Dom L'Amour looks back on the second season of The Black Man Talking Emotions Podcast.
Ever wondered how to balance the demands of work and personal life while still giving your best self to loved ones? Inspired by a powerful James Baldwin interview, we reflect on the importance of nurturing relationships with acts of service and presence, even after a tough day. This episode of Black Man Talking Emotions wraps up season two with a heartfelt discussion on balancing professional and personal responsibilities, providing insights that are especially relevant in today's challenging work environments.
The joys and sacrifices of parenthood are front and center in our next segment. My guest shares the emotional fulfillment of watching their children grow and discuss the natural inclination to prioritize their needs. Special guest Shannon O'Keefe, recounts her transformative journey from finding solace in dance to achieving a fuller sense of happiness outside the entertainment industry. This conversation offers a rich exploration of love, responsibility, and self-discovery within the family unit, highlighting the progress we've made since our college days.
Lastly, we explore the serene beauty of the Japanese green tea ceremony and its mindful approach to caffeine consumption. Personal anecdotes weave through our discussion on adapting this ancient ritual into daily life, reflecting on the cultural nuances and community care in Japan. From the intriguing belief in animism to the communal mindset that emphasizes care and respect, we consider how these cultural practices can inspire a more intentional and respectful way of living. "The Black Man Talking Emotions Podcast" Starring Dom L'Amour - The Question Game for Mother's Day

The Question Game for Mother's Day

"The Black Man Talking Emotions Podcast" Starring Dom L'Amour

Send us a text

I had the privilege of celebrating Mother's Day by inviting the queen of my heart, my mother, onto the Black man Talking Emotions podcast for a tribute unlike any other. Our conversation is a tapestry woven with the threads of intimate revelations, laughter over shared musical soul-ties like Prince's "Adore," and the profound longing to connect with loved ones lost to time. It's a journey through the corridors of our past, revisiting the safety of childhood memories and the echoes of old traumas, all while playfully speculating about a future where time travel might just be on the itinerary.
The heart of our dialogue beats in sync with the pulsing desires and dreams that have shaped our lives. My mother's candid reflections on her aspirations, from envisioning a serene life as a stay-at-home grandma to the yearning for an odyssey across Europe's historical tapestries, draw you into the essence of her spirit. We muse on the seasonal charm of fall, the enchantment of the Green Tree Festival, and the cinematic escapes that bind us, from the nostalgic grip of a Thriller jacket to the escapades of "Independence Day." By pulling back the curtain on our emotions and aspirations, we hope to offer you a mirror reflecting the universal pursuit of joy, the enduring strength of dreams, and the unbreakable bonds of family love. Join us for this Mother's Day special, where emotions run deep and aspirations soar high.

Alcohol, Education, and the Spirit of LA

"The Black Man Talking Emotions Podcast" Starring Dom L'Amour

Send us a text

Dom L'Amour speaks with Jacob Buckenmyer (@jabucke) about Drinking, The California Fires, Education and so much more!

What happens when you mix the heart of Los Angeles with an exploration of emotions, food, and culture? I'm joined by my friend Jacob Buckenmyer to unpack the myths surrounding LA’s identity, especially in the face of the California fires, and to challenge the stereotype of it being just a playground for the elites. We dive into our personal journeys with alcohol, from growing up in a dry household to those wake-up calls that made us rethink our habits. Jacob’s stories are both candid and relatable, painting a picture of how environments and experiences shape our perceptions and choices.
Food lovers, prepare to challenge your understanding of dining! We share contrasts between Italian leisurely meals and the fast-paced American food culture, inviting you to rethink what it means to truly savor a meal. Our conversation touches on deeper themes of generational influences and how the scarcity mindset can shape our approach to food. These reflections serve as a springboard to discuss the broader cultural narratives that influence our consumption habits and how childhood teachings linger into adulthood.
We also venture into the educational landscape, highlighting the gaps in traditional teaching methods and the need for practical life skills in school curriculums. The conversation shifts toward political discourse and the resilience found within LA’s diverse communities. With a spirited nod to the film industry and the Star Wars saga, we celebrate storytelling, collaboration, and the enduring spirit of Los Angeles, revealing a city that is much more than its Hollywood facade. Join us in reflecting on the narratives that shape our world and the communities that bring them to life.

Unwrapping Humor with Cameron Keys

"The Black Man Talking Emotions Podcast" Starring Dom L'Amour

Send us a text

Dom L'Amour speaks with little cousin Cam AKA @_cameronkeys about

Comedy, inspiration, our upbringing, and the future.

Ever wonder what it takes to captivate a room full of strangers with nothing but your wit? Join me as I sit down with my incredibly talented cousin Cam, who has spent the last nine years mastering the delicate dance of stand-up comedy. Together, we unravel the threads of authenticity and originality that hold the power to transform a good joke into a great one. Cam's journey from rehearsed one-liners to genuine, off-the-cuff storytelling reveals the raw honesty that truly connects a comedian with their audience. We also tackle the contentious topic of joke theft head-on, probing the ethical lines in the quest for laughter and the pursuit of a unique comedic voice.
The path of a stand-up comedian is peppered with applause and silences, and Cam and I don't shy away from either. We recount the cringe-worthy memory of a gig in a barbershop where the clippers buzzed louder than the laughter, alongside the triumphs of evenings where every punchline hit home. Our conversation weaves through the tapestry of emotions that a comedian endures, balancing the scales of resilience and vulnerability. As we reminisce, we pay homage to our upbringing and the comedic giants who've inspired us, highlighting the way family and humor often intertwine to shape a performer's destiny.
Wrapping up the episode, heartfelt thanks go out to each listener who's joined the Black man Talking Emotions podcast. Special nods to Carl Christian Flores for his wisdom, and a call to keep the laughter alive by following Cam on his comedic odyssey on Instagram. We hint at future collaborations and the growing community we're nurturing; a space where stories are exchanged, and humor is a shared language. So, keep your ears tuned and your spirits ready for more laughter-laden conversations to come.

Finding Balance: Self-Care, Music, and Pandemic Lessons with Michael Harvey

"The Black Man Talking Emotions Podcast" Starring Dom L'Amour

Send us a text

Amid the chaos of the music industry, how does one find the perfect equilibrium between self-care and discipline? Join me and my good friend, musician Michael Harvey, as we unravel this balancing act on the Black Man Talking Emotions podcast. We explore the crucial role of self-care practices like journaling, therapy, and meditation while emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries and taking time for yourself outside of work. Discover how paying attention to the details, whether in music or life, becomes a game-changer in maintaining happiness and harmony.
The pandemic reshaped lives globally, and the St. Louis music community was no exception. We share personal anecdotes about navigating through the pandemic's challenges, from the shared panic at grocery stores to the somber losses within our music family. Yet amid the turmoil, opportunities emerged—new collaborations on country music projects and mixing church broadcasts, to name a few. Our reflections highlight the pandemic's dual nature, as a time of both loss and unexpected growth, reminding us of the shifting landscapes we now inhabit.
As we venture into professionalism and discipline, parallels emerge between a band and a basketball team: each member has a unique role contributing to the greater success. We reminisce about wedding gigs, where dedication and preparation were key to delivering standout performances. Recording studio memories offer a glimpse into a journey fueled by musical chemistry and creative freedom, celebrating unexpected talents and cherished collaborations. As the episode wraps up, gratitude flows for our listeners and supporters, inviting them to continue this journey of boundless music-making and connection.

I love my Godbabies! I have three.

1-2-3, Zoey, Eliza, Lola, those are my girls.

Hopefully some day I’ll be able to give them the world.

1-2-3, those girls were made just for me.

to adore,

to learn,

to change.

It’s strange, I didn’t have any signal or warnings,

But now when I wake up I see their faces every morning.

1-2-3, they’re just cute as can be.

They make me laugh,

The make me cry,

They open my eyes to everything around me.

Crazy that I’m talking about somebody else’s kids.

They don’t share no blood with me.

But, See we are linked by a brother from another mother.

With VERY different beliefs,

but we both believe you treat friends like family.

1-2-3, my babies are all I need.

I was smiling while i wrote this.

And I bet myself I’d be smiling during My reading to y’all.

See, all year long I’ve had a system to fall asleep.

When I’m in bed I always count my blessings Instead of sheep.

And for me, those blessings always starts with, 1-2-3

Midseason 2 Check In

"The Black Man Talking Emotions Podcast" Starring Dom L'Amour

Send us a text

Dom L'Amour has a mid season check in.

Navigating the tumultuous waters of a creative life, I've often found myself at the mercy of my own inner critic and the unintended barbs of loved ones. This episode is a raw exploration of my mid-season journey, where I lay bare the struggles and triumphs that have shaped the narrative of my life and work. You're invited to experience the vulnerability of an artist who wrestles with the distractions of a digital world and the pressure-cooker environment of art as a business. From the valleys of self-doubt to the peaks of proud accomplishments, join me as I dissect the complex dance of maintaining personal relationships while pursuing the relentless demands of creation.
As we peel back the layers of my artistic process, I reflect on the sheer determination it takes to bring a new album into existence. It's a balancing act of innovation and authenticity, promotion and genuine connection—a challenge I willingly embrace in the pursuit of musical storytelling. And in this space, we also shine a light on the importance of mental health, extending an arm of solidarity and gratitude to those like Derek Statten, who've walked with me from the very beginning. So tune in, as we foster a community that not only listens but truly hears, and together, we champion the conversations that draw us closer to understanding the emotional depth of the human experience.
