The You Project

Marc Brackett is a Professor at Yale University and the Founder and Director of the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence. For over 20 years, his research has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health and performance. He has published over 150 scholarly articles and received numerous awards. He consults regularly with corporations, such as Facebook, Microsoft, GE, Amazon, Pinterest, and Google on integrating the principles of emotional intelligence into employee training and product design. In this chat, we explore the relationship between emotions and physical health, emotional regulation, his introversion, the relationship between emotions and outcomes, reading other’s emotions, giving people ‘permission to feel’ and share those feelings, his amazing EQ program that’s now in over 4,500 schools around the world called RULER (the 5 underlying skills in EQ: recognising, understanding, labelling, expressing and regulating) and lots more. *His latest book is called: ‘Permission to Feel’.

#993 Weird Science - Patrick & Tor

‘Weird Science’... an 1985 movie (remember Kelly LeBrock?) and also and accurate title for this chat. Patrick and Tor are back and this time we talk about the mental, emotional and social consequences of people staring at phones (and ignoring the people around them) in social situations, the potential role of artificial intelligence in hair regeneration, faecal transplants (poo therapy, of sorts), a new male contraceptive (ouch), a new technique for same sex conception for men, technology that lets us ‘speak’ to our dead relatives (kind of), a system that allows users to communicate with others remotely while embodying a humanoid robot (I was confused too), headlights that see around corners and mind-reading AI. Enjoy.EnterWrite to Tiffanee Cook

#995 Don't Wait For The Catastrophe - Harps & Tiff (PT1)

In this two-part TYP extravaganza, Tiff fires a bunch of questions, thoughts and topics at me and nearly two hours later, I come up for air. Chatty AF. Among other things, we talk about the balancing act between protecting people’s feelings and creating safe spaces (etc.) and empowering (and training) the same people to be more resilient and capable under pressure. We also talk about stuff culture, stuff identity and stuff obsession, why and how we waste our potential, waiting for the catastrophe, why mediocrity can be a gift, a thing called meta-accuracy, the upside of failure, why we keep doing the thing that doesn’t work and lots more. Enjoy.
