The Chey and Pav Show: Teachers Talking Teaching

In Episode 25, Chey and Pav talk about poetry, and the evolution of the strand in their Language Arts programs. Poetry can be an area of the language program that some teachers don't feel comfortable teaching, since it is such a topic of vulnerability. Chey and Pav talk about how they have gone out of their comfort zones to develop a great program for students, and really put in the time and effort to learn the ins and outs, so that they don't feel out of place, and so that they are able to do a great job teaching the unit to their students.

There are many ways that students can use their voice and choice in order to work on and present their poetry. Teachers can use a lot of accommodations for students so that they do not feel nervous or awkward about presenting their poems to the class. They can be presented in many ways, overtly or more privately as well. They can write about so many different things, and in many different styles, and using different mediums, too. The good thing about poetry is that there is no real right or wrong, so we can emphasize that to our students as well.

Pav talks about the concept of Insta-Poetry and the idea that younger generations have connected to poetry because of its quick and visual availability on Instagram and other Social Media platforms. Since it is so easy for people to write short poems and make them instantly available to readers and followers, it is easy to therefore receive instant feedback.

Chey and Pav welcome Melvin & ShaRon Dukes, from the After School Talk Podcast for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment.

Chey talks about his Poetry Soiree from his classroom before wrapping up the episode.

Season 1 Episode 24: The 6 Habits of Super Learners

In Episode 24, Chey and Pav reflect on a popular article that was in circulation this past week titled The 6 Habits of Super Learners. It was a fantastic article highlighting 6 areas to develop if trying to develop or learn a new skill. The duo started the episode by going over the traits, which include: 1. Super learners tend to read a lot, 2. The learning process is a journey, 3. Learners have a growth mindset, 4. They are able to teach others what they know, 5. Effective learners take care of their brain, 6. Learners take breaks, early and often, during their learning.

Pav and Chey proceed to go over a few of the traits that stood out most to them. Pav started by talking about Students being able to teach one another things that they have learned in order to reinforce their learning. Chey followed up with the value of reading as much as possible in order to gain as much knowledge and understanding as possible. Pav continues by discussing Brain health and some of her own experiences with super foods, and Chey wraps up by talking about the importance of rest and sleep for brain health.

Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Bradlee W. Skinner, who talks about the importance of the inclusive classroom, particularly with theatre.

Chey and Pav wrap up the episode by talking about a few concepts that they felt could have fit into the article as extensions. Pav brings up the idea of Discourse, and Chey talks about Pacing, with regards to learning.
