The Harbour - Proverbs: The Heart of Wisdom
play

01/26/25 • 33 min

This morning, Sarah Lyew wraps up our study of the book of Proverbs with a bit of a bird's-eye view of what it means to guard our hearts and grow in wisdom. Please note two things: we were using a different microphone this morning so if you detect a bit of a tinny ring, it's just you, it's on the recording. We'll work to sort that out in the future. Secondly, there were two video clips shown during the sermon. Links to each video can be found immediately below and I (Will) have interjected myself into the recordings with instructions about when to access them.
Video Clip #1: Rise of the Guardians
Video Clip #2: The Bible Project
(If you'd like to see more from The Bible Project, click here.)
Please find the slide deck for this week's teaching here.
Home Church Questions:
1. What is your comfort movie?
2. What would you say your core is?
3. Read Proverbs 4:20-27. What stood out to you from this passage?
4. How does understanding the Old Testament definition of "heart" impact how you read this?
5. What does 'guarding your heart' look like?
6. Read Proverbs 31:10-31. What stood out to you from this passage?
7. If you were to grab coffee with the Proverbs 31 woman, what do you think she would be like? How would you describe her? Sarah suggested she would look like Jesus. What do you think of that?
8. How does having Jesus as your core change who you are?
9. Are there areas in your life where you need to realign with guarding your heart?
10. If Jesus is more concerned with who are we than what we do, how does that impact how we live?
11. Pray with and for one another.

The Harbour - Advent 1: Elizabeth
play

12/01/24 • 28 min

Today, Sarah Lyew helps us start the Advent season by sharing about the hope in the disappointment found in the story of Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist. Please excuse the brief moment at 19:38 where the mic cuts out. Don't panic! Sarah returns 10 seconds later.
Please find the slide deck for this week's teaching here.
Home Church Questions:
1. What’s the most disappointing meal or trip you’ve had?
2. What stood out to you from Sunday's teaching?
3. Read Luke 1:5-28, 24-25, 39-45. What stands out to you from this passage?
4. Can you identify other stories from the Bible that are similar to this story?
5. Reread verse 6 (if possible, in a few different translations). What do you think Elizabeth was like to sit down with?
6. Often barrenness carried a lot of shame with it, especially for the woman. How do you think this may have affected how people saw her? How she saw herself?
7. How could not only becoming pregnant but becoming pregnant in a way similar to stories like Sarah's and Hannah's have impacted Elizabeth?
8. Have you had a bonding experience like Elizabeth and Mary? What was the impact for you?
9. Pray for and with one another.

The Harbour - I Am the Life

I Am the Life

The Harbour

play

03/23/25 • 34 min

This morning, Sarah Lyew continues the "I Am..." series with "I Am the Life". There is a fascinating connection between God's breath and the life that he gives us which she explores here. Also, you might be tempted to get Mike's side of the story of their proposal.

Please find the slide deck for this week's teaching here.

Home Church Questions:

1. When is a time in your life you felt fully alive? What was it like? Why that moment?

2. What stood out to you from Sunday's teaching?

3. Read Genesis 2:4-7. What does it mean for God to "breathe life into" Adam? Does it matter that it was God’s breath?

4. There is a close relationship between breath and spirit in both the Greek and the Hebrew texts. Sarah referenced the intimacy that comes with our spirit and our life breath. What’s your understanding of 'spirit'? Do you think we have one? What’s the difference between my spirit and other parts of us?

5. Read John 19:28-30 and Luke 23:44-46. Jesus giving up his spirit and breathing his last breath both reference the Greek term 'pneuma' ('breath'). Sarah suggests there’s a connection between Genesis 2 and these accounts. The first existence of our spirit and the salvation for our spirit are both brought about by God’s breath. How do you see the connection? What is the significance of this?

6. Read John 20:19-23. The Spirit is referred to in the Greek as both paracalete ('advocate') and pneuma ('breath'). The breath of Life, bringing New life. Looking at the Trinity through these connections, what do you see?

7. Read Romans 6:1-7 and 8:1-4. What does it look like to live a new life? What is the promise made through Jesus’ death and life? How does it impact you?

8. Pray with and for one another.

10/20/24 • 48 min

This morning we welcome Colin McCartney of Connect City to our community to share a teaching on Mark 10, specifically the portion about Jesus welcoming the children. There is also a brief Question-and-Response portion after the teaching with Colin and Sarah Lyew. You may notice that we've gone out of order again. That's alright! We'll come back to Mark 8 and Mark 9 in subsequent weeks.

1. Colin offered the following quotation from Neil Postman: "Children are the living messages we send to a future we will not see." What does this mean? How can it inform the way that we think about our present moment?
2. What stood out to you from Sunday's teaching?
3. Read Mark 10:13-16 (ideally in multiple translations). What stands out to you from this passage?
4. Why do you think the disciples tried to turn the kids away?
5. What are some ways in which we try to keep Jesus all to ourselves?
6. Why do you think Jesus was indignant?
7. What does it look like to have a church that belongs to the next generation?
8. What does it look like to bless generations that come after us? In other words, what does it look like to build a church for our great grandkids? What kind of church do you hope to leave behind?

10/13/24 • 29 min

Today, Sarah Lyew takes us through Mark 7 paying special attention to the strange story of the syrophoenician woman. Why did Jesus initially decline to heal her daughter? What can we learn about our own callings through this story?
Please find the slide deck for this week's teaching here.

2. Can you think of a company that lost its purpose/why? Did it grow their company?

4. Read Mark 7:24-30. What stood out to you? After listening to Sarah’s teaching, did the story make sense?
5. Jesus could have done a lot of things with His time on earth. From what you know of the gospels and Jesus, what would you say Jesus’s purpose was? Why do you think that’s what he was focused on?
6. What is essential for someone to know their purpose?
7. Sarah suggested that you have a place in the Kindgom where your wiring and purpose matter. It can change with the seasons and as you grow, but that you have a gifts and a story that when combined with purpose can allow the church to carry out its purpose. Do you believe that? How would your closest person describe your gifting? Your purpose?
8. Do you feel like you have a place to use your gifting in the Kingdom? What would that look like?
This week, are there some spots in your life where you need some clarity? Do you know your gifts? Your passion? Take some time to journal and reflect on questions you have about yourself and where Jesus’s invitation into the Kingdom is for you.

The Harbour - Mark 6

Mark 6

The Harbour

10/06/24 • 40 min

This morning, Sarah Lyew takes us through Mark 6. While there are lovely stories in this chapter about Jesus walking on water and feeding thousands of people, Sarah instead helps us sift through the messiness of King Herod's life decisions.
Please find the slide deck for this week's teaching here.
Home Church Questions:
1. If you have favourite reality show, what is it? If you had to be on a reality show, which one are you most likely to get accepted to?
2. Read Mark 6:14-29. What stood out to you? What questions did you have?
3. Sarah gave an overview of Herod’s family life and suggested that generational sin had been passed down. How did you see that impacting Herod’s life?
4. When you hear the term "generational sin", what do you think of? How does that phrase sit with you?
5. What do you think drew Herod to seek out John the Baptist? Have you experienced moments where God was drawing you close? How did you experience that?
6. Sarah gave examples of what she saw competing for Herod’s attention. What are other things in our lives that compete with God’s invitation to draw close? How do those things impact our decisions? How does it impact our relationships with ourselves, God and others?
7. How do you think Herod’s life could have looked if he had given up everything and turned towards John’s calls to repent?
8. What are fruit that you see that point to a life chasing Jesus?
9. How does community impact your decisions? Where does that fit in your life?

This week take moments to check in with Jesus--try and be honest with Him and yourself. Are there areas that He’s trying to draw you close but you may be letting other voices compete? Is there someone in your life that you trust that you can be honest with?

The Harbour - Advent 2: Zechariah
play

12/08/24 • 29 min

This morning, Dave Blow considers the story of Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, and the hope that can be found within our doubt. This builds upon the story of Elizabeth from last week. Please excuse the brief moments at 5:39 and 26:01 where the mic cuts out temporarily. Don't panic! Dave returns shortly. We apprecaite your patience with us as we figure everything out.
Please find the slide deck for this week's teaching here.
Home Church Questions:
1. Thinking back, what is a Christmas memory where you found it just so hard to wait? Was there a special present that you just had to have?
2. What stood out to you from Sunday's teaching?
3. Read Luke 1:5-25. What stands out to you from this passage?

4. Was there a time on your personal journey that you really needed to hear from God? Did it happen? How did it impact your faith journey?
5. As a community of faith, we sometimes choose not to believe in God's promises or, at least, to be skeptical about them. Did any of the potential reasons for our unbelief resonate with you? (eg, the preacher DB often likes to run ahead of God thinking he can figure life out on his own. Sometimes he hears God Say ”How’s that working for you?”)
6. Can we balance the act of placing our order with God to achieve a desired outcome with the concept that we belong to God and that he wants the best for his children?
7. Please take a moment to pray for our community and each other. I sometimes feel overwhelmed when I open my emails each morning and see the need around us. I know that God is bigger than all of this. Let’s claim this together as a community of faith.
