A New Way of Being

A New Way of Being

Simon Mundie

A New Way of Being is about banishing overwhelm and burnout and finding flow and true peace. The way most of us live is focused on 'arriving' at some point in the future, when everything will finally fall into place. But this is a trap. When we treat this moment, however it shows up, as just a stepping stone to a seemingly more important future moment, we miss the only place where life truly happens: the here and now. This way of living leads to overwhelm, burnout, and a nagging sense of lack - as if something is always missing. It keeps us from experiencing the flow, awe, and peace that naturally arise when we recognise: there is only this moment.

A New Way of Being - Bitesize: Identity and Values - Jamie Peacock
play

04/15/22 • 11 min

It's a fact that lots of sportspeople struggle with retirement. There was a BBC survey done a few years ago that found that around 50% of athletes have mental health difficulties when they stop playing their sport. Rugby League legend Jamie Peacock had a smooth transition out of playing rugby league – which he put down to two reasons. The first is about identity, and not confusing who you are with what you do, and the second key bit is around understanding what your values are – and living in accordance with them. Focusing on these two areas enabled Jamie to avoid the difficulties that many sportspeople face when they retire, and the words of wisdom Jamie shares on these two areas are really valuable for anyone – no matter your background or occupation.

Jamie is attempting to run 104 miles – the equivalent of four marathons – on Saturday to raise money for Greenhouse Sports, the charity who use sport to help disadvantaged young people: https://www.greenhousesports.org/

A huge thanks to my sponsors, Puresport. Their range of CBD and Nootropics supplements have had a significant impact on how I sleep, manage stress, and focus throughout the day. I can’t recommend them enough. I have many friends and family who have tried their huge range of products - and now swear by them. In fact - two friends and colleagues recently tried Puresport out to help with sleep issues and aches and pains - and they are both evangelical about their products!

CBD has been shown to have benefits for anxiety, inflammation, aches and pains - and it may even be good for long term brain and heart health. Puresport are paving the way in the natural wellness market with their unparalleled range of products. I am currently enjoying their Destress oil, with ashwaganda and the sunshine Vitamin D - ideal for this time of year. Plus, their unwind capsules - ideal for relaxing and deep sleep, and their muscle and joint balm. Basically - I'm like a kid in a sweetshop with Puresport.

The good news is that Life Lessons listeners can get 20% off all full prices products with code Life20 at checkout. Head to www.puresport.co to check out their fantastic extensive range and get your 20% discount. You won't be disappointed - their products really have been a game-changer for so many people.

A New Way of Being - Bitesize: Dealing with nerves - Michael Johnson
play

05/13/22 • 8 min

Whenever we step into a performance situation - whether it is giving a speech or presentation through to an Olympic final - it is normal to experience nerves. Many people try to bat such feelings away, or even believe they shouldn't be feeling that way, but if you can make space for those feelings - truly welcome and befriend them - then you can channel the power of adrenaline to help you. To illustrate this is Michael Johnson, the star of the 1996 Olympics in which he won 200 & 400 metres gold, decimating a world record in the process, and all while wearing golden running shoes.

A New Way of Being - Knowing yourself: Damon Hill
play

05/03/21 • 73 min

Resolving complicated feelings, recognising patterns and understanding yourself better – with the 1996 Formula One World Champion.

When Hill secured the Formula1 Championship in 1996, he ensured that he and his father Graham Hill entered the record books as the first father-and-son pair to win the sport’s biggest prize.

But sadly, his dad was not there to celebrate the achievement; he tragically died in a plane crash in 1975 shortly after retiring from the sport.

After his own retirement, Hill went on a journey of self-discovery, battling depression and questions of identity – as well as understanding and unpicking complicated feelings, and patterns that get passed down through the generations.

A New Way of Being - How to make every day a good day: Henry Fraser
play

04/19/22 • 62 min

Could the keys to making every day a good day basically come down to three things: acceptance, presence and gratitude? This week's guest says so. His name is Henry Fraser, a best-selling painter, best-selling author and highly in-demand public speaker. When he was seventeen years old – Henry’s life changed in a moment when he was paralysed from the shoulders down after breaking his neck diving into the sea in Portugal. In the weeks that followed, he nearly died several times - but Henry’s hardest moment actually came a few months after his accident when he first caught sight of his reflection. He experienced a profound breakdown, swiftly followed by a breakthrough that started the process of him becoming the man he is today.

Before his accident, despite being an academy rugby player for Saracens, Henry described himself as being quite fearful and anxiety prone – a glass half empty kind of guy – but he’s definitely not any more. The lessons Henry shares about the power of acceptance, presence and gratitude are so profound and simple to understand. These are the key skills any of us can develop to live a good and happy life, whatever the circumstances we find ourselves in

**A quick heads up - I am soon going to be having a short break from putting out full length episodes, probably after next week’s conversation

Basically I need to focus on finishing my book, so am going to be putting all my energy and focus on that for a short while. I will continue to be putting out bitseized episodes each week, and will be back soon. So – please do stay subscribed, and please do share this week’s episode!**

A New Way of Being - Developing a Growth Mindset: Tony Stanger
play

04/11/22 • 60 min

"People will remember how you made them feel, not what you said."

This week's conversation is with the man who scored the most famous try in Scottish rugby history – Tony Stanger. He touched the ball down to secure Scotland the Five Nations Grand Slam in 1990 against England. Since retiring – Tony spent 7 years developing talent through the Scottish institute of sport and now runs a company coaching people in business – using many of the lessons he has learnt from his life in sport.

The theme of this conversation is about developing a growth mindset, and we talk about the power language and carefully calibrated questions, not letting what other people say and believe limit your own potential, the importance of self-regulation, how to promote the 5 key growth mindset behaviours and much more besides. Tony has studied Carol Dweck’s work on fixed and growth mindsets and written his own book factoring in many of its findings for parents specifically called Red Dot parenting.

Do we really live in a fundamentally physical universe? Are we fundamentally physical beings?

Most of us feel there is a world of stuff out there – trees, cars, buildings, clouds. People believe we are born into this world in the form of a body, which has a brain and a mind in it. BUT what if I was to suggest that this isn’t actually an accurate picture of what’s really going on? If that is the case, then what really IS the nature of reality? And something to bear in mind, science can tell us how reality behaves, it can't tell us what it is.

Joining me for this episode is Bernardo Katsrup – who has two PhDs, one in computer science and another in philosophy. He was employed first at CERN, the European council for nuclear research, where he began working in artificial intelligence (AI) in connection with the Large Hadron Collider. Then he moved on to artificial consciousness (AC), wondering if he could build an artificially conscious entity, which piqued his interest in philosophy. Bernardo's books include Why Materialism Is Baloney.

Alongside Bernardo is philosopher Rupert Spira, a teacher of non-duality and what’s known as 'the direct path'. Rupert and Bernardo come at the nature of reality from two different perspectives but – they arrive at the same conclusion. Rupert's books include Being Aware of Being Aware.

The current widely accepted model of reality is called materialism or physicalism. But, most people accept materialism without really understanding what it means. In this episode, my guests explain materialism, point out its inconsistencies and incoherence, and provide a template of reality that does work. I would suggest this episode is one to listen to when you have time to concentrate on it.

Ed Jackson is a bloody inspiration. He was a professional rugby player before his career was cut short when he dived into a swimming pool and broke his neck. He nearly died and was told he would not walk again. But Ed worked his butt off and confounded the critics, going on to make a remarkable recovery - and has since developed something of a penchant for climbing mountains. And now, a movie has been made about his remarkable story, called The Mountain Within Me. It's currently in UK cinemas, and I can't recommend going to see it enough. This is a rerelease of the first conversation Ed and I had a few years ago, and I am chuffed that his epic story continues to develop in such impactful ways.

“Each session with Simon has been enjoyable and enlightening in equal measure.Through our conversations I have learnt a lot not only about non-duality and Simon’s use of his own experiences are really helpful in grasping the ideas behind it all. After each chat I really feel like my ‘cup has been filled" - Jack
