I grew up the grandchild of Holocaust survivors. My grandparents fled Europe and came to the United States with nothing, and their experiences understandably left them with concerns about money and scarcity. Some of this rubbed off on me, along with my own experiences growing up around people who had far more money than I did (not that I wanted for anything). And as a result, I ended up with my own set of issues around money. Today’s episode is a bit of a departure for me, since I rarely focus on money, but that’s what we’re diving into today.

Join me as I talk all about:

  • Power leaks around money
  • Conscious women with money are going to save this world
  • Why I want more money... And what is YOUR secret desire for money?
  • Our own money stories
  • Changing “I can’t” statements to...
  • The intersection of science and The Law of Attraction
  • The six steps to changing your relationship with money

You ever have that feeling that you should be happier than you are? Maybe you think that in general, things are going pretty OK in your life, and for sure a lot of people have it worse than you do, and yet you feel like you should be happier? You wonder what’s wrong with you? I’ll out myself and say that yes, I’ve been there many times in my life. If this at all resonates for you, then I’ve got the best guest for you! Today I’m sitting down with Dominique Velasquez to talk about:

  • The guilt that comes from feeling that you have no good reason to be anxious or unhappy
  • The search for external validation
  • Her struggles with opioids
  • Her amazing recovery (and how my podcast helped!!! – I am so grateful to know this!!!)
  • Her key understanding that the problem is not the circumstance in which we find ourselves, it’s... (you’ll have to listen to hear the rest!)
  • The devastating effect of shame
  • How the tools that Dominique has developed help other women to feel fulfilled and whole inside
  • Dominique’s PIVOTT program

About Dominique Velasquez

I spent my life trying to prove my worth by achieving things. However, there was no achievement big enough to fill the hole I had in my heart. I kept feeling empty like something was missing, and I just could not figure out why. I’d smile and put on a happy face to the world, but internally I was dying. In 2010 I got diagnosed with endometriosis, & quickly found myself fully addicted to opiates in desperation to numb the pain. At that time in my life, I looked to have it all, but I felt empty & unfulfilled! Constantly thinking “What is wrong with me?” I was dripping in shame from living a double life, pretending to be fine. The shame of being found out stopped me from seeking the treatment that I desperately wanted. I truly believed that my worth came from outside of me. Then I discovered self-development, and my life took a 180-degree pivot. I quickly learned that everything I needed was inside me and that I am the creator of my life. My purpose is to guide women in discovering that everything they need is inside them.

Ever feel like you have no time? No time to pursue a dream, no time to meditate, no time to even clean your house or shower? Me too. I am a busy mama and entrepreneur. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a good busy. It’s a busy I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. But damn, finding the time to do anything – like this podcast episode, for example – is really hard. But I did it – I brag.

Truth be told, I’ve had a lot of anxiety recently around getting it all done without compromising on anything. It feels like when I’m spending time with my son, Shay I should be writing newsletter copy and when I’m making a social media post I should be snuggling with Josh and when I’m finally making time for myself I should be literally anywhere else.

Of course, these shoulds don’t help, so I’m throwing them out. Ever since becoming a mom, I’ve had to learn how to spend my time – and my energy. I’m so not perfect at it, but in this episode, I share the tools I’m learning to make my precious time work for me.

Your time is precious, too. In this mini - episode, I talk all about:

  • The 4 Keys to Managing Time Well.
  • How to prioritize and make peace with what doesn’t get done.
  • How to take imperfect action
  • Time Suckers and how to avoid them.
  • How you can find grace for yourself and a big, virtual hug from me, to me, and to you.

Today, instead of beating myself up for all the things I haven’t done, I’m clear on priorities and taking imperfect action, and it feels so good. I’m also finding some extra space and love for myself because if I push myself too far, there will be no business, baby, hubby, friends, amazing life, or ME to love.

Enjoy this short-time-supporting episode!

XO,

Carin

Happiest Thanksgiving, my love. This week’s episode is all about one of my very favorite things: Gratitude. 2020 has been hard, but it’s taught all of us what’s important. My gratitude list is long this year – longer than it has been ever before.

So in this episode, I share My Grateful 8 (okay, it’s a lot more than just 8, but what can I say, I celebrate that I’m good at being grateful!), I provide you with the science on why gratitude is so good for us (and the lasting effects of it on our overall happiness), plus I share gratitude tools and games you can play right now to improve relationships and your life.

No matter who is around your Thanksgiving table this year – or if Thanksgiving is even a happy holiday at all in your home – we can all choose gratitude in our lives every day. I would love to hear about your Grateful 8, so please share that with me if you wish to.

In this episode I share:

  • The people and things I’m most grateful for this year
  • Personal stories that contributed to my deep gratitude
  • The science of gratitude and how it has lasting impacts on your life
  • Gratitude games you can play around the Thanksgiving table – even from a distance!

Happy Pride Month, PurposeGirls! To all of you who are out, questioning, and/or closeted, I’m proud of you, and I love you! While many queer people wear their identity with pride, many of us also have had challenging or traumatic experiences connected with our queerness.

Today’s guest on the PurposeGirl Podcast is no stranger to the complicated and the incredibly beautiful sides of being queer. Suzanne Falter is an author and podcaster who helps busy women find happiness through self-care. After losing her 22-year-old daughter, Teal, in 2012, Suzanne’s work has evolved to help busy women learn more about self-care– a lesson she learned in her grief.

And she helps women all over the world actually find the time for self-care, even when it seems impossible. Talk about a Goddess on Purpose, right?

In today’s episode, Suzanne and I talk about:

  • Suzanne’s personal coming out story, and her mindset around the process of sharing her truth with her family.
  • My bisexuality, and how a painful and abusive experience I had with my first love – a woman – has led me to doing this intimate healing work.
  • Suzanne’s writing, examples of her favorite lesbian characters she’s dreamed up, and how she finds inspiration from her own life for her writing.
  • The tragic and sudden death of Suzanne’s 22-year-old daughter, Teal, and the impact that Teal’s passing has had on Suzanne’s life – including about the letter Teal wrote her 6 months before she died.
  • How my husband, Josh, helped me to feel safe enough to really explore and accept my sexuality.
  • Suzanne’s mission and gift for the world.
  • The message of pride: being who you ARE.

What are you truly, deeply passionate about? Some of us have ready answers to this, but others have suppressed their desires, have buried them away because they’ve been taught that one’s passions aren’t nearly as important as other things, like having a successful career. Many people believe that once they’re very successful, once they amass wealth, they’ll be happy. But more than 100 research studies prove conclusively that the opposite is true: When we are happy, we are more successful! When we follow our passions and do those things that nourish us and make us happy, it carries over to other aspects of our lives, including our work life.

When I was in college I was passionate about two very different things: event planning and creative writing. But my idea of event planning was mocked, and I was told that writers don’t make any money. And so I put those passions away. I hear similar stories from so many of my clients who, when they were little girls, were told that their passions were foolish or wrong. And when this happens, our brains bury these passions and tries to forget them. This is a defense mechanism, and I explain the evolutionary biology reasons for this.

Bob Vallerand, the premier researcher on passion, defines passion as a strong inclination towards an activity that people like, that people find important, and in which they invest their time and their energy. I expand that definition to “activity or cause.” He says that passions become a self-defining activity. So, you don’t just run, you’re a runner.

I walk you through a few exercises to help you remember your passions, which you most likely knew when you were little, before you buried them away.

Next I define purpose and explain how passion and purpose are so closely connected. Passions help us understand our purpose. Purpose is the active, unique impact you make on the world. You may have many passions. Your purpose often is in enacting that, being that, being your full self.

Mihaly Csikszentmihaly defines flow as when you are so engaged in an activity that you lose track of time, you’re “in the zone.” When we’re passionate about something we go into flow, we’re willing to give up our precious free time for it. Hopefully, as you listen to this episode, you’re getting more clear on your own passions.

I talk about some of my own passions, which were evident even when I was a young girl, and how I’ve incorporated them into my purpose, into my actions. People who live their passions harmoniously are happier, healthier, and more successful overall.

To help you with your passions, I leave you with Purpose Power Tips.

When I created The Women’s Day Event for International Women’s Day in March 2021, I knew I wanted to give back, I knew I wanted to raise money for a community organization that supports girls leadership, and I was thrilled to find The Power of Girlhood, a leadership development organization serving adolescent girls in metro Detroit. And then I met its founder and was just blown away by this amazing human, Ber-Henda Williams. In today’s episode, I am joined by Ber-Henda, and she talks about
  • Her inspiration in creating The Power of Girlhood
  • Some of the ways in which The Power of Girlhood impacts girls, and the amazing girls she works with
  • The importance of giving back to the next generation
  • Being a multipotentialite
  • Co-creating in the feminine, as opposed to going it alone
  • Teaching women to listen to their intuition
  • Writing poetry for the United Way and Toyota
  • And so much more!

And I am honored to share this with you to kick off Black History Month here in the US, to elevate an African American woman whom I truly love and admire.

About Ber-Henda:

Ber-Henda is a Visionary+Empath Coach.
