When figuring out what first responder career is right for you, many new students get stuck on whether to become a firefighter or a paramedic on the ambulance service. Some start their career by being on a volunteer fire department while others try to volunteer at their local ambulance corps.
Which ever path you want to take the first step I recommend to everyone is your EMT class, that gives you a foot in the door in both professions, then based on your experiences, where you want to live, and the options presented to you, you can make a decision on the fire department or stick with EMS completely.
I discuss in this video the main differences between working as a firefighter and working as a paramedic, my aim is that this video puts you on the right path. One key note, if you are brand new is that aiming for your Paramedic certification in some fire departments, this alone can make you a stand out candidate to join.
For those of you that already possess fire certifications, gaining a EMS certification and going through EMT school or Paramedic school can help you a ton with getting hired.
Let me know in the comments, what your goals are whether it is the fire service or the ambulance service and what you are doing currently, would love to hear your stories!

Paramedic school is commonly the second school that an EMS provider will attend. Most people will enter EMS as an EMT, start working or volunteering their time, then set their sights on Paramedic school.
Becoming a paramedic can open the door to more job opportunities and possible placement in area fire departments.
I sat down and jotted down the 5 things that I tell every new paramedic student and every EMT who is thinking about joining a local paramedic college or university.
My hope is that every EMT who has either just started paramedic school or those about to join takes the action steps laid out in this video, it will make the entire process so much easier.

In EMS education, we always go over the emergent situations and scenarios to make sure we ready when that 911 call comes in. But few EMS educators talk about the how to protect both the patient and yourself on "everyday calls."
In this video, I talk about patients who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and how to best assess them. What makes a great EMT or Paramedic is to always put yourself in the patient's shoes.
If you called 911, how would you want to be assessed, how would you like the EMT or Paramedic to speak with you about your care. After seeing hundreds of alcohol-related calls in the ambulance, I came up with my own "ETOH Assessment" that I now share with you.
This patient assessment skill that I teach you will not only be great for your documentation to cover yourself, but will also help the patient if something else is going on that is causing their altered mental status. Do this for every altered mental status call, and you can't go wrong.
