Thyme in the Studio: Art & Wellness - Expansion and Contraction: Let's Dance with Kelly Buwalda

Expansion and Contraction: Let's Dance with Kelly Buwalda

Thyme in the Studio: Art & Wellness

so excited to share this episode #72 with Kelly Buwalda. We get into dance, thai massage, performance, why do babies dance and how we innately crave rhythm. We talk about singing to dogs, dancing for water with children and moving on air on rooftops. What am I talking about? Listen to find out more!

This episode is full of ideas to get you moving and shaking and climbing mountains in your mind and in the world. For example, Kelly was inspired by another quietly strong woman to climb Kilimanjaro for her 40th birthday and she shares some of the struggles and support from that journey.

A little bit more about my guest today.

Ways to get inspired and move more and how our efforts and accomplishments are

Kelly Buwalda is an artist, educator, and adventurer. She is propelled by creativity and fueled by connection. Originally from Indiana, she has been creating and collaborating in NYC for nearly 20 years.  After acquiring her Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance & Psychology at Hope College (Holland, MI), she trained with National Dance Institute (NDI), a far-reaching dance education program founded by Jacques d'Amboise. She became a Teaching Artist with NDI in 2005, and has since taught thousands of elementary students, and directed At the River's Edge, NDI's 2018 "Event of the Year."  As a dancer, she performed for numerous project-based companies, working with choreographers Mei-Yin Ng, Erin Dudley, and Julio Rivera.  In 2010, she graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and became a certified Health Coach.  Years later, she studied Intuitive Thai Therapy with Sarah Seeley, and currently offers wellness sessions for groups and individuals. Kelly was awarded a 3-month artist-in-residency at Chez Bushwick in 2014, and her choreography was selected for Detroit Dance City Festival in 2016 & 2017.  She will be premiering solo dance films created during COVID with filmmaker Fred Hatt on February 3, 2021.  Among these and other pursuits, she loves her new role as dog mama.

About to hop to it , but before we do, I have a major favor to ask. If you like this show, please share it with a friend. Big thanks to you for your support, for listening and for doing what you do!

Lets jump in! cha cha cha.

71: How to pull yourself up when you are down with High Garden Tea

What do you do when you gotta start all over? Lean into this story and the sweet poetic voice of Leah Larabell to find out.

Leah Larabell is a nature-loving wife, mother and daughter who finds a great deal of purpose and satisfaction in sharing her love for the land.

Leah descended from a long line of Celtic Cunning Folk and has found her ancient gifts within the world of herbalism. After awakening this passion, she became obsessed with learning as much as possible and has dedicated over a decade of her life to rigorously studying and diligently practicing the art of herbalism. She has been taught by renowned herbal elders as well as Mother Nature herself.

As a clinical level herbalist, she considers herself a Western eclectic herbalist and is so grateful to the many plant wisdom keepers from many lands that passed down this art so she may carry it today.

Many experiences over the years have humbled her to consciously removing her ego from the herbal practice. Realizing, it’s not her who offers healing, but the plants who do the good work. Each one bringing some type of special knowledge or ability ready to help if you just know who to ask. With this, Leah never uses plants; instead, she calls upon them, asks for their help, looks toward them for insight, or simply sits by them for companionship.

This approach also allows Leah to offer an easy access point to interested, beginning herbalists. It is her goal to create as many Plantfolk and herbalists possible while on this earth walk.

She is a forever student of the land and eternally grateful for the lessons.

73: The Rest is Medicine with Rooted Birth Doula, Davinah Simmons

Davinah Simmons is a full spectrum doula, a childbirth and lactation educator, a facilitator, a writer and photographer. In this conversation we chatted about how rest is medicine and what it has been like to be a full spectrum doula during this pandemic. her doula practice has evolved over the last 2 years. We discuss rage and grief and ancestral healing and the range of emotions that occur during postpartum time. She created a worksheet for her clients to have difficult conversations ideally before a baby is born and we discuss the workshops she has hosted and plans to host in the future, the enneagram and racism, writing practices and rituals to help release energetic chords between self and others. Dancing for our grief and witnessing birth stories as a way to help bring more healing to this planet.

Oooh, and She was recently featured on NPR and it is a great episode. There will be a link to that in the show notes if you wanna hear that. And you can listen back to episode 30 for our chat from almost 2 years ago.
