Music of the Plants in Making Medicine with Susan Bowers
12/02/21 • 25 min
#005 - Have you ever heard of the Music of the Plants?
Join us for an intriguing conversation with herbalist Susan Bowers about her experience in making medicine with the Music of the Plants, a device first developed at Damanhur in the 1970’s and designed to translate the electromagnetic impulses of plants into melodies.
Susan is an herbalist and activist who lives her life in service to the plants and the Earth. She’s been practicing Herbal Plant Medicine for over 45 years. Her Grandmothers are Juanita, Marietta and Ruth, and she lives on the Port Gamble S’klallam tribal ancestral lands.
In this interview, Susan shares deep wisdom about what it means to be in right relationship with the plants. Here are some gems from her experience:
“Being in right relationship with plants, with the entire ecosystem of my garden and the wild places I forage means recognizing that all life is Sacred and Sentient. All life is interconnected.
My traditions have taught me that I must first sit with my plants and seeds in quiet. I then ask permission and give offerings, and listen to their reply. I explain what my intention is and who will receive help from the food and medicine they provide. I give gratitude to them for collaborating with me.
When making medicine this year I've been playing plant music with the Bamboo M, a Music of the Plants device. This adds another layer of healing to the medicine and food.
I feel more connected to the medicine because the music takes me out of my head and into my heart. That is key, being in your heart when you are working with the plant people. And they are happy to serve us if we acknowledge them and get permission.
The reciprocity between us is felt on a new level with the music. Science is now explaining what the ancient cultures knew. We are in this together, and a new paradigm has arisen and the healing of us all is happening now.”

#004 - An incredible conversation with folk herbalist and alchemical experience facilitator Alissa Maya of Akasha Apothecary on connecting with plant allies, plant wisdom; and how we can be better in alignment with the Earth, her cycles, and the cycles reflected in the feminine body.
There is so much deep juicy nourishment in this conversation with Alissa, and her connection with the plants is so powerful. We first recorded this for the Plant Spirit Herbalism Summit, and it was such a gem of a discussion that I wanted to share it with you here.
Alissa Maya (she/her) facilitates alchemical experiences with plant spirits & the feminine, and supports people in deepening their relationship with the elements through ceremony. With folk herbalist methods, she works with ritual and deep connection to nature and her cycles to create potent herbal offerings. She always offers herbs back to the earth with prayers of gratitude for the infinite wisdom they bring. Offering a synergy of plants, somatic modalities, movement, and ceremony, she teaches people how to come back to true self.
