The Road to Seven - Know When to Hold 'em - Know When to Fold 'em

05/31/22 • 15 min

“You can’t just clock in and clock out when you’re doing your business. It’s always going to be a facet of your life and in your mind.”

- Shelagh Cummins

To borrow some words from Kenny Rogers, do you know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em when it comes to your programs... or your business as a whole?

During the pandemic, many people have had the chance to sit back and take stock of their work lives... and decide whether or not what they’re doing is really working for them. While a great number have decided to leave the workforce (hence the coining of the term “The Great Resignation”), some have also decided to close down their businesses and rejoin the 9-to-5 world.

What should you keep in mind when making this decision? What goes into closing your business down? More importantly — is it possible to make changes that offer you the balance you need WITHOUT giving up on entrepreneurship? If you’ve been on the fence about whether or not to shut down one of your offers (or your business as a whole), then this episode is for you!

In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode of the Road to Seven podcast,‌ ‌you’ll discover:‌ ‌

  • How to put your big business decisions in the proper perspective so that you can make your choice with a clear head
  • How to create the freedom, flexibility, and profitability you need within your business
  • How to determine whether you’re meant to be an entrepreneur after all — or if you’d ultimately be happier in the corporate world

Highlights:‌ ‌

02:28 Nothing is permanent

03:44 Making positive changes

06:11 Are you meant to be an entrepreneur?

07:26 The “BJ”

“I think there’s something to be said for doing one thing... and doing it really well.”

- Nathalie Butterfield

If you’re looking for a way to skyrocket your sales past 7 figures in your product-based business, then this is the episode for you!

My guest is Nathalie Butterfield, co-founder of the ‘feel good,’ eco-friendly, Toronto-based bag company Fluf. A former lawyer, Nathalie traded in court cases for pillowcases in 2005, when she co-founded a high-end pillow boutique, eventually shifting the focus of the business to reusable lunch bags and backpacks.

Fluf was born in a retail store, but found its footing in wholesale and e-commerce. Since its humble beginnings, Fluf has grown to become a multiple-7-figure company!

In this conversation, Nathalie shares the challenges that she faced in growing her start-up, how she finds and vets warehouses and factories, and how she perseveres when things get hard.

In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode of the Road to Seven podcast,‌ ‌you’ll discover:‌

  • How Nathalie and her partner used strong PR to get the word out about their niche product
  • How Fluf made the leap from retail to wholesale
  • Their ingenious solution for saving on international shipping and duty costs

About Nathalie Butterfield: Nathalie Butterfield is the co-founder of Fluf, creator of organic cotton, machine-washable, sustainable, 'feel good' bags. Nathalie and co-founder Terra Kushner founded Fluf in 2005, originally as a pillow boutique. While selling pillows exclusively, they also carved out a mission to make them sustainably — which led them down the path of designing and printing their own fabrics, and then creating reusable bags and lunch bags.

The Road to Seven - The Leadership Gap in 6 Figure Women Entrepreneurs
play

08/01/23 • 13 min

“If you haven't hired people who are going to be key decision makers and have full autonomy over some functioning within your company, then you are never going to be able to let go of the reins and have this company be bigger than you.”

- Shelagh Cummins

Do you feel like you’re stuck on a hamster wheel in your business? Are you giving yourself dozens of reasons why you’re not ready to make crucial hiring decisions, and finding that it backfires on you more often than not? Then this is an episode for you.

I hear entrepreneurs tell me every day that they’re burnt out, or they’re afraid that they won’t have the time freedom they truly want in their business because they’re taking on too many clients, but they won’t take courageous action and make a strategic hire, or make that phone call, or launch that program, that would alleviate all of these fears.

But the reality is, with the right help in the right places, your business can generate more revenue and time freedom for you at the same time – you just have to be willing to lead yourself into letting go of control, and allow other people to come in and help.

In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode of the Road to Seven podcast,‌ ‌you’ll discover:‌ ‌

  • Why you might be stuck on the hamster wheel that is your business
  • The reasons why you might not be hiring to grow your business even though you know you should
  • The excuses we hear most often when it comes to “letting go” of responsibility in your business

Highlights:‌ ‌

00:01 Intro

05:58 What leading really means

07:11 Why you’re feeling so burnt out

The Road to Seven - The Path To Recovery is Through Healing
play

11/24/20 • 27 min

We all have our roles, whether it’s wisdom-sharer, or marcher, or healer. I was waiting for that healer part to be called forward. - Asha Frost

Are you rooted in the path you’re meant to be walking?

This episode features an interview with a very special and powerful guest, Asha Frost, an Ojibwe healer, spiritual mentor, and businesswoman.

A sensitive and empathic child growing up, Asha soon realized that she had the ability to engage in visionary practices, receiving messages from ancestors. “The healer path was printed in my soul,” she says. “But it took me my lifetime to awaken it through experience.”

Asha facilitates powerful healing journeys for her clients, helping them to move through past judgment, trauma, ancestral disconnection, mental disorders, and enables them to discover, explore, and celebrate their true purpose and power.

This is all the more important during our current period of discovery and uprising.

Effective allyship and action requires healing, on multiple levels.

For people with good intentions who aren’t used to activism and uplifting others, it can be a challenge to know how to best support others. “It’s so important to look at all the different ways that you can show up, and honouring those things,” Asha explains. “Because what I find people do is they go into freeze, because they think that they’re not doing enough. Or because if they read that they ‘should be doing it this way,’ then they disconnect from their own truth.”

Asha’s medicine is rooting in healing, and it’s important to heal not only ourselves, but our relationships with our global sisters and brothers.

This episode is a must-listen if:

  • ...you wish to support and uplift others, but aren’t sure of the right way to go about it.
  • ...you feel that you are somehow holding yourself back from what you’re meant to be doing.
  • ...you’re ready to make powerful positive change.

In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode,‌ ‌you’ll discover:‌

  • The small but powerful ways you can support BIPOC-owned small businesses right now
  • How to practice energetic, open-hearted listening
  • Why authenticity and honouring your truth are key aspects of fully travelling your path

This interview was undertaken as part of an initiative that I created called Listen, Learn, Take Action: How to Build an Inclusive, Equitable and Antiracist Business.

About Asha Frost

Asha is an Ojibwe healer, spiritual mentor, and entrepreneur. She has worked as a Medicine Woman for almost 2 decades and has facilitated thousands of ceremonies through individual appointments, healing circles, retreats, and workshops.

Highlights:‌

  • 00:50 Introduction to guest Asha Frost
  • 03:39 Asha’s journey to becoming a healer
  • 05:06 Owning her gifts & her own health
  • 06:47 How to get your message/medicine out in the world

The Road to Seven - Why Women Are Held Back From Leadership
play

04/13/21 • 34 min

I hope you’re ready for a spicy episode today! This week’s topic is gender equity in the workplace.

My guest is Paul Harrietha, co-author of the excellent book ‘The Invisible Rules: What’s Really Holding Women Back in Business—and How to Fix It’, which is based on the personal insights of 50 senior female executives, including some high-profile Canadian business leaders.

Paul’s wife is a senior executive at a large corporation, and Paul became interested in gender equity after realizing that she and her colleagues faced unique challenges and setbacks when climbing the corporate ladder... while their less experienced male peers received promotions into senior leadership positions.

This prompted Paul to do some soul-searching and identify some of his own hidden biases.

While Paul’s expertise is on gender equity in the corporate world, there are a shocking number of parallels to gender equity in entrepreneurship.

In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode of the Road to Seven podcast,‌ ‌you’ll discover:‌ ‌

  • Why so many women leave the corporate world and choose entrepreneurship
  • The 4 consistent biases that are debilitating for aspiring female leaders
  • The 3 main factors that stifle women’s advancement opportunities and wage increases

About Paul Harrietha
Paul Harrietha is a consultant, business owner, and senior executive specializing in leadership, change management, and member engagement. He co-authored ‘The Invisible Rules: What’s Really Holding Women Back in Business—and How to Fix It’. Paul retired from the corporate world in 2020 to focus on writing, teaching, and mentorship.

The Road to Seven - The Hidden Microcosm of Women Entrepreneurs
play

04/06/21 • 20 min

Women entrepreneurs are absolutely vital to the global economy... and there are more of us than ever.

We are starting businesses at a faster rate than men.

The Road to Seven is dedicated to removing barriers to business growth for women entrepreneurs of all ages, races, sexual orientations, religions, and creeds.

Our clients have a common goal: to build a profitable business that fuels their dream lifestyle and creates financial security for themselves or their families.

But their businesses also help the wider community.

Women predominantly create service-based businesses that support other people — this includes coaching, consulting, and freelancing.

They also predominantly create smaller businesses. 97% of women entrepreneurs remain under $1 million in revenue.

These micro-businesses are often dismissed as side hustles, hobbies, or cottage industries — but they form a microcosm of women entrepreneurs making a tremendous impact on their families and communities.

But their impact doesn’t end there.

Micro-businesses, while overlooked by lenders, play a huge role in our economy!

Unfortunately, they’re also the least financed and the first hit by economic downturn.

Traditional investors avoid them because micro-businesses are too small for them to own a portion of and are unlikely to scale into multimillion-dollar companies.

But there is another way.

In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode of the Road to Seven podcast,‌ ‌you’ll discover:‌ ‌

  • How we can best invest in women-led microbusinesses in order to maximize their positive impacts
  • How the Capital Access Program will support women-led businesses — and what you need to know
  • What investment in women entrepreneurs really means — and its trickle-down effects

Highlights:‌ ‌

  • 02:52 The Road to Seven mission
  • 03:57 Small & micro-businesses
  • 06:36 Investing in microbusiness
  • 08:48 The Capital Access Program
  • 12:11 Investing in women
  • 16:23 Sexism in business

The Road to Seven - How To Make Sales In Your Sleep
play

03/23/21 • 29 min

“I didn’t have a lot of clients, so I set aside two weeks and created a six-week course... That was my first launch. I had like 4 people...and then I had 8... then it was 20.”

— Danielle Binns

Danielle Binns has achieved the entrepreneur’s dream — a business that lands her sales while she sleeps.

As a nutritionist and picky eating expert, she helps families push through mealtime frustrations.

It’s a niche she fell into accidentally, after attempting to launch a business supporting new mothers in a more general way.

When a brief story about her daughter’s pickiness resonated with her audience, Danielle niched down into picky eating consulting, which was exactly the right move for her business.

Her first lead magnet? A list of high-calorie foods for underweight kids.

Her unusual approach of focusing on “how to eat” in addition to “what to eat” helped establish her as a leader in her field and attracted an audience eager for her expertise, which she supplies via a set of low-ticket digital products.

“I do wake up in the morning and I see sales in my inbox, every single day,” Danielle explains. “Using Facebook ads is the way that happens for me. And it ebbs and flows — sometimes my ROI is really strong, and sometimes it’s not so strong. But ultimately I’m always building my list.”

In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode of the Road to Seven podcast,‌ ‌you’ll discover:‌ ‌

  • How Danielle’s business model evolved from one-on-one consulting to fully online
  • The marketing & advertising secrets she used to build a massive global audience
  • How to optimize your lead generator & sales funnel processes

About Danielle Binns
Danielle Binns is a wellness consultant, nutritionist, and expert on picky eating. She’s transformed the lives of families around the world through private coaching, online programs, and her game-changing Curious Cookie placemat.
