The Chey and Pav Show: Teachers Talking Teaching - Season 1 Episode 25: Poetry

Season 1 Episode 25: Poetry

The Chey and Pav Show: Teachers Talking Teaching

play

03/07/20 • 36 min

In Episode 25, Chey and Pav talk about poetry, and the evolution of the strand in their Language Arts programs. Poetry can be an area of the language program that some teachers don't feel comfortable teaching, since it is such a topic of vulnerability. Chey and Pav talk about how they have gone out of their comfort zones to develop a great program for students, and really put in the time and effort to learn the ins and outs, so that they don't feel out of place, and so that they are able to do a great job teaching the unit to their students.

There are many ways that students can use their voice and choice in order to work on and present their poetry. Teachers can use a lot of accommodations for students so that they do not feel nervous or awkward about presenting their poems to the class. They can be presented in many ways, overtly or more privately as well. They can write about so many different things, and in many different styles, and using different mediums, too. The good thing about poetry is that there is no real right or wrong, so we can emphasize that to our students as well.

Pav talks about the concept of Insta-Poetry and the idea that younger generations have connected to poetry because of its quick and visual availability on Instagram and other Social Media platforms. Since it is so easy for people to write short poems and make them instantly available to readers and followers, it is easy to therefore receive instant feedback.

Chey and Pav welcome Melvin & ShaRon Dukes, from the After School Talk Podcast for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment.

Chey talks about his Poetry Soiree from his classroom before wrapping up the episode.

The Chey and Pav Show: Teachers Talking Teaching - Season 1 Episode 14: Administration and School Culture

Season 1 Episode 14: Administration and School Culture

The Chey and Pav Show: Teachers Talking Teaching

play

12/07/19 • 27 min

In Episode 14 of The Staffroom, Chey and Pav talk about what qualities they look for from the Administration in order to foster a positive school culture. They discuss 5 different qualities that they would like to see in the school leadership team, so that the students get the best possible experience from their day. The first one is Permission to be Vulnerable. Teachers want to know that their principals and vice-principals are okay with teachers making mistakes in the classroom - because mistakes are a signal to show that they have tried something difficult and perhaps outside the box. It’s okay that it may not have gone right, but they made an effort to make a positive change, and potentially build relationship, and that is what is most important. The second is Trust, and allow teachers to have Voice. Teachers are have valuable and valid ideas, and good things come out of allowing teachers to run the show the way that they want to run it. The third thing is relationship building. Teachers appreciate the basic pleasantries - the check-ins are meaningful and always help teachers feel more at ease with their day. Freedom is the fourth item on the list - teachers often have great ideas, but aren’t given the freedom from their administration to act on their ideas. Teachers should be allowed to do some things outside our the mainstream so that students gain rich experiences. Micromanaging is what kills a lot of creativity in classrooms. Number 5 is Vision. Administrators need to have a clear, passionate and student-driven and focused vision. If the admin has a strong vision, teachers will buy in, and they will work for it. Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, The Punk Rock Classroom Podcast. They welcome Michael Earnshaw and Joshua Buckley, the principal and teacher combo with their podcast, that tests the mainstream and brings some Punk into their classroom. Chey and Pav give some examples from their experiences with many different administrators in the past, how the list works and is put into action. “Remember to Inspire, don’t Require, and always be a Humble Servant” ----------------------------------------------------- You can Check out our 3 Enlightened Minutes Guests: The Punk Rock Classroom Podcast at: Twitter: @PunkClassrooms Michael Earnshaw @mearnshaw158 Joshua Buckley @joshRBuckley ----------------------------------------------------- Chey and Pav are part of the School Rubric team. In Episode 82 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about Financial Literacy. It is a topic that has been newly added to the Math Curriculum in Ontario, and many teachers have scrambled on how to teach it, even though many agree that it should be included in the curriculum. What kinds of supports do we need to effectively help students with this topic? How should teachers even go about teaching it when they haven't received any professional development on this topic? In Episode 43 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about where they find sources of inspiration for their Podcast episodes. They discuss two particular sources, a current events curating app called Flipboard, and an app that allows for easy borrowing of ebooks and audiobooks from the public library called Libby.

Chey talks about his use of the Flipboard app. With this app he is able to select interests for the stories he sees on the board. Then he can flip through many articles and blog posts, opinion articles, editorials to be able to put together a "magazine" of his own. This magazine can be made public or it an be private, or shared with a select few individuals. It becomes a great way for Chey and Pav to be able to share articles with each other, which offer lots of discussion topics for the podcast.

Pav talks about the about the ability to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from the public library system using an app called Libby. Overdrive is another common one that allows borrowing. The app allows you to put several books on hold, and several can be borrowed at a time. It has made it easier to read many of the amazing books that are available for leadership and education. Pav talks about a few of the books that she has read.

Chey and Pav introduce Joey and Kerri, owners of 25/8 Coffee from Texas, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Joey and Kerri talk about their coffee company that gives back to teachers purchasing supplies for their classrooms.

After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up by discussing a few of their favourite takeaways about their favourite places to get some inspiration for the podcast!
