Style Revolution: Bishop's Cuts and Color Unveils the Secrets to Salon Success with Bishop's Cuts in Color's Leigh Feldman

The Shift Spotlight!

In this podcast episode, host Winter Baserva interviews Leigh Feldman, the CEO of Bishop's Cuts in Color. Bishop's Cuts in Color is a franchise organization that helps owners bring the Bishop's brand to their markets. Founded in 2001, the company's mission is to provide salon-level services at appropriate pricing, creating a safe and welcoming space for all types of people. What sets them apart is their gender-neutral pricing, a unique approach in the industry.

As someone who has grown within the company, Leigh has faced his fair share of challenges. One of the most surprising aspects for him was the different interpretations and perspectives among owners, managers, and employees. He emphasized the importance of understanding each situation and working together to find solutions.

Leigh shared how Bishop's Cuts in Color has taken steps to be a supportive and non-predatory franchise system. They have implemented a bucketed royalty system, where stores that require less support from the company pay lower royalties. This approach aligns with the owners' perspective that if they are running a well-oiled machine, they shouldn't have to pay the full amount.

The company has also repositioned its contracts to align with lease agreements, allowing franchisees to exit the system or make changes at the end of the term. However, 75% of their franchisees have chosen to renew their agreements due to the support provided by the company.

Amber revealed that she lived in India for five years and is passionate about fitness and mindset training. As a behavior analyst, Amber incorporates the science of behavior into her work. She believes in the power of training the mind and visualizing the person one wants to become. Amber's unique perspective as a consumer first, having a child on the autism spectrum, and working in various roles within the ABA field, allows her to ask the right questions and build the best company based on her journey.

When asked about the resources Amber wished she had when starting her company, she mentioned the ongoing challenge of ensuring that she has the right people in the right positions within her company. She admitted that in the past, she made the mistake of believing people based solely on what they say about their skills and abilities.

Amber emphasized the importance of looking beyond resumes and focusing on the true skills and qualities that her employees possess. She shared an example of hiring a billing manager who didn't have prior experience in that specific role but had the determination, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail necessary to excel in the position.
