The Virgin Diabetic Podcast
03/03/21 • 27 min
"Did you know that sugar is more addictive than cocaine?"
In today's food industry, simple or refined sugars can be found in a wide variety of products and in different presentations: corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, round rice syrup and so on and so forth. These can be found in protein bars, breakfast bars, white bread, wheat bread, bagels, coffee cakes, doughnuts, pastries, candy, fruit juices, soft drinks, sports drinks and other processed foods, beverages and snacks. Don't get fooled by marketing strategies from the food industry. Carefully read the ingredients' list and learn what you're really putting into your body.
Do you know what "added sugars" really mean and how can they affect your glucose? Listen to find out!
Sugar is a huge contributing factor for anxiety, depression, mood changes, irritability and inflammatory disorders.
Food chemicals are often used to replace natural and/or refined sugars. When doing so, the food industry usually brands their products as "sugar free". What's actually happening is that these food chemicals provide sweetness and they can also lead to anxiety, depression, ADHD, leaky gut, Diabetes.

#9 Stop Telling Me What To Eat
The Virgin Diabetic Podcast
12/02/20 • 17 min
Being a diabetic usually means having people around us telling us what to eat. But beyond a healthy diet and changing some habits to improve our health, I consider the mental aspect around diabetes to be even more important than looking out after our eating routines.
In that matter: do you consider yourself a Reactive person or a Proactive one?
Most of us, when diagnosed with diabetes, start being reactive to tips, suggestions and recommendations. We get angry about the idea of giving up food that we love. But as time went by, I found that being a Proactive person yield better results to the process of reversing my diabetes.
"When you are on two or three or even more drugs and on insulin, you are not controlling your diabetes. You are reacting to it".
Some questions for you:
- Why don't you improve what you eat?
- Based on your current diet, are your glucose levels going up or down?
- Are you running out of good healthy food ideas?

Fatigue, brain fog, sleep issues, hearing loss, weight gain and inability to concentrate can easily be symptoms of aging. But beware because they could also mean that your body is triggering the Pre-Diabetes or Diabetes alarm regardless of your age.
Did you know that Diabetes is associated with high incidence of sleep disorders?
Besides helping you reduce stress and anxiety levels, performing simple breathing exercises before you go to bed can also help you get a better sleep. Listen to episode #10 Breath: The Magic Prescription with Nancy Gerald from Our Yoga Place to practice a simple, short but powerful breathing exercise.
If you are experiencing hearing loss or hearing issues due to Diabetes, I invite you to check out episode #4 with Dr. John Hoglund from Hoglund Family Hearing and Audiology Centers. You'll even find out how to book a free consultation with his team.
"Rather than thinking of Diabetes as a sugar problem(...) start thinking of it as an energy problem."
"High glucose levels can damage blood vessels to the brain resulting in brain fog. When these vessels get damaged, they are gone forever".

The Virgin Diabetic Podcast
12/01/21 • 22 min
Have you seen the commercials for diabetic drugs where the patient says the drug “unlocks the insulin inside of me”, and then you see people dancing and having a great time?
Sadly, that's not the reality.
Today we're talking about drugs like Victoza, Adlyxin, Trulicity, Ozempic which are weekly injections which sound wonderful that you only have to take a shot once a week! – keep in mind this is not insulin... and other drugs such as Rybelsus, Januvia, Tradjenta, Glipizide, and Glimepiride. Many of these actually do more than just work on your pancreas. They can also work on other organs.

#20 CBD and Diabetes with Stacy Bull from Your CBD Store
The Virgin Diabetic Podcast
05/19/21 • 29 min
You've probably heard about Hemp and CBD. There's a lot of buzz about how good and effective CBD is for treating multiple ailments and conditions, such as: anxiety, depression, inflammatory issues, pain relief, sleeping disorders and many more, but there's also quite some confusion about CBD and Marijuana: "Are they the same thing? Would I get high if I consume CBD products? Is CBD legal? Would it help me if I'm a diabetic? What's the link between CBD and Diabetes?
So, to learn about CBD and clear all of these doubts (and more), we brought Stacy Bull from Your CBD Store to the podcast, who's an expert on the matter.
Stacy is the General Manager for 3 Your CBD Store locations in Collier County, 2 currently in Naples and 1 on Marco Island. She has a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration from UW Milwaukee and has worked in ophthalmology, oncology and cardiology. Stacy says: "I always knew I wanted to work in the healthcare field and help others but if you would have told me I would be in the cannabis industry one day, I would have laughed (...) I absolutely love what I do, educating others on hemp derived cannabinoid products and promoting cannabinoid therapy as an alternative medicine."
GOLD MEDAL QUOTES
- “Right now the FDA does not regulate CBD products (...) Only 42% of CBD brands tested all their products for potency (...) Many of those 58% brands didn’t test for heavy metals or pesticides”.
