The Kids' Code Podcast - 37. Cicada 3301: A Mysterious Puzzle Quest
play

07/08/24 • 25 min

In this episode, we discover the mystery of Cicada 3301. Cicada 3301 all started from a post on the message board 4chan, and led Cryptographers on a chase for about a month through some of the world's most complicated and interesting puzzles, until a few managed to get to the end. Then, it returned for two more years, finally with an encoded book that is, at the time of the release of this episode, unsolved. We're sorry, the song mentioned in the episode and supposedly played in the episode did not transfer, so you cannot hear it from us. In the story, Seth arrives to help- but he is different than what we thought. Finally, we share a couple other internet puzzle mysteries.
The Background music in this episode is by Bio Unit, RomanSenykMusic, fanchisanches, and Music Unlimited, and our theme is "Mosquito" by Caspar Babypants.

The Beale Papers was a pamphlet published in 1885, detailing a story that took place in the 1820s and 1840s about a man named Thomas J. Beale. After disappearing, the contents of a strongbox he left at a hotel were opened in 1845, revealing three pages of ciphertext and a letter explaining the ciphertext pages. It sparked a 175+ year long treasure hunt. This is one of Barnabas' favorite mysteries in Cryptography, and we already discussed some about it in episodes 5 and 11. In this episode, we round up this season with a story about a devious plot called Operation Mincemeat, some spies including a double agent, and of course, the season end things. Yes, we we have a clever ruse revolving around a man who never even existed. If you thought that this season has had boring history, we can tell you that we have made amends with these tales. The story also goes wild, and we solve the mystery of the The Evil Ant and The Secret Society and find their HQ, as well as (we hope) stopping the butterfly effect.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

Because I love codes and ciphers and want to share that love with other children!

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

I hope that listeners will enjoy it, and know far more about cryptography when they finish the show than when they start listening. I also would love it if I can improve listeners' codebreaking/decryption skills.

Which episode should someone start with?

Probably "13. Code or Cipher?" because that episode covers the basic terminology of cryptography - oh, by the way, cryptography or cryptology mean the world of codes, ciphers, and other secret messages.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

That's a hard question. Maybe "18. Stalking, Tracking, and Shadowing" - I love that episode because I was able to introduce listeners to the basic spy techniques, as well as the fact that I got to share some things I learned from old friends. However, "Bonus: The Kids' Code Podcast Roadtrip Edition" and "The Secret Society Ep. 3: A Discovery" are quite good too.

Which episode are you most proud of?

All of them! I can't really choose a single one. I do like "11. Book Code" a lot though.

What is your vision for your show?

That I can teach other kids about the amazing world of codes! And, also to reach at least season 8.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

Most likely The Past and The Curious by Mick Sullivan, but maybe The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian, created by Johnathon Messenger. If you're a kid who wants to start a podcast, I would recommend {Podcast Title Pending} by GZM Shows.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

Easy! A podcast for kids about codes - The Kids' Code Podcast! I came up with it the same day I had the idea to start the show.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm Barnabas, and I'm just a kid who loves codes and is a voice actor. You can read my bio for more about my interests.
