Mark 8
10/27/24 • 28 min
Today, Sarah Lyew takes us through Mark 8. What did Jesus mean when he told us to take up our cross? What does it mean that if we want to save our life we will lose it?
Please find the slide deck for this week's teaching here.
Home Church Questions:
1. What’s the first thing you say when introducing yourself? What is the most significant thing about you? OR... Have you ever had expectations of something and it was wildly different? How did you feel? Was it a good difference?
2. Read Mark 8:27-38. What stood out to you in this passage?
3. Peter declared Jesus the Messiah, but had the expectation that this would include overthrowing the current social system and the colonial oppressors in Rome. How do you think he was feeling as he declared Jesus the Messiah? Why do you think he rebuked Jesus?
4. Do you think Jesus’ response to Peter was harsh?
5. How would you describe what “following Jesus" is?
6. What do you think Jesus meant in verses 35-36?
7. What does picking up your cross look like for you?

Mark 10
This morning we welcome Colin McCartney of Connect City to our community to share a teaching on Mark 10, specifically the portion about Jesus welcoming the children. There is also a brief Question-and-Response portion after the teaching with Colin and Sarah Lyew. You may notice that we've gone out of order again. That's alright! We'll come back to Mark 8 and Mark 9 in subsequent weeks.
Home Church Questions:
1. Colin offered the following quotation from Neil Postman: "Children are the living messages we send to a future we will not see." What does this mean? How can it inform the way that we think about our present moment?
2. What stood out to you from Sunday's teaching?
3. Read Mark 10:13-16 (ideally in multiple translations). What stands out to you from this passage?
4. Why do you think the disciples tried to turn the kids away?
5. What are some ways in which we try to keep Jesus all to ourselves?
6. Why do you think Jesus was indignant?
7. What does it look like to have a church that belongs to the next generation?
8. What does it look like to bless generations that come after us? In other words, what does it look like to build a church for our great grandkids? What kind of church do you hope to leave behind?

Mark 10
This morning, Dave Blow revisits Mark 10 to focus on the story of Jesus speaking with the Rich Young Ruler and the cost of discipleship. How are we to understand material wealth in light of the Kingdom of God? Many thanks to Brooklyn for reading our scripture today!
Please find the slide deck for this week's teaching here.
Home Church Questions:
1. How are you navigating the AI world? Do you find it useful? Are there
dangers in becoming too dependant on it?
2. In Sunday’s teaching, Dave said, “We’ve been taught to read it [the Bible] as
a hierarchical text through the centuries by powers and authorities that
wanted it read as a narrative of divine subservience.” What are the dangers
of reading the scriptures with this 'top down' approach?
3. Read Mark 10:17-27. What themes in this passage stand out to you?
4. Money Money Money. How do we sort it all out? Can material wealth and
following Jesus coexist? Why or why not? What does that look like in this
day of such need?
5. Can you share an example of material blessing being used to further the
agenda of Jesus?
