In today’s episode I interview Anjuli Obaro about her career change journey to landing an ideal role and securing a pay rise at the same time.
What you’ll learn:
- The importance of getting clear on your values
- Staying committed to the goal even When life happens
- How to reposition your experience to attract different opportunities
Getting clear of your values- Anjuli took the time to get clear on her values early in the career change process which made it easier for her to identify opportunities that were ideal for her.
Staying committed to your goals - Anjuli made her commitment to change her career and leaving her 10 year teaching career in 2020. Despite her plans to transition promptly life happened! She was forced to press pause on her plans but was committed to make her change regardless of how long it would take.
Two years on and she was able to make a transition that allows her to live the flexible life style that she desires as a mother of two.
She made honoured her commitment and kept taking action (even if small at times) to ensure she achieved her goal.
Sometimes you need to slow down, but know that if you stay focused you will achieve your goals.
Reposition your experience to attract different opportunities- Initially Anjuli had no idea how her teacher experience would translate in other settings or industries.
She took the time to learn about different opportunities through research and networking.
When she identified two roles that she was interested in different industries, she had to position her experience differently for both roles.
Through making targeted applications which focused on the needs of the role and goals for the organisations she landed two compelling roles and had the opportunity to choose.
If you are on a career journey, be inspired and know that your ideal role is out there waiting for you!

# 189: Be Proactive And Start Building Your Legacy
In this episode I am reflecting on the Queen and the impact she has made and the legacy she has left behind.
I think this is very relevant in terms of our individual journeys - there's so many lessons that we can learn from her life and how she proactively worked to leave an incredible legacy.
What are you committed to? The Queen was committed to her role and duties for 70 years. She was ill but up until 2 days before she passed, she was still committed to her duties.
It made me ask the question: what I am committed to? I'm going ask you the same: What are you committed to when it comes to your career?
Through the work that I do with women from around the world, in different industries, and from the feedback I get from Podcast listeners, I see these women wanting to get somewhere or wanting to make some kind of move, but they are not necessarily taking action. And the reasons are " I don't have enough time", "I don't know what I want to do" or " I don't know how to position myself".
My question is: is that the real reason?
Because often there's a surface reason but when you pull back the layers, there's another reason that's ultimately holding you back.
People often say, "I don't have time to dedicate to my career development", or "I don't have time to figure out what is it I want to do next". But then they spend lots of time on social media. When we consider the average person spends 90, 000 hours at work in their lifetime, I think figuring out what you should be doing and where you should be and how you can be best doing the role should be a priority.
If time is an issue, my question is: can you do an audit on your time to really see where you are spending your time and are you spending your time in the right way?
Let's make sure the time we have is time well spent. Fast forward and say, "when I'm in my old age what do I want to be able to look back and say what I have achieved". It can help to focus on what you should be doing NOW so that you build a career that you can look back and be proud of.
What you will learn:
- How to manage your time effectively to achieve your goals
- How to be proactive in working towards your career goals
- How to gather data to help support your decision making and gain awareness of where you need to be investing your time.
How to manage your time effectively to achieve your goals - learn to prioritising your time now will make it easier to achieve your goals in the future. The days turn into weeks, the weeks turn into months and the months turns into years.
How to be proactive - Start creating opportunities for the roles or careers you want. Liaise with people who already have the experience which you might lack. Be strategic by surrounding yourself with people who could help you get to where you want to be.
Gathering data - Doing an audit based on where you are and where you want to be is a great way to gather data that can really benefit you by creating awareness on what is is you should be focusing on and where you should be investing your time and efforts.

# 191 - The Identify Shifts That Must Happen If You Want To Make A Career Change
In today’s episode I am diving into the identity shifts that must happen if you want to make a career change.
I've had so many conversations with clients who say they want to make a career change but they don't have the relevant credentials, discredit the experience that they already have and talk themselves out of opportunities before they do any divining to really assess if they could be a good candidate.
One of my clients kept herself with a box, she couldn't see herself doing anything different, despite the fact that she had the credentials, the experience and met all the criteria. She didn't take on that leadership identity initially. Once she did the work and started to look at things differently and separated who she is from what she does, new opportunities started coming her way.
What you will learn:
1. The importance of identity shifts - when you can separate who you are from what you do it is easier to be open to new possibilities
2. Leverage your varied expertise - The experience that you have gained elsewhere can be relevant and welcomed in the new are that you want to move into. What you already have can give you an edge and help you to stand out.
3. The power of selling your value - Once you recognise the objective of the organisation and the purpose of the role you're less likely to consider whether you are "good enough?" and more likely to focus on whether you have a track record of figuring things out. Organisations are more concerned with the value that you bring, than you probably realise.
