The Wellness Edit - How to develop easy healthy habits with The Happy Pear Twins

How to develop easy healthy habits with The Happy Pear Twins

01/26/22 • 47 min

The Wellness Edit

In this friendly and open chat, the Happy Pear Twins, Stephen and David Flynn, talk to Gemma about their journey running a plant-based business and what they’ve learnt along the way. Plus they share heaps of easy, achievable healthy habits – like how to start being plant-based, some quick plant-based recipes for busy people, and how to choose healthy ingredients (and what counts as a superfood).

With their beautiful, inspiring (but often funny) imagery the Twins are massive on Instagram and this podcast captures all that Irish magic in audio form! They talk about their daily ‘swimrise’ – sunrise swims in the ocean where they live in Greystones, Ireland and how these bring the power of nature and being connected with other people into their lives. The Happy Pear started out in 2004 with a tiny shop and a dream of helping people to eat more veg. Fast forward 17 years and the Happy Pear now consists of cafes, a roastery, a farm, a raft of products, online courses and cookbooks – along with hundreds of amazing employees and a community of over 1 million people. But their mission is the same as it ever was, to help everyone get healthier and happier, and this podcast will help you to do just that.

A GP’s guide to staying fit for life with Dr Zoe Williams

Dr Zoe Williams, perhaps best known as one of the resident GPs on This Morning, has a warm chat with fellow GP Gemma on today’s episode. They talk about the importance of lifestyle medicine and how it has become more mainstream since they started out as doctors. Zoe shares her story of her severe asthma and why she is such an advocate for the benefits of exercise as a social prescription for exercise from her childhood doctor is the reason she is where is she is today. Dr Zoe shares her tips on how exercise can lift your mood, how to get the best from your GP, plus her three ingredients for success. In this wide-ranging conversation, Zoe also talks about her experience as a new mum, and why she feels it’s so important to be honest on social media about motherhood.

This Morning’s resident GP Dr Zoe is a former Gladiator, rugby player and Healthy, the Holland & Barrett magazine, named her a Game Changer of the Year in 2020 for her work promoting Covid vaccinations particularly amongst the black community. As well as being a GP with lots of great, no-nonsense general health advice, Zoe is big on lifestyle and preventative medicine – she’s a runner and has increasingly spoken out about mental health and the need for human connection. She’s a new mum to baby Lisbon Lion (born last May) and has talked about how being a doctor has impacted motherhood.

Why we ALL need to know more about the menopause with Mariella Frostrup & Alice Smellie

Mariella Frostrup has been a distinctive voice in broadcasting for many years. In this episode she joins with health journalist Alice Smellie to talk about their book, Cracking the Menopause While Keeping Yourself Together, which brings their take on menopause - why we all need to know more about it, and what people who are going through perimenopause or menopause can do to understand it better and alleviate their symptoms. The conversation gets feisty as Mariella and Alice express their frustration at the general lack of knowledge about the menopause - which affects half the population - and the popular perception that menopause means ‘the end’ for women; in fact it’s the start of an exciting new life stage.

This episode is both a personal campaign from Mariella and Alice to break the stigma around menopause, and an invaluable resource - it’s packed with information and advice both from themselves and the many experts they have spoken to. As Mariella might put it, don’t think that if you’re not menopausal, this episode isn’t for you - listening to it will empower anyone who is interested in health and wellness.
