
My experience in the COVID ICU while brief, is definitely something I will carry with me moving forward in my M.D. journey. And I want to make sure that you get to know what it’s like and learn more about the rigid and risky work healthcare professionals do to fight this pandemic.

TMJ 079: How To Use Picmonic To Study For Clinical Rotations [How To Get Honors]
Picmonic is a great learning platform that can play a big role in helping med students study, remember and prepare for their clinical rotations and have a better path towards honors. But how exactly does it do that!?
By the time you get to your 3rd or 4th year and start preparing for your clinical clerkship, you’ve probably heard enough buzz about it to maybe get super excited, really nervous or somewhere in between. You can google and ask your friends and get an idea of what it may be like but it doesn’t always work and help for every med student.
The team from Picmonic knows what it feels like to start looking around for a resource that can help medical students in preparing and studying for clinical rotations and med school in general.
Picmonic is founded by med students and has spent years understanding and delivering the true needs of fellow med students to not only graduate but do so, with honors. It is truly a platform by students and for students
Countless future doctors have used the platform to get to where they are today with convenient audio and video options, memorable mnemonics, effective curation and many more.
Let me show you exactly what I mean and why I recommend Picmonic to help you succeed in your rotations, with less stress!

TMJ 081: How To Get More Done In Less Time In Med School
Many aspiring doctors wonder how former med students got more done in less time during their stay in medical school.
So many can crumble under the pressure and get overwhelmed by the 8-10 hour days of med school life. It’s always one thing after another from Step 1 and dedicated prep, Step 2, clinical clerkship, preparing for the match and so on!
I have heard this concern a lot from my coaching students. Sometimes the long days and the thought of the next big test can get in the way of your daily preparation.
There’s only so much med students can do in a given time. It’s not like 24/7 can be dedicated to studying. Some have social and personal lives, groceries and chores to do, and a lot in life won't always coordinate with you to make sure you have ample time to prepare.
So in this video, I share a way to be more productive, help with your time management, be better organized, and get you ready to tackle whatever med school gives you.
Check out the sheet used and how it helps get things done in this episode of the TMJ Show.
