What do you want to be when you grow up?
08/27/19 • 8 min
Flashback to the Powerful Questions podcasts with Jenner.
We’ve been diving pretty deep for the past couple of episodes getting real with ourselves and making some big decisions. So this time we’re going to keep it light.
This week’s question is: What do I want to be when I grow up?
This week I want you to approach the question from the perspective of your younger self. How did you see your life going? I want you to write down the details. Did you imagine the kind of house you would live in? The city you’d live in? And don’t just focus on the kind of job you thought you’d have. Try to remember all of the details you dreamed up as a kid. For this week’s exercise, I’d like you to grab a pen, a piece of paper and write down everything that comes to mind. And don’t stop. This week I have created a free workbook with several prompts to help you explore this question.

For me, this exercise brought back some very specific memories. When I was younger, I wanted to be a dancer. And I was for most of my teenage years. As the middle child, I loved being the center of attention! And I loved dancing.
Whenever we would have a party I would put on my dress or leotard, use the back deck as my stage, and do my dance routine for our friends and family. I loved seeing the looks on my parents’ faces lit up with so much joy. When I would look into the crowd I wouldn’t see anyone who wasn’t smiling and enjoying the show...me! And I think that’s what lit me up the most...seeing how much fun everyone was having.
Now that I am a life coach I still get to be on stage doing speaking events and this podcast. And what lights me up now is seeing the looks on my clients’ faces when I guide them to through to a new perspective. If this exercise is emotionally difficult for you then you might consider hiring a life coach to help you through past issues on the way to personal freedom. I do offer a free 30-minute clarity session. You can find out more about this opportunity here! Next week, we will use your workbook as the launching pad for one of my most favorite exercises. If you enjoyed the podcast don’t forget to leave me a review on iTunes. Thank you for helping spread the word! Now, go get BIG!

Worried about change? How to make the right decision with confidence!
Flashback to Our Powerful Questions Podcast.
In this episode, I (Jenner Linden) discuss the process I have used with one of my life-coaching clients who was feeling disillusioned with her choice to pursue a degree. Essentially, she is wondering if it is time to make a change in her life.
This week’s question is: How do I know if I’m ready for a change? One of my clients is working toward a degree and finds herself at a crossroads. Should she finish her degree? Go on and complete another degree? Or seek another path?
As a life coach, this is one of the key questions I see time and time again. People come in the door asking “How do I know I am ready for a change?” even if they aren’t aware that is their deeper question.
The first step is to go back to the start and ask ourselves, “why did I make this decision in the first place?” For my client, it was because she thought education would bring her a sense of security and a sense of worth.
I talk about how I helped her get clear on her reasons so she could make an empowering decision. At this point you may be wondering facing a major decision in your life, I’m here to help!

Be the change you wish to see in the world
Flashback! Another goodie from the Powerful Questions Podcast vault!
Today’s show is going to be a bit of a departure from my format. It’ll be a little more personal and a little more off the cuff. You see, my grandpa has been in hospice and may be passing on in the next few days. [update - the day I recorded this podcast May 9th, 2017 my Grandpa passed away]
It’s been a difficult time for my family as we have to say goodbye to this incredible man.
One of the things I love my grandpa is that he is genuinely interested in the lives of everyone around him. And not just “how’s your business going?” But he really wants to know the inner workings of my practice. And he is like that with everyone in his life his kids, grandkids, and now even the great-grandkids.
In just the past year he had to give up driving his own car, at the age of 92. And at 88 he flew out to Denver to be at our wedding.
In the past few months, I’ve been visiting him often and bringing him orange juice, coffee, and donuts. We’ve had some very authentic conversations, and we come from very different generations and disagree about many of the major issues facing the world right now.
But that doesn’t stop us from having heart-centered conversations. And I’ve come to really cherish that because there are very few people I’m close to right now who have such a different worldview.
Right now there are so many divides in the world. And when I see cruel responses posted to cruel status updates, I find it heartbreaking. When I am tempted to fire off a response I try to remember Gandhi's famous quote, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
We must take responsibility for our own actions and contributions in the world. Looking at the other guy will not create the change we are looking for. Ask yourself, where do I need to take responsibility to be the change I want to see?"
To honor my grandpa, I am committed to putting my judgments aside and having more heart-centered conversations with others, even those I disagree with. When we do the inner work, it will create real change in the world.
It’s one of the things I love most of my work as a mindset coach. When I am able to transform limiting beliefs of just one person it can have a profound impact on the world and its consciousness.
