Know When to Hold 'em - Know When to Fold 'em
The Road to Seven
05/31/22 • 15 min
“You can’t just clock in and clock out when you’re doing your business. It’s always going to be a facet of your life and in your mind.”
- Shelagh Cummins
To borrow some words from Kenny Rogers, do you know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em when it comes to your programs... or your business as a whole?
During the pandemic, many people have had the chance to sit back and take stock of their work lives... and decide whether or not what they’re doing is really working for them. While a great number have decided to leave the workforce (hence the coining of the term “The Great Resignation”), some have also decided to close down their businesses and rejoin the 9-to-5 world.
What should you keep in mind when making this decision? What goes into closing your business down? More importantly — is it possible to make changes that offer you the balance you need WITHOUT giving up on entrepreneurship? If you’ve been on the fence about whether or not to shut down one of your offers (or your business as a whole), then this episode is for you!
In this episode of the Road to Seven podcast, you’ll discover:
- How to put your big business decisions in the proper perspective so that you can make your choice with a clear head
- How to create the freedom, flexibility, and profitability you need within your business
- How to determine whether you’re meant to be an entrepreneur after all — or if you’d ultimately be happier in the corporate world
Highlights:
00:01 Intro
02:28 Nothing is permanent
03:44 Making positive changes
06:11 Are you meant to be an entrepreneur?
07:26 The “BJ”
08:42 Empowered action

Sticking To Your Vision For Success with Nathalie Butterfield
The Road to Seven
09/21/21 • 30 min
“I think there’s something to be said for doing one thing... and doing it really well.”
- Nathalie Butterfield
If you’re looking for a way to skyrocket your sales past 7 figures in your product-based business, then this is the episode for you!
My guest is Nathalie Butterfield, co-founder of the ‘feel good,’ eco-friendly, Toronto-based bag company Fluf. A former lawyer, Nathalie traded in court cases for pillowcases in 2005, when she co-founded a high-end pillow boutique, eventually shifting the focus of the business to reusable lunch bags and backpacks.
Fluf was born in a retail store, but found its footing in wholesale and e-commerce. Since its humble beginnings, Fluf has grown to become a multiple-7-figure company!
In this conversation, Nathalie shares the challenges that she faced in growing her start-up, how she finds and vets warehouses and factories, and how she perseveres when things get hard.
In this episode of the Road to Seven podcast, you’ll discover:
- How Nathalie and her partner used strong PR to get the word out about their niche product
- How Fluf made the leap from retail to wholesale
- Their ingenious solution for saving on international shipping and duty costs
About Nathalie Butterfield: Nathalie Butterfield is the co-founder of Fluf, creator of organic cotton, machine-washable, sustainable, 'feel good' bags. Nathalie and co-founder Terra Kushner founded Fluf in 2005, originally as a pillow boutique. While selling pillows exclusively, they also carved out a mission to make them sustainably — which led them down the path of designing and printing their own fabrics, and then creating reusable bags and lunch bags.

The Leadership Gap in 6 Figure Women Entrepreneurs
The Road to Seven
08/01/23 • 13 min
“If you haven't hired people who are going to be key decision makers and have full autonomy over some functioning within your company, then you are never going to be able to let go of the reins and have this company be bigger than you.”
- Shelagh Cummins
Do you feel like you’re stuck on a hamster wheel in your business? Are you giving yourself dozens of reasons why you’re not ready to make crucial hiring decisions, and finding that it backfires on you more often than not? Then this is an episode for you.
I hear entrepreneurs tell me every day that they’re burnt out, or they’re afraid that they won’t have the time freedom they truly want in their business because they’re taking on too many clients, but they won’t take courageous action and make a strategic hire, or make that phone call, or launch that program, that would alleviate all of these fears.
But the reality is, with the right help in the right places, your business can generate more revenue and time freedom for you at the same time – you just have to be willing to lead yourself into letting go of control, and allow other people to come in and help.
In this episode of the Road to Seven podcast, you’ll discover:
- Why you might be stuck on the hamster wheel that is your business
- The reasons why you might not be hiring to grow your business even though you know you should
- The excuses we hear most often when it comes to “letting go” of responsibility in your business
Highlights:

05:58 What leading really means
07:11 Why you’re feeling so burnt out

The Path To Recovery is Through Healing
The Road to Seven
11/24/20 • 27 min
We all have our roles, whether it’s wisdom-sharer, or marcher, or healer. I was waiting for that healer part to be called forward. - Asha Frost
Are you rooted in the path you’re meant to be walking?
This episode features an interview with a very special and powerful guest, Asha Frost, an Ojibwe healer, spiritual mentor, and businesswoman.
A sensitive and empathic child growing up, Asha soon realized that she had the ability to engage in visionary practices, receiving messages from ancestors. “The healer path was printed in my soul,” she says. “But it took me my lifetime to awaken it through experience.”
Asha facilitates powerful healing journeys for her clients, helping them to move through past judgment, trauma, ancestral disconnection, mental disorders, and enables them to discover, explore, and celebrate their true purpose and power.
This is all the more important during our current period of discovery and uprising.
Effective allyship and action requires healing, on multiple levels.
For people with good intentions who aren’t used to activism and uplifting others, it can be a challenge to know how to best support others. “It’s so important to look at all the different ways that you can show up, and honouring those things,” Asha explains. “Because what I find people do is they go into freeze, because they think that they’re not doing enough. Or because if they read that they ‘should be doing it this way,’ then they disconnect from their own truth.”
Asha’s medicine is rooting in healing, and it’s important to heal not only ourselves, but our relationships with our global sisters and brothers.
This episode is a must-listen if:
- ...you wish to support and uplift others, but aren’t sure of the right way to go about it.
- ...you feel that you are somehow holding yourself back from what you’re meant to be doing.
- ...you’re ready to make powerful positive change.
In this episode, you’ll discover:
- The small but powerful ways you can support BIPOC-owned small businesses right now
- How to practice energetic, open-hearted listening
- Why authenticity and honouring your truth are key aspects of fully travelling your path
This interview was undertaken as part of an initiative that I created called Listen, Learn, Take Action: How to Build an Inclusive, Equitable and Antiracist Business.
About Asha Frost
Asha is an Ojibwe healer, spiritual mentor, and entrepreneur. She has worked as a Medicine Woman for almost 2 decades and has facilitated thousands of ceremonies through individual appointments, healing circles, retreats, and workshops.
Highlights:
- 00:50 Introduction to guest Asha Frost
- 03:39 Asha’s journey to becoming a healer
- 05:06 Owning her gifts & her own health
- 06:47 How to get your message/medicine out in the world
- 07:45 Is a healing journey right for you?

Why Your Gratitude Attitude Isn’t Working
The Road to Seven
12/22/20 • 12 min
Are you using gratitude the right way?
There are some major misconceptions out there about how we should experience gratitude.
Gratitude can be experienced in ways that can drive your business growth, but a lot of people approach gratitude in ways that can actually hinder growth, based on this misunderstanding.
It’s easy to compare our lives to the lives of people less fortunate and feel as though we should be grateful for what we have, and that wanting MORE would be greedy. Being too full of gratitude for the life that you have can stop you from acting on your hunger for more.
Many of us question whether wanting more is in alignment with living in gratitude for what we have.
In this way, gratitude can act as a cage instead of a path.
Please remember that wanting more isn’t greedy and that you shouldn’t feel guilty about it.
We can live in gratitude AND still want more. And work toward it.
In fact, working toward more can be an act of generosity, as having more for ourselves can create a positive snowball effect for our family and the people that we work with.
Identity what MORE looks like for you, and your path will start to show itself.
In this episode of the Road to Seven podcast, you’ll discover:
- The #1 misconception that people have about gratitude
- How to use gratitude to fuel your business... instead of letting it hold you back
- Why gratitude isn’t incompatible with wanting MORE — and the amazing snowball effect that having more will have on those around you
“Growth isn’t always more ... growth can mean different things for different people. It might mean fine-tuning a system, or status quo but liberating more time, or keeping your business running at the same level but having a higher profit margin.”
— Shelagh Cummins

- 01:40 Are you using gratitude in the wrong way?

Connecting To Your Deeper Wisdom
The Road to Seven
02/23/21 • 23 min
A former wildlife biologist, Carla Wainwright now helps women connect with the divine feminine.
Carla believes that the wisdom we tap into when reconnected with our bodies and the divine feminine can guide us in running our businesses, navigating our relationships, and raising our children.
“When we recognize that the body has this wisdom that we can listen to, this really then begins to radically shift how we operate in the world,” Carla explains. “Because we are able to connect to the deeper ‘felt-sense’ — that inner knowing.”
Leveraging this connection helps us as entrepreneurs, as we will operate from a place of deep inner knowing, rather than just letting our egos make guesses... and hoping for the best!
Carla herself made an unlikely decision based on this wisdom. The day after deciding to make the leap from biologist to bodyworker, she received an offer for a government job — one that just a year earlier would have been a dream job!
But Carla knew that it wasn’t what she needed to do. She turned it down and now runs a successful business that she finds extraordinarily fulfilling!
In this episode of the Road to Seven podcast, you’ll discover:
- How Carla reclaimed her power after two traumatic events — and why this lead to a transformation
- Steps that you can take today to begin reconnecting to your divine self
- How to tell the difference between your instinct and the story you tell yourself
About Carla Wainwright
Carla runs a yoga studio in B.C. and heads a global movement called Embracing Shakti. She is a breathworker, an earth priestess, and a healer. For more than 25 years, Carla has been in service to women on the path of embodiment.
