467: LuAnn Nigara - A Well-Designed Business
The Self-Employed Life
02/06/19 • 46 min
A lot of creatives think we are doomed to a life without systems because that’s not our natural inclination. Our business is “us,” which makes it difficult to scale. I know that I personally have trouble making the connection between who I am as a photographer and my branding.
Whether or not systems come easily to you, it’s time to put on our “big-boy pants.” All businesses need to revisit the fundamentals of mission statements, values, systems, and customers. You have to believe in your business and your ability to run it. Yes, it’s all Business 101, but it works.
To remind us of the basics of a successful business, I’ve brought on podcast host, speaker and interior designer LuAnn Nigara. LuAnn co-owns, with her husband Vince and cousin Bill, Window Works in Livingston NJ. It is a 10-person firm, specializing in window treatments and awnings, with annual sales of 2 million+, and have serviced more than 25,000 clients since opening in 1982. LuAnn is also the host of the #1, 5-star rated, interior design business podcast, A Well-Designed Business.
To learn how to create your own well-designed business by dreaming, visualizing, and intending, download this episode now.
THE STAND UP WARRIOR
“Your ideal customer is like your favorite pair of jeans” -LuAnn Nigara
Highlights -- The best sale on the planet is a win-win.
- Carefully think about the intersection of confidence, goals, and a plan.
- If a car’s goal is to have four wheels, they all have to go in the same direction. To grow your company, you need to have non-negotiable values you teach your employees.
- The customer isn’t always right, but what you do want is an advocate for your company.
- When you can turn a negative customer into a happy one, that is your best advocate. They’ve seen the fulfillment of your marketing promise.
- Be a “systems freak.”
- Dream, visualize, and intend.

358: Talking Stick- Having a More Mindset
The Self-Employed Life
12/18/17 • 10 min
This episode will offer you a counter-balance to the next episode with Garrett Gunderson where we discuss overcoming a scarcity mindset. I'm suggesting that perhaps the way out of a scarcity mindset is by having a MORE mindset. Having a strong desire for more of whatever you want out of life-- be it money, influence, or happiness, to drive you forward. You'll hear how wanting more can draw you towards what you want and also help you walk away from what you don't.
The Talking Stick is in your hands now. Let us hear from you.

726: Mike Michalowicz - Get Different to Get Noticed
The Self-Employed Life
10/13/21 • 55 min
Best practices don’t always work for marketing. If you want to stand out and get noticed, don’t keep doing what everyone else is doing. That’s the advice from Mike Michalowicz, who is one of my favorite writers and my guest on today’s show. Mike is the author of a string of popular entrepreneurial books, including Profit First, The Pumpkin Plan, Clock Work, Fix This Next, and his latest book, Get Different. By his 35th birthday, Mike had founded and sold two multi-million dollar companies. He then became a small business angel investor and lost it all.
Mike has since devoted his life to discovering and sharing the very best small business entrepreneurial strategies. Thousands of companies have used his advice to drive profit, run on automatic, and determine what moves to make next. We discuss some of the concepts in his new book on how to market and get noticed. We talk about how and why we need to be different from other businesses in our field when marketing. If we want to share our products, gifts, or knowledge with the world, we need to stand out. It’s our responsibility to do so.
We talk about what holds people back and the importance of being different from your competitors to get noticed. We talk about sharing what makes you unique, not being too outrageous, and how showing weakness can be appealing. It’s also essential to get relevant data and enough data to understand what is working. Mike shares his system of DAD or differentiate, attract, and direct. We also talk about conducting the right marketing experiments and more.

577: David Priemer - Sell the Way You Buy
The Self-Employed Life
04/08/20 • 50 min
The greatest gift we’ve been given during this pandemic is the gift of time. Why not use this time then to hone in on developing specific skills, update our materials, and set ourselves up for coming out of this as prepared as ever? For those of us who provide services, this is the perfect time to reframe how we think about selling.
How do you want to be perceived as a seller? So often sellers think it’s better to provide our customers with a lot of choices. The truth is that most of our customers would prefer we ease their decision-making by applying our expertise and curating their options for them. If we are able to apply empathy to how we sell- without letting it make us lazy- we will be revered as someone helpful and customers will be grateful for the experience.
To dive into the essentials of modern selling, I’ve brought David Priemer onto the podcast.
David is widely recognized as a thought leader in the area of sales and sales leadership, and has been published in the Harvard Business Review and MIT Sloan Management Review as well as Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Inc. magazines. He has led top-performing sales teams at high-growth startups and is a former VP of Salesforce, where he created the Sales Leadership Academy program. His new book, Sell the Way You Buy, gets to the root of what truly drives people to buy, and arms salespeople with the insights and knowledge they need to respond to customers’ needs.
To learn how to genuinely put yourself in your buyers shoes, download this episode now.
THE BLUE SKY WARRIOR

937: Coaching Break – Legacy: A Connection to the Past, Future, and Your Customers
The Self-Employed Life
04/03/24 • 18 min
If you're anything like me, maybe you've thought about legacy as what you leave behind. Sure, it is that. But legacy is also your link to the future of your business and perhaps more importantly, it's the connection to your business that your customers want to feel today. In this episode, I explain the importance of legacy for your business and share four key points about legacy. Don't overlook the importance of legacy. It's about way more than the past.

854: Tara-Nicholle Kirke – Beyond Transactions: The Power of the Transformational Consumer
The Self-Employed Life
03/01/23 • 48 min
As self-employed business owners, we often have to consider our consumers’ mindsets and beliefs in order to sell a product or service. But there is a different way to think about consumers. Once you do – especially if you’re a coach, consultant, trainer, or health expert – this could really change your business. Today, I speak with Tara Nicholle Kirke about transformational consumers and transformational makers. She explains that the majority of consumers are in a transformational state, facing big-picture problems but struggling to make changes to solve them. The number one challenge they have is not understanding what they need to do to change the problems in their lives. But if we consider ourselves “transformational makers” as much as “business owners,” we can provide ways to help consumers make the transformation from their pain to their bliss.
Tara-Nicholle Kirke is a globally-recognized author, transformation expert, and spiritual strategist. She helps smart, successful people reach their potential and start living their Big Dreams, by undoing their self-sabotage patterns. As the founder of SoulTour, Tara has taught over 50,000 people how to stop hiding their light with her Self-Mastery Method toolkit which draws from neurobiology, depth psychology and spiritual law. Tara also wrote the authoritative book on transformational business and has been featured in Forbes, Harvard Business Review, and The New York Times. Business Insider called her the #1 woman Silicon Valley tech companies should add to their boards.

908: Brad Pedersen – 10 Business Lessons Learned from Timeless Toys
The Self-Employed Life
10/04/23 • 42 min
What could be more fun than being in the toy business, right? But, as we'll discover in this episode, this line of work isn't all fun and games. Today I'm joined by Brad Pedersen, who shares his remarkable journey from an expected career path in chiropractic care to an unexpected adventure in the world of toy making. Brad's story is one of resilience and reinvention, as he navigates the challenges of scaling a business too quickly, emphasizing the significance of strategic planning and timing. Self-employed business owners will find valuable insights in Brad's reflections on his journey and the importance of play.
Brad Pedersen is a serial entrepreneur with a remarkable journey that spans decades. A husband to Kelly for 27 years and a proud father of two, his entrepreneurial spirit ignited during his teens when he launched his first business venture. Brad initially pursued a career in healthcare but was captivated by a story about a young entrepreneur who successfully built a toy business, inspiring him to venture into the toy industry. He bootstraped his first toy company from a basement condo, propelling it to become one of Canada's largest toy companies in the early 2000s, earning accolades like the CYBF growth award, consecutive rankings among the Profit 100 companies, and an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year nomination. Brad's career includes founding Tech 4 Kids, which grew profitably, merging with The Bridge Direct to create Basic Fun with consolidated revenues of $150M. In 2017, he co-founded Pela, a socially responsible company striving to create a waste-free future by designing products that reduce waste's impact. Pela has gained recognition as a certified B-corp with an impressive record, including Jay-Z as an investor, ranking in Deloitte's Fast 50 for cleantech businesses in Canada, and crowdfunded campaigns like Lomi, which raised over $9M and became the most successful cleantech crowdfunded campaign ever. Brad's entrepreneurial journey has been shaped by both triumphs and adversities, and he continues to seek personal mastery and growth, driven by his faith, commitment to values, and passion for fitness and adventure.
