The Unlock Moment: find your purpose for leadership and life

When I talk to people who have experienced an Unlock Moment, a remarkable flash of clarity when they’ve figured out the path ahead, they often describe a moment of silence. It might be real silence, the absence of sound, or it might be that the world has slowed down for a moment – a shocking piece of news, a change in circumstances, that has caused them to stop and reflect.

What’s the deepest silence you’ve ever known? Today, amidst the mass proliferation of mental stimulation, this may be a difficult question to answer. Yet it’s a question that could contain a key to solving some of the most serious personal and even global challenges that we face. In their new book "Golden: The Power of Silence in a World of Noise", Justin Zorn and Leigh Marz invite us to rethink our definition of silence—not just as the absence of noise, but as a presence that can bring us energy, clarity, and deeper connection.

I’m keen to discover more about how you can find this silence in your everyday life, and through that silence discover the path to your own Unlock Moment. Let’s pause ..... listen ..... and dive in to this fascinating topic.

36 Dr Marshall Goldsmith: The Earned Life

In this remarkable Master Locksmith episode of The Unlock Moment, I meet Dr Marshall Goldsmith, the world's number one executive coach. A member of the Thinkers 50 Hall of Fame, Harvard Business Review named him the World’s #1 Leadership Thinker. He’s written or edited 43 books, which have sold over 2.5 million copies and been translated into 32 languages. In Amazon’s 100 best leadership-and-success books ever written, he has 2 of them, including my favourite leadership lesson of all, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. A former professor of management practice at the Dartmouth Tuck School of Business in New Hampshire, Marshall has worked with over 200 major CEOs and their management teams. On social media he has 1.4 million followers on LinkedIn and over 3 million views on YouTube. Marshall’s new book The Earned Life came out just recently. Subtitled Lose Regret, Choose Fulfilment, it offers practical advice aimed at helping us shed the obstacles that prevent us from creating our own fulfilling lives. With this book as your guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done – even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs – and live an earned life that is too fulfilling to dwell on the “what ifs”.

38 Ryan Hartman: The View from 100,000 Feet

For many years I’ve encouraged my corporate teams and my coaching clients to take a more 100,000 foot view of the world. We all have a habit of getting lost in the weeds sometimes and it’s a useful skill to be able to rise above the chaos and survey the big picture. So it made a huge amount of sense to bring someone on to the podcast who could help us do just that.

For space tech CEO Ryan Hartman, a life in the military, aerospace and defence prepared him for top leadership roles in some of the most cutting edge industries in the world. But what he discovered about himself and his own purpose was even more impactful. Flying fast, now the lesson of slowing down.

Ryan Hartman is the Chief Executive of space tech pioneer WorldView. Based in Tucson, Arizona, WorldView is unlocking opportunities through a low-cost, long-duration persistent high-altitude flight for commercial and government customers. That’s a lot of long words and I know Ryan’s going to bring it to life for you much better than I ever could.

But here on the Unlock Moment, we’re also fascinated in the personal journey. Ryan is a veteran of the US Air Force and Navy. He led the Unmanned Systems Directorate for aerospace and defence business Raytheon. And most recently he’s been President and Chief Executive of Insitu, a pioneer in the design, development and manufacturing of unmanned aircraft systems. His is a fascinating CV and I’m looking forward to finding out what he’s learned about leadership and purpose along the way in so many high performance environments.
