The Wild Ones - My 6 Secrets to Finding Balance

My 6 Secrets to Finding Balance

10/03/18 • 22 min

The Wild Ones

This is the first installment of my new monthly series called Monthly Rituals, I know original. I want this to be a way to share the tools and modalities that I use, and I am planning to align these rituals with the energy of the month.

This episode will release the week of my mom’s birthday which is October 2nd. It will be her first birthday we will be celebrating without her here with us in the physical sense. To remember her, I have invited her brother and sisters and other family members over to plant a tree in my backyard and come together for stories and support.

This month we are in the midst of Libra energy, the scales of justice. And there is always a need to rebalance ourselves, so this month I am going to share my six secrets to finding balance.

  1. Flower essences: I’ve been using these for a while because I am very empathic, so I have been using Elm and Walnut. For my grief, I have been using Wild Rose and Star of Bethlehem. Wild Rose is for those times when you feel all of the joy has been sucked out of your life. Star of Bethlehem works to neutralize grief. Below are some links to my favorite brands.
  2. Cleaning up the diet: In general, I watch my diet very closely, but after the funeral, many friends and relatives brought over comfort food. I found myself eating more sugar, more bread, and more wine than normal. After giving myself a grace period, I shifted to healing my gut. Scientists are finding that the gut plays an incredibly important role in the production of serotonin, the happiness hormone.
  3. Soaking up the sun and vitamin D: The sun is a source of energy and healing. Allow yourself to smile and bask in this creative energy. I most enjoy planting my feet in the ground and allowing the earth and the sky to both support me. I just realized that the first three items on this list are healing modalities from the earth! I’m such a Virgo!
  4. Get vulnerable with friends and family: I’ve noticed a few times over the past couple months how some of my friends have shared on social media, and I’ve been heartened by the support they’ve gotten. I was moved to share my mom’s eulogy online. My husband and I wrote her eulogy and included several pieces of her own writing. At the end, I asked people to let me know if they had read the whole thing, and I was so touched by the people who connected to my mom and got to know her the way I did.
  5. Acceptance: One of the most important tools during a difficult time is finding ways to finding an appropriate level of self-acceptance. I’ve realized I’ve been really hard on myself for sleeping in often, and I’ve had several recent clients who have been wanting to do away with a Netflix addiction. Instead of beating yourself up, I suggest journaling and other forms of introspection to examine what’s really going on.
  6. Breathwork: If you’ve been following my work for a while, you know the power of breathwork to push through blockages, grief, trauma, and wounds. The first time I ever did breathwork I called my husband immediately to tell him all about “the most amazing thing I just did.”

I have a 30-minute breathwork meditation on releasing grief and trauma, and I have added it the “Secret Episodes” section of my Patreon. These bonus episodes and special content are available to patrons at the five dollars a month level. Here is a link if you are interested in learning more.

How to begin again after 40

In episode two of You’re So Bohemian Podcast I interview Lisa Harris, who empowers women through her projects including Unveiled Beauty and Fashion meets Poetry. In October, I will be one of the featured speakers at her Unveiled Beauty: Cultivating You! event in Minneapolis and Lisa turns the tables and interviews me about why I was drawn to share my story at her event.

This episode begins with Lisa reading her poem True North. She goes on to share her personal story about “uncovering her most powerful self” and discusses the power of owning the entirety of our story.

In my last interview (a year ago) with Lisa, we discussed the dynamics behind Lisa presenting her own story at Unveiled Beauty: Cultivating You! for the first time. She had created such a wonderful showcase for others, but hadn’t stood in the spotlight herself. After her presentation, she reflects on the vulnerability her speakers felt, the transformative healing power of the event, and how speaking from experience changes everything.

In the last year, Lisa has come to see the purpose of these events very differently and believes they offer something very unique in the spaces of Women’s Empowerment. The raw vulnerability of these presentations makes both the speakers and the audience more active participants in empowerment.

Like so many great projects, Fashion Meets Poetry, began with a time of personal difficulty and then transformation. Lisa was working a corporate job and raising two kids when she decided to “get quiet,” take a step back and begin writing. Her poetry connected her to herself and got the ball rolling. She reflects on a period in her life that could be called a “mid-life crisis” but she now understands how at age 36 she found it incredibly important to address experiences she had suppressed for twenty-five years.

We have a very candid discussion about self-care including priorities and building capacity to move to the next phase. Currently, her journaling and poetry play an important role in her self-care.

When Lisa asked why I was attracted to Unveiled Beauty: Cultivating You! I realized that we share a common mission: helping women find their voice. As I’ve crafted my speech I’ve realized there are elements of my story I haven’t shared so publicly before and I’m ready to integrate my past. Unveiled Beauty is currently expanding the wholistic training it provides speakers in connecting to their own story, writing, and public speaking. It will be exciting to see the next evolution!

If this podcast has inspired you to participate with Unveiled Beauty as a speaker or audience member, Lisa shares the qualities she is looking for in applications.

If you are looking to hear even from Lisa you can become a become a Patron of my podcast and get access to a full-length secret episode available on Patreon.

Find your power

“Something very beautiful happens to people when their world has fallen apart: a humility, a nobility, a higher intelligence emerges at just the point when our knees hit the floor.” Marianne Williamson

My knees have hit the floor several times over the past year, and I’ve had a major realization. On a recent Sunday I afternoon, I revamped my entire coaching business, and I’ve made it my mission to support other brilliant women to prepare for love. There will be more information coming about my group coaching designed to help you attract your soul partner.

Head over to jennerlinden.com to find out more.

My guest this week is Ivy Kaminsky of Findyourpower.org. I’ve gotten to know Ivy over the past few years and I’m so excited to share her with my audience.

Ivy took a graduate program in development studies in Africa after working for a corporate event planning company. She likes to describe her former job as “babysitting adults in cool places.” She eventually found herself aligning with several aspects of the job including the travel and gluttonous nature of the scene. After Ivy’s mom was diagnosed with cancer--she passed only two weeks later--she found her life and identity were incredibly shaken.

Ivy found her way to non-profit work and South Africa. She did her thesis project in a domestic abuse shelter in the Cape Flats, an apartheid relocation area in Cape Town. It was here that she had experiences that “sewed the seeds” for Find Your Power including a women’s empowerment tour that allowed her to shadow a young woman in order to pay her Lobola, or bride price, to her parents.

She turned down a promotion in higher education and took a Massive Open Online course in Social Entrepreneurship. She organized a team of fifty people of around the idea of women’s empowerment and the course drove her to write a business plan.

Ivy learned some valuable lessons about success and failure. She says crowdfunding takes an immense amount of time. She also says crowdfunding is difficult without a lot of media attention or a drive to ask people for money.

Another key takeaway from our discussion is her emphasis on needs-based assessments as the foundation of her work before creating an app or resource library.

Ivy’s largest event of the year Poetry Jam is coming up at Shindig in Minneapolis on Give to the Max Day. You can also find out more on Find Your Power’s Facebook Page.
