The Design Brief - Is Fiverr Worth it for Graphic Designers?
play

11/10/18 • 8 min

Is Fiverr worth it for graphic designers trying to gain more clients and make more money? I know there are a lot of designers that are getting jobs and making money on Fiverrr, but is it worth it? ►►►Get the Checklist and Join the Facebook Group below. ► Click here to download the Design Business Checklist! ( http://bit.ly/designbusinesschecklist ) ►Join The Design Brief Facebook Group to be a part of a community of designers looking to grow their careers and businesses! ( http://bit.ly/thedesignbrief ) I want to talk about a few key points on getting more clients and making money as a graphic designer with and without Fiverr.com. Right now many graphic designers that are getting started in the industry are flocking to Fiverr in hopes to strike a mass amount of clients in order to make a living as a graphic designer. I have seen a lot of designers do so, with fairly meager success. Let's clear up a few misunderstandings on what it means to work on Fiverr and more ways to gain clients and get a leg up in your graphic design career. First off I do not think that Fiverr.com is ruining the graphic design 9industry. I think it is giving people who have always wanted an affordable option for graphic design services the opportunity to get those services without beating up professional designers one on one. They can just go to Fiverr and get the affordable services they desire. Fiverr is not pulling any substantial business away from the graphic design community, but rather pulling away from people who are not serious about getting a tailormade solution for their businesses and organizations. If you are a designer who wants to give a "Quick Fix" for companies that just need a one-off job than Fiverr may be for you, but if you want to develop longterm design clients Fiverr is not the place to be. Another thing I want to make clear is the reach that Fiverr actually has to connect you with clients. If you talk with MOST business owners, local business owners especially, you will find when asking them if they have ever heard of Fiverr.com you will get crickets... What I mean is that they have NEVER heard of Fiverr.com. So, if your potential clientele have never heard of Fiverr.com and you are on Fiverr.com are you going to make them a client if you are only on Fiverr.com? NO! So the real question is what got you to the platform? Advertising is what got you there. I have found myself tempted by the idea of using Fiverr.com because I see the Ads all over the place. It seems like the place to be if you want to get design clients! But truly the advertising is geared toward digital marketers, and online business jockeys. Which is only about 10 - 20% of the worlds businesses. So that means you are missing out on 80 - 90% of businesses if you are only looking for graphic design clients on Fiverr. "Ok, Ben if Fiverr is so unprofitable than what should I do to get design clients? Because I still need design clients!" I am glad you asked! Why not take some of the time you were going to use to set up accounts on ALLLL of these different Freelancer websites and going out to some local businesses and offer some preliminary graphic design services at a discounted rate to get them in the door. Express to them that you want to offer this discount to work with them and if they want to continue working with you after that Job it will increase to your normal rate, but you want to show them the value of your design. Maybe they are struggling to market their business and you could collaborate with a digital marketer to start running some Facebook Ads for them. There are a lot of ways outside of Fiverr to begin to develop long term designer/client relationships. That is another side note. If you get a client on Fiverr they are not YOUR client, they are Fiverr's client. Building long term design relationships is key to a sustainable business. Another great way to get more design clients is to hone in on a specific niche. Say, construction, or

The Design Brief - Why Did I Buy a Used 2015 Macbook Pro in 2019?
play

10/14/19 • 8 min

Should you buy a used MacBook Pro in 2015? I get a lot of questions about buying used MacBook Pros considering the steep cost of a brand new one. ►►► Check prices and specs below...►►►

⏩ 2015 Macbook Pro

► ► Amazon - https://amzn.to/2LIgeOD

The MacBook Pro has been considered the premier creator machine for well over 15 years. Student, veterans and self-taught gurus have flocked to the MacBook Pro for its design aesthetic, performance, and innovation. However, over the years, we have seen substantial price increases within the Macbook Pro 15 in and 13 in line-up.

Due to these price increases, I have designers and video editors reaching out to me on the daily asking what they can do to get their hands on a MacBook Pro (or MacBook Pro alternative). Many designers have asked me if an older generation MacBook Pro will still stand the test of time. With all of the developments in software calling for more and more power will how will an older model handle these demands?

The Design Brief - SSD Vs HDD Hard Drives for Graphic Designers
play

10/30/18 • 5 min

So SSD Vs HDD Hard Drive for Graphic designers, what is the difference between the two and what is best for your laptop or computer. It comes down to two important details... ►►► Check out the gear discussed in the video links below... Computer with SSD and HDD Combo ► VivoBook Pro ( https://amzn.to/2JrXz5I ) ► HP Omen ( https://amzn.to/2RiTXpo ) ► MSI GS63 Stealth ( https://amzn.to/2OfcwbZ ) External Solid State Hard Drives ► Lacie External SSD ( https://amzn.to/2AAgfNO ) ► Samsung External SSD ( https://amzn.to/2OXaLW9 ) Computers with SSD Only ► Gigabyte Aero 15 ( https://amzn.to/2CPc0zo ) ► MacBook Pro 15 ( https://amzn.to/2DfV6Lo ) ► Dell XPS 15 ( https://amzn.to/2ObuCM8 ) In this video, I want to answer some questions I receive on the channel concerning solid state hard drives vs hard disk drives. A lot of people are wondering the differences between SSD and HDD. Graphic designers are wondering what is best for their laptops and computers. Which type of hard drive should they get? Should they get 256GB of Hard Drive storage or 4TB? Is SSD really more reliable than HDD? Let's jump into it! What is the difference between a solid state hard drive and a hard disk drive? A Solid State Hard Drive has no moving parts. Think about a small USB Drive, Thumb drive, or Memory stick (whatever you refer to them as). This is basically a miniature Solid State Hard Drive. You can add files to it, erase the files, format the drive, etc... and there are no moving parts to perform these actions. The HDD or Hard Disk Drive, however, uses a small disk, a tiny eye (to read the disk) and an arm to move the eye across the disk as it spins round and round. This is how memory is stored, retrieved and then erased. So on each type of drive how is this information retrieved, saved, written, erased, etc... I will give you two scenarios to visualize this process. 1. The Hard Disk Drive: Imagine that I want to know how to spell the word ambiguous, but I am unsure how to spell the word. Is it Ambigus, or Ambiguoos, perhaps it is ahmbiguos...? I look towards my bookshelf spot the Thesaurus or dictionary on the shelf, get up, walk across the room, grab the thesaurus, flip open to the A's and find the word ambiguous with its proper spelling. 2. The Solid State Hard Drive: In this same scenario I want to find out how to spell ambiguous. But rather than getting up and grabbing a thesaurus off the shelf I simply pull out my iPhone and search ambiguous definition. I was not required to get up and search for this information with moving action. I simply search for the result where I was sitting. So let me ask you. Which search technique gave me a faster result. The SSD model. With no moving parts, the storage is not required to "Find" the piece of information. It is simply there and ready to retrieve when searched upon. Another important factor to SSD Hard Drives vs HDD Hard Drives is that they are far more reliable. With no moving parts, the hard drives are FAR LESS likely to crash, wear out, or malfunction. This is very important to me as a graphic designer. I often am working on projects that I CANNOT afford to lose. So having the reliability of an SSD hard drive is extremely reassuring as I am working on my projects. DISCLAIMER: ALL LINKS IN DESCRIPTION ARE AFFILIATE LINKS Thanks for Supporting Our Channel!

The Design Brief - Dell G7 Graphic Designers Review
play

10/09/18 • 10 min

Talking about the Dell G7 in this video, the question stands, is the Dell G7 a good laptop for graphic design? This is a graphic designers review of the Dell G7, let's talk about it... ⏩ Get the Dell G7 ( https://amzn.to/2QAZB5K ) Does the Dell G7 bring enough power and usability to make a great graphic design laptop, and on a medium-sized budget? This is not a cheap laptop by any means but it does fall under the budget category in my perspective? In this review, I am going to look at four essential aspects of the Dell G7 to test it's ability to stand as a worthy graphic design laptop: Connectivity, Usability, Performance, and Durability. 1. Connectivity Connectivity is the first aspect I am going to talk about with the Dell G7. It is important to consider the ports available on the side of the laptop when you are making a buying decision. I use the ports on the side of my Dell laptop daily, if not multiple times per day so I find it essential to have the available ports that make my day more productive. The ports available on the sides of the Dell G7 are HDMI, USB, USB-C, Thunderbolt, SD Card, and Headphone jack. In my opinion, this graphic design laptop contender has everything you need to call itself a suitable fit for designers. 2. Usability How important is it that you have a laptop that is usable and easy to maneuver from your home to the office, from class to class, or from airport to airport? For some graphic designers and creatives, in general, it is essential to have a lightweight machine that is easy to carry from place to place. The Dell G7 is not a thin laptop in my opinion compared to say the Dell XPS 15 or the MacBook Pro. So if you are looking for an ultra-thin laptop look elsewhere. The Dell G7 is not a thin laptop, but this could pay off to be a substantial benefit to someone less concerned with weight and size and more concerned with performance. (Coming later in the post) 3. Performance The Dell G7 has great connectivity, decent usability, but what about its performance. Is this laptop equipped to handle the heavy lifting of programs like Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro? The Dell G7 comes with 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, the 8th Generation i7 Processor, and a GTX 1060 Max-Q Graphic Processing Unit. This computer is not only up to par but supersedes my benchmark for a qualified graphic design laptop. Remember early when I was talking about the Thickness and weight of the Dell G7 being a possible benefit to someone looking for performance over usability. Well, because this laptop is thicker than most laptops featured to graphic designers it allows the powerful GTX 1060 Max-Q Graphics Processing Unit to receive more breathing room. This allows the fans to work with far better efficiency, allowing the laptop to run cooler and faster! 4. Durability The Dell G7 has a build quality that is a step below the laptops I wholly stand behind. Because most of the high-end laptops offer a mix of metal-alloy or metal-alloy plus carbon fiber this laptop does not quite kick the budget category. But if it was built with Metal and Carbon than you would not have such a great buy on your hands at the price. So, in this case, you have to look at the performance of the machine more than the aesthetics. A soft and durable sleeve plus careful hands will keep this machine protected. ------- DISCLAIMER: ALL LINKS IN DESCRIPTION ARE AFFILIATE LINKS Thanks for Supporting Our Channel!

The Design Brief - TN Panel Vs IPS Screens for Graphic Design
play

11/06/18 • 9 min

TN Panels Vs IPS Screens for Graphic Design, which screen is better? I receive a lot of questions every day about screen quality and which screen is better so I wanted to put out a video. ⏩ Computers below with TN and IPS screens to choose from... TN Screen Laptops ► MSI GS65 Stealth Thin ( https://amzn.to/2PfBopk ) ► MSI GE63 Raider ( https://amzn.to/2PExztv ) ► Asus TUF FX504GD ( https://amzn.to/2PN7hVI ) IPS Screen Laptops ► Dell XPS 15 ( https://amzn.to/2APTk1j ) ► Gigabyte Aero 15 ( https://amzn.to/2OsDehj ) ► HP Omen ( https://amzn.to/2yTyblc ) ► MacBook Pro ( https://amzn.to/2Da347M ) ► Check your current Computer: ( https://www.notebookcheck.net/ ► Video Mention about Color Quality ( https://youtu.be/zvYXaMHzwc8 ) If you are specifically interested in WHAT IS THE BEST SCREEN FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN? Are TN Panel screens really THAT BAD? Then you are in the right place. In this post, I am going to talk about TN Panels, IPS Screens, PLS Screens, and VA Screens. I am going to talk through the practical steps to buying the right screen for you. So sit back, and enjoy some tech talk on today's video/post. The first thing I want to say is that all screens have their intended uses. So that means that one screen is not BETTER than another, but it may, in fact, be better suited for a specific person and their use of the screen. So please pay close attention as we are going through the list of screens and screen types. 1. TN Panel The first screen I want to talk about is the TN Panel screen which stands for Twisted Nematic. These screens are low weight, low cost to produce, and lower power consumption. These three aspects make this screen a prime choice for nearly every computer producer. They hit all of the desires of your average consumer. 2. IPS Screens In-Plane Switching (or IPS) screens are the screens that will give you deep blacks and bright colors and you are going to get crisp colors from whatever angle you view the screen. Please note that these screens cost more to produce, they will drain more power from your computer and they are less responsive than TN Panel screens. Now, how accurate are these IPS screens. Are they 100% color accurate. let's talk about it quickly. Color accuracy from your screen to say a website, ebook, or any other digital asset is going to be very accurate from an IPS screen that is HD or 4k. If you are looking to print a design and you are expecting 100% color accuracy you may find that you are not seeing the color accuracy you desire... Why?! There are major differences between screen-based colors which are RGB (Red-Green-Blue) and printed colors which are CMYK (Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Key). 3. PLS Screen The PLS (Plane to Line Switching) is basically Samsung's version of the IPS screen. PLS screens are known to be a little bit brighter by about 10% and they are going to cost about 15% more to produce. So if you see your computer has a PLS screen rather than an IPS screen, you are in good hands. 4. VA Screens The last screen type we are going to talk about is the VA (Vertical Alignment) screen. This screen is a happy medium between the TN Panels and the IPS. Basically, it will not be as bright as the IPS screen but it will save power like the TN Panel. It will not save AS MUCH power as the TN Panel, but it won't be a power drain like the IPS. This screen is a great middle of the road for someone who wants GOOD color quality and GOOD performance. In conclusion, all of these screen choices are good, but the question is which screen is best for you! That, my friend, is your choice! it is all up to what fits your needs best. The Design Brief - New 2018 Mac Mini Graphic Designers Review
play

11/29/18 • 8 min

You're interested in the New 2018 Mac Mini and you want to know if this is a good computer for graphic design. Well, you came to the right place. I am going to review the 2018 Mac Mini for Graphic Designers. ⏩ Link to the 2018 Mac Mini and Show Notes below! ► New 2018 Mac Mini ( https://amzn.to/2KKrZRu ) - 16GB RAM, i7 Processor, 1TB SSD Alternatives to the Mac Mini ► Alienware R7 ( https://amzn.to/2DRwyIg ) ► CUK Continuum ( https://amzn.to/2DSTqXU ) ► HP Pavilion - Small Desktop ( https://amzn.to/2E6gZNu ) ► MSI Trident - Slim Desktop ( https://amzn.to/2Qp4ceN ) Currently I work as a graphic designer and digital marketing manager where I use the Mac Mini on a daily basis. I am going to walk you through some of my frustrations with the current Mac Mini that I use and why I think this the New 2018 Mac Mini could be a solution to the problems that I have on the daily. What does my workload and software use look like each day while using the Mac Mini? I am normally working out of multiple Chrome browser windows with multiple tabs open on those windows. I am an avid user of Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. I would like to use all of those programs at the same time, but unfortunately, due to the lack of power in the current Mac Mini, I am using I can usually only open when Adobe software at a time while also using Chrome with the open browser windows. The reason is two-fold. The i5 Processor combined with a meager 8GB of RAM. The RAM memory is what is used to deliver the ability to use multiple programs at the same time. For instance, when I open Photoshop and begin to use the program I am usually pulling anywhere from 3 - 6 gigabytes of RAM memory. IF my computer only has 8 and the Chrome browser is 1 - 2 then that only leaves my computer with 1 maybe to gigabytes to use. You can now see where the issue lies. The Mac Mini becomes quickly overloaded and I get the spinning rainbow of DEATH. Now, how is this overcome with the NEW and improved 2018 Mac Minis? Well, I am glad you asked! The new generation comes with a few options for you. You can get either 8, 16, 32, or 64gb of RAM. An i3, i5, or i7 processor. As well as 128, 256, 512GB, 1, or 2TB of Solid State hard drive. So immediately we see the increase in power and opportunity for much better performance. I would not recommend getting this computer with anything less than 16GB of RAM and the i7 processor, and 512GB of solid state Hard Drive. I think this is a great machine, but for the cost, I find that there are equally powerful computers that will do the job for graphic designers at a fraction of the cost. The Mac Mini is an interesting computer. Its size is its leading benefit. For those how are not able to purchase a BIG tower due to spacing limitations, the Mac Mini is a fabulous solution. The only issue comes when you consider the build and its relation to how it performs because of that build. The Mac Mini has no vents on the side of the computer. Because of this it does not allow the fan to pull a great deal of air across the processor to cool the processor and retain peak performance. So rather than running the fan faster and trying to cool the computer, the Mac Mini throttles back the performance to control the temperature. When you look at a standard tower from other companies you will find a large vent with a large fan along with plenty of space inside the computer housing. This allows a lot of airflow over the key components to cool them and keep your computer running FAST. So those are my basic/introductory thoughts on the 2018 Mac Mini if you want to listen to get my full review you can listen/watch on YouTube or via the Podcast! ------- Support My Channel With Patreon! ►►► ( https://www.patreon.com/bengkaiser ) SOCIAL Twitter ► @bengkaiser Facebook ►/bengkaiser Instagram ►@bengkaiser DISCLAIMER: ALL LINKS IN DESCRIPTION ARE AFFILIATE LINKS Thanks for Supporting Our Channel!
