This episode of Pet Chat is just the ticket! We kick off with a game centered around my (Jason's) adorable dogs - Bunsen and Beaker, and then take you on a journey through the world of pets. Alongside, we extend the conversation to include our listeners' stories and answer their questions. There's also a surprising revelation as to why there was a recent dip in our content.
From there, we navigate the waters of climate change, focusing on the impact it has on El Niño, bringing you face-to-face with an issue that's affecting us all. Amidst the serious talk, we lighten the air with conversations about pet adventures - from Jamie's athletic dogs River and Rosie to the hilarious couch wars between our own four-legged pals. But that's not all; our episode also provides insights into the online world of pet lovers, from Twitter's recent changes to the benefits of joining an online dog community.
Finally, we delve into issues that hit close to home. Prepare to be shocked as we expose the deceptive world of sports supplements, revealing that only 11% of the 60 tested products contained an accurate amount of the ingredients listed on the label. With prohibited compounds lurking in 7 of these supplements, we question how these inaccuracies bypass the FDA's attention. But it's not all gloom and doom; we also dive into the commendable efforts made by organizations to ensure these supplements are accurately represented.
We also look at a study that mapped dog brains after hearing human and dog sounds. What do you think the findings were? You'll have to listen to find out!
Our guest for this episode is the dynamic Grant Steiner, a biochemistry PhD candidate at Loyola Chicago. His personal encounter with a cancer scare at 13 fostered his fascination with foundational sciences and their role in understanding the human body. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Grant’s current research on cyanobacteria, photosynthesis, and the Great Oxygenation Event offers intriguing insights into the planet’s history and future. We also touch on his studies on carbon capture as a climate change mitigation strategy and the critical role of Rubisco, the most abundant protein on Earth.
Adding a touch of warmth and humor, we slide into discussions about Grant's lifelong love for animals, starting with his beloved pet, Shelby. Discover how pet ownership can cultivate empathy for animals. We emphasize the importance of engaging young minds in STEM and environmentalism, and the significant role of voting in shaping these fields. And of course, no show can end without some laughter, so we wrap up with a light-hearted conversation about Annalise's donut-craving cats, Mouse and Larry. So, brace yourself for an exciting mix of science, pet tales, and environmental advocacies!

Again, thank you for the thoughts about our province and the wild fires. Our family is safe, yet we know many other families are displaced.
On The Science Pawdcast this week we have to talk to about the ground breaking research that found DNA could be pulled directly from the air! WHAT?
In Pet Science we look at dog memory and Jason talks about how he doesn't have memories from his young life because of a head injury.
Our guest in "Ask an Expert" is Hanna Marie, moving quickly to becoming Dr. Marie and you might recognize her voice as she was a guest in SciChat and we HAD to have her back to talk more about her research.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

As Bunsen and Beaker's account grew on social media (Twitter esp) I found it frustrating to get complex science breakdowns across, so the Pawdcast was made. It's been a joyful journey!

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

Our show will teach you and get you up to speed on a couple of science news items, one from the general world of science, and the other from the research that's going on with your pets. We also interview an amazing guest and they talk with passion about their area of science. We also humanize the scientists by talking about their hobbies and love for PETS too!

Which episode should someone start with?

Our show has podcast proper episodes which are labelled seasons and episode numbers. We also put our live audio show recordings on The Science Pawdcast as bonus episodes. Honestly, I'd listen to Scichat with Dr. Katie O'Rielly. It's not one of our main episodes but it gives you a good idea of how we interview scientists and how much fun the show is.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

Season 5 Episode 8 had a two really fun science stories and then we got to talk to an agriculture scientist who really humanized the work scientists do in agriculture. It's excellent.

Which episode are you most proud of?

We strive to promote guests who are underrepresented in their field OR catch students finishing their PHD. So many are now DOCTORS and it's so amazing to talk to them, hear their passion and then see what they have gone on to do.

What is your vision for your show?

We want to be one of the top science podcasts in the world. Our unique blend of humour, empathy, and education is something the whole family can enjoy.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

I adore The Skeptics Guide To The Galaxy and I honestly did pattern some of our early shows after it. Love those folks and what they do.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

Our dogs are named Bunsen and Beaker and Bunsen is a Berner so we love science puns.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm an award wining science educator and communicator. I have a day job (for now) in which I'm the science department head of my school and teach high school chemistry. I'm the dog dad of Bunsen and Beaker the science dogs on social media. Our Twitter account is one of the most engaged science communication accounts on the platform. It's very surreal!
