The Reach Your Peak Experience (A Sports Nutrition Podcast) - #180: Fries and Depression/Anxiety - Is there a link or is it food fearmongering gone wrong?

#180: Fries and Depression/Anxiety - Is there a link or is it food fearmongering gone wrong?

The Reach Your Peak Experience (A Sports Nutrition Podcast)

Could it be that the humble potatoes' most popular form is linked to poor mental health outcomes?
In recent months there have emerged some new claims about fries that would make a potato lover and flexible dieter feel disappointed. New research has claimed that fries have been linked to an increased risk of depression and anxiety in consumers.

How true is this though?
Are fries a food to avoid?
How do these claims hold up to logic and scrutiny?

I wanted to explore this further and separate fact from myth so that I can tell you the truth behind the tasty fry!

So are fries actually bad for mental health or do we need to look at this from a different angle and consider the bigger picture?

In this episode, I discuss:

  • French fries/hot chips = depression? (exploring the claims)
  • Deciphering the facts (do fries have a negative impact on mental health despite bringing joy eating them?)
  • Are fries truly linked to depression and anxiety in dieters? (answering the question from a Dietitian’s perspective)

Hope you enjoy!
