As I woke this morning, the aroma of my grandmother's signature lentil stew filled the air, at least in my memory. It is Dia de los Muertos—the day we honor our deceased loved ones by preparing their favorite meals. It got me thinking about the power of food, not only as a means of remembrance but also as a tool to impact our planet positively. I invite you to join me as we journey into the world of Kitchen Activism, where our meals become intentional acts of respect for our ancestors, our environment, and ourselves.
Beneath the surface of every bite are stories of how our food choices impact the world. As I reminisced about my grandmothers, I realized the best way to honor them is through food, but not at the expense of the environment. How can we align our culinary traditions with our values of protecting Mother Earth? The answer lies in cooking with purpose, shopping with intention, and supporting sustainable farming practices. Together, we can transform our kitchens into powerful platforms for environmental change while carrying forward the legacy of our loved ones. So here's to a feast of activism, purpose, and memory, one meal at a time!

EPISODE SUMMARY
Have you ever had days that were starting to feel or taste like a soup that was missing a crucial spice? This episode was inspired by my recent feelings of blandness that started to set in. This caused me to do an inventory of the seven ingredients that have come to be my guiding post for living. Upon reflection, it became clear that I was heavy on some and sporadic with others and it was impacting the flavor of my "life's soup."
This is what I know to be true for myself. My ability to bring about positive change through my activism in my own home kitchen and beyond is directly connected to my vitality which is directly related to the presence of the 7 essential ingredients (listed below) in my days.
You may find your list of ingredients is the same or similar to the one below. Or maybe you want to adopt this one as your own. Either way, as activists we need to clarify our essential ingredients so we can feel good to do good.
The 7 Ingredients for Good Living
1. Work with Purpose
2. Meditate
3. Connect with Nature
4. Move Your Body
5. Connect with People
6. Have Fun
7. Cook with Purpose

THE KITCHEN ACTIVIST - WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO REINSTATE THE SUNDAY DINNER
play

Send us a text

EPISODE SUMMARY
I have reinstated the Sunday dinner. What that simply means to me is it's a day when I make dinner more of a production. I think it's really important to have one day of the week set aside to make more elaborate dishes. These are the days that you make those recipes that you say, I'll make it when I have more time. These are the meals you set aside to make those more elaborate meals remembering that what is considered "elaborate" for one home cook is different for another.
So for me, elaborate is the day that we make lasagna or empanadas or homemade pasta.
When we carve out one time a week or month to gather for a special meal, we are building deeper relationships while at the same time growing well-being for the planet.
In this episode, I offer a few ideas to get you started to reinstitute the "Sunday" dinner, regardless of what day of the week or month it falls on.

  • 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year.

In this episode, I’m joined by Kathy King, Director of Climate Education and Leadership at the Community Environmental Council in Santa Barbara, California. She shares simple and doable tips to reduce our plastic starting today when we shop for food.

Episode Summary
September marks the beginning of Hispanic, LatinX Heritage Month. Each year Americans observe this time from September 15th to October 15th, to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestry comes from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

In this podcast episode, I celebrate the contributions of farm workers as 83% of farm workers in the United States are Latino. In California, where I was born and raised, the percentage is much higher. 92%.

I am so proud to have the endorsement of Dolores Huerta, the co-founder of the United Farmworkers union with Cesar Chavez printed on the cover of my book, Eat Less Water. She dedicated decades of her life to fighting for basic protections for farm workers.

But there's still much more work to do. The food we choose has the power to contribute, to clean and abundant water systems around the world. So much of the way food is grown and cultivated around this nation and the world causes harm, not only to the river as nearly half the rivers in the U.S are too polluted with nitrates to support aquatic life. But to the people who work to cultivate and harvest the food that makes its way into our refrigerators and pantries.

You and I may be able to wash off the residue of chemicals sprayed on our food but it can't be washed away when it is ingested by the farm worker that must work on the land.

My appreciation for the contribution and continued plight of farm workers is due in part to my father. He worked as a farm worker as a child. He took me to marches and actions to stand in solidarity with the United Farm Workers. I didn't eat grapes for most of my childhood because of the grape boycott. I invited my father onto this episode to share some of his stories with us as he inspires so much of the work I do.

In this episode, my pa shares his involvement in the upcoming performance of El Bracero A Mariachi Musical. Below find a link to purchase tickets. If you share the link to this episode with friends and family on social media tag me and enter to win two tickets for the September 17 performance in Oxnard, California, where my father will be on stage in all his resplendence.

THE KITCHEN ACTIVIST - EASY FIXES TO REDUCE FOOD LOSS IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR
play

Send us a text

Episode Summary
Imagine you just went shopping at the grocery store or farmer's market. You bought enough food to fill three shopping bags. You place the shopping bags in the grocery cart. You walk toward your car and on the way take one of those bags, the one that has the most perishable things, and throw it into the trash can.

This is not too far from the truth. The only thing that is off is the timing. Because what really occurs is we take that third grocery bag, unpack the contents into our refrigerator, forget about it until it's gone bad, then place it into the trash.

The average person throws away a third of their food. This total is based on the following statistic: 1/3 (1.3 billion tons) of food produced worldwide is lost or wasted.

The way it translates for the individual family of four is about $1,800 worth of food is thrown out. So in one decade, a family throws away $18,000 of food. It's easy for us to measure it in terms of $$ and tons. But we also throw out the water, soil, and energy with all that food.

When we talk about food waste, we have a tendency to think about it as food loss that happens someplace else, like at the farm, grocery store, restaurant, or schools. But as it turns out, 43% of all food waste happens in our kitchens. And specifically in our refrigerator.

I read somewhere that a refrigerator is a place where food goes to die. It is a sad way to put it, but it's not far from the truth.

Today and tomorrow mark the end of World Water Week. A great way to celebrate is in the refrigerator; starting with the implementation of systems designed to tackle food loss (remember those six slices of bread you just threw out are about 66 gallons of water).

In this latest podcast episode, I share some simple tips I implement in my refrigerator to reduce food waste.

THE KITCHEN ACTIVIST - THREE REASONS ORGANIC IS WORTH THE MONEY
play

EPISODE SUMMARY
Organic food is more expensive than its conventional counterpart most of the time. This especially the case for animal proteins like eggs, dairy, and meat. But it is it worth the extra $$? What are we really paying for when we reach for a third party certified organic labeled food like USDA Organic? And how can we know it is organic?
I answer these questions plus explain some of the following basics around organic guidelines:

  • What does the organic certification mean?
  • When is the third party organic certification important?
  • Is BUY LOCAL the same as organic?
  • Is the Organic Certified label needed at the farmers' market?

By the end of the episode you will have at least three reasons to support organic agriculture at the farmers' market and your neighborhood grocery store.

About Tess Taylor:
Tess Taylor lives in El Cerrito, California, where she raises artichokes on the sidewalk median strip, has four chickens in the backyard, and is working to restore a community orchard. Her work as a writer deals with place, ecology, memory, and cultural reckoning. She published five celebrated poetry collections: The Misremembered World, The Forage House, Last West: Roadsongs for Dorothea Lange, Work & Days, and Rift Zone. She has also been the on-air poetry reviewer for NPR’s All Things Considered for over a decade. Her work as a cultural critic appears in Harpers Magazine, The Atlantic, The Kenyon Review, Poetry, Tin House, The Times Literary Supplement, CNN, and The New York Times. She is currently at work on two plays, one of which is a stage adaptation of her book of poems about American photographer Dorothea Lange, and later this fall, she’ll release a podcast called Intimate Addresses, about six extraordinary twentieth-century artists letters, with Anna Deveare Smith, and Getty. Her latest work, Leaning Toward Light: Poems for Gardens and the Hands that Tend Them, is a collection of contemporary gardening poems, for an era of climate crisis, which includes poems by some of the most luminary poets writing today. The word anthology means “bouquet or gathering of flowers,” and this bouquet does gather many incredible offerings of poetry.
