Your host, Arthur Yon, talks with the Owner of Tax Goddess Business Services, Shauna A. Wekherlien. Shauna's journey is as fascinating as it is inspiring. She began her career with a degree in astrophysics, but a personal incident involving her mother's IRS notice and the lack of proper advice on reducing her tax bill led Shauna to transition into tax strategy. This transition was not a mere switch; it was an educational journey that saw her become a CPA, a certified tax coach, and a certified tax strategist. Today, she ranks among the top three tax strategists in the country, helping clients achieve an average tax rate of 6% and legally minimize their taxes.

Shauna's approach to tax strategy is not about a single magic bullet but a combination of strategies that can bring the tax rate down. She shared practical examples like purchasing a truck for business purposes and the importance of using it more than 50% of the time for business to make it deductible. She also debunked myths about writing off everything related to marketing and advertising expenses and clarified that only certain work clothing, like polo shirts with company logos, are deductible.

With an impressive track record of saving businesses nearly $13 billion in taxes, Shauna emphasized the importance of starting tax planning early in the year to maximize deductions. She also shed light on the current situation with the IRS and its limited resources for auditing. Due to funding cuts, the IRS has been able to hire only 20,000 agents instead of the intended 87,000. This has led to a focus on individuals with a taxable income of one million or more, making it crucial for small businesses to keep their taxable income below this threshold or utilize legal tax strategies to lower their income.

The Home Service Small Business Spotlight - 51 - Contractors' Integrity: Rising Above Low Standards with Core Matters' Ryan Englin
play

01/10/24 • 28 min

Your host, Arthur Yon, talks with the CEO of Core Matters, Ryan Englin. Ryan's journey into the heart of the home service industry began with a mission to "make the trades cool again." He observed a societal shift that undervalued the importance of field technicians and construction workers. Ryan's goal is to restore the appeal and respect these professions deserve, countering the narrative that has led many to overlook the impact of these essential jobs.

Ryan highlighted that the home service industry's hiring practices have remained stagnant while the world around it has evolved. The industry must adapt and confront the misconceptions about trade professions to attract the workforce it needs.

To draw in exceptional talent, Ryan advises against belittling competitors. Instead, businesses should focus on promoting their positive attributes, fostering a strong company culture, and emphasizing a higher purpose beyond the paycheck. This approach not only attracts candidates but also builds a community within the company.

Your host, Arthur Yon, talks with the Founder of Celtic Mold Assessments, John Slater. Celtic Mold Assessments primarily provides mold inspections and assessments in accordance with New York state regulations. Before a mold remediation job can be done, an inspector like John needs to assess the scope of work and provide a report with protocols for the remediation company to follow. John recently obtained a license to conduct asbestos inspections, as New York state requires materials to be tested for asbestos before any removal can take place.

John's decision to become an inspector was driven by his experience working for a mold remediation company and witnessing poorly written reports from other inspectors. He emphasizes the importance of thorough inspections and well-written reports to hold contractors accountable and improve the industry's standards.

Your host, Arthur Yon, talks with the Marketing Staff of Cornerstone Marketing Solutions, Jonathan Bannister. Jonathan's journey is nothing short of inspiring. He started his career as a police officer in Biloxi, Mississippi. However, after having three kids in quick succession, his wife's concerns about his safety led him to consider a career change.

Jonathan had previous experience in sales, real estate, and the casino industry, where he worked his way up from a valet to a pit boss. But he soon realized that being a business owner was his true calling. He describes himself as a terrible employee due to his outspoken nature and desire for efficiency.

In 2014, Jonathan connected with a friend who was developing mobile apps and decided to join him in selling them. He targeted golf courses, offering them a free app that would allow them to send push notifications to golfers. However, during his sales pitches, he discovered that many business owners also needed help with their websites and SEO. Despite his limited knowledge of digital marketing, Jonathan agreed to assist them and quickly learned on the job.

In 2016, Jonathan officially founded Cornerstone Marketing Solutions and focused on serving the home service industry. With the majority of his clients already being in this space, he found his niche.
