Presence

I recently got an invite to a party. That invitation was followed up with a request for no presents for the person whom they were honoring. They simply wanted our presence. You have probably felt that same sentiment from time to time. One of my favorite pastimes is bow fishing. I don’t own a boat and I don’t really ever plan to. When people ask me why, the answer is simple: I enjoy bow fishing the most because of the presence of my closest friends. Going by myself would not be nearly as enjoyable – not by a long shot (no pun intended). The presence and fellowship of people that I love and respect is what makes the experience so much greater.
As a therapist I have often felt frustrated that I don’t have the right words or correct therapeutic intervention. I have placed a lot of pressure on myself attempting to do things in just the right way. While I won’t say that technique and words are unimportant – we certainly know that words can be healing or they can be devastating to people – I think we often miss the point when we focus too much on those things. What is it that all of us need the most? Presence. We need people to be connected to us.

The Figmental They
Welcome to Friday Refresh brought to you by Liberte Ministries at www.TravislovesHaiti.com They never worry. They never get tired. They never feel burdened. They have the an unwavering faith. They don’t mess up. If they touch it, it always turns to gold.
Do you know these they’s?
Does thinking about them keep you awake at night because you can’t figure out how they do it. How do they manage it all so perfectly?
Who are they?
After working in the church for 23 years and working in mental health for over 15 years I can say with confidence that “they” don’t exist. They never have. Sure they may do somethings near perfectly at times - but not everything.
When you compare yourself to the theys of the world you find yourself feeling less. Sometimes maybe worth-less.
You feel less because you compare yourself to a utopian family or individual that doesn’t exist.
They don’t exist.
But He does.
And He is the only one that ever did anything perfectly. And really He even struggled. But through His- Jesus’ —struggles you can find relief.

The Luckiest Man Alive
As he stood at home plate and addressed the those in attendance and those watching at home he said: “Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth...” A few minutes later as he concluded his speech he said “I may have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for.” The statement is something that has gripped my attention on more than one occasion. Here is a man who has been at the top of the athletic world. Out of the millions of kids that play baseball, he made the majors and played 17 seasons. Out of all the players in Major League Baseball, he was voted to the All Star game 7 times. And as if that wasn’t good enough, out of all the players in the major leagues including all those chosen for to play in the All Star game, he had been the MVP not once, but twice. We all face battles. Whether it’s health, relational, occupational or otherwise. They aren’t easy and they aren’t fun. But one sure fire way to ward off the negative aspect of the battle is to focus on the blessing. And if you are willing to look - you will always find there is a blessing connected to the battle.
