The Hecht Yeah! Podcast

On today’s podcast I’ll discuss my approach to eliminating negativity and doubt. Especially if you’re in a high-pressure situation or getting some sort of new start, it’s important to tune out the people and circumstances which lead us to stop believing in ourselves. Sometimes we just run out of momentum but we can get it back. On this episode we’ll carefully examine 3 ways to redirect negative momentum in our life and reclaim a positive mindset.

For those of us starting something new, whether it’s a new business or a new job, this can come with some initial shock or pure excitement depending on the circumstances. If you haven’t already, check out Episode number 1. At some point we find our sweet spot and gather momentum. This is something which can fluctuate depending on how things are going but let’s be honest. We’re vulnerable.

Negativity can be very contagious and even a casual remark from a friend or relative about how they read online that entrepreneurship is actually on the decline in recent years because who wants to take a risk and not get company benefits and a ‘steady income’? ( U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

3 things I recommend doing to tune out negativity and reclaim your positive mindset

1. Distance yourself from people who believe things are impossible . Remember how contagious negativity can be. Limit exposure to those who don’t believe in the possibilities of growth and opportunities.

2. Find people who ignite your passion and positivity. Whether it’s a YouTube video, a friend, or mentor who can show you how to get back on-track, make good use of the positive influences you have in your life. If you’re an aspiring photographer who needs hands on tips and advice, search Instagram, Facebook, Meetup, or other websites that can put you in touch with a professional photographer who can help you on your journey to learning and growth.

3. Focus on what you’ve accomplished. Make a list of your weekly goals and reflect on what you’ve achieved and what you can do next week to push yourself in the right direction. Don’t expect perfection. That’s a sure-fire way to become discouraged. Take it one day at a time.

I hope you have a better idea of how to reclaim your positive mindset and remove negativity from your life in pursuit of your goals. Believe in the work you do and don’t every forget what you are capable of.

Your happy place doesn’t need to necessarily be perfect but it should be inspiring, engaging, promising, and fitting of you and your vision of the future.

3 things we can do to help us determine whether we are in our happy place or how to get there is:

1. Write down your goals – this should be segmented into 1 year, 5 year, and 10 year goals

2. Make a list of pros and cons about your current and potential location – be brutally honest and try to be as objective as you can be

3. Discuss with a friend who can aid in providing an objective opinion to help you see the situation as clearly as possible.

I hope you have a better idea of how to choose and arrive at your happy place. The decision you make today will affect your life for potentially years to come. Be wise, be thorough, and be honest with yourself in order to make the best possible decision for yourself.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 4 - Knowing When To Quit

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I doing this for me or just to satisfy others’ expectations of me?
  • Would quitting help me achieve my goals?
  • Am I compromising my character, my values, or my energy?

If your answers were that you’re just satisfying others, quitting your current job or situation would actually move you closer to your goals, and you find yourself wasting your energy and compromising on your values, it could be a good time to assess other options.

Some things to consider quitting are:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Excessive spending of money
  • A bad personal relationship or friendship
  • A job which does not move you closer to your goals

3 things to consider when figuring out if it’s time to quit your current situation are:

1. Consider the consequences of change. In the case of quitting a job, pay great consideration for the ramifications of your actions. Do you have enough money saved up to get you through the next 6 or so months for things like rent, bills, other obligations? If you’re already working on building your business but can’t quite secure enough time during your busy days due to a full time job, consider part time work as long as you have the means for health insurance.

2. If you’re at your breaking point, begin planning now. Whether it’s relationship, bad habit, or a bad fit at work, start making plans. Trust your instincts. If you are at the end of your rope now, the situation is likely not going to get any better. Consider your options and act accordingly.

3. Stop giving your precious energy to something which isn’t worth your time. If you’re drained at the end of the day and don’t have any energy left for yourself in order to engage in things that make you happy and fulfilled, it’s time to have a direct conversation. If at work you’re working a dual role for instance, be honest with your supervisor(s) about your abilities. If working more than 12-13 hours, 5 days a week, you’re likely not only missing out on opportunities to execute on your dreams, you’re likely missing out on precious time with friends and family, that of which you will never get back. Be strong.
