The Balut Kiki Project - Project 13: Surviving Depression (June 2021)

Project 13: Surviving Depression (June 2021)

06/29/21 • 53 min

The Balut Kiki Project

This project contains mature and sensitive content. Listener discretion advised.

8 out of 100,000 Filipinos commit suicide each year.
Every 40 seconds, a person somewhere in the world successfully commits suicide.
Majority of them are aged 15-29 years old.

Despite the playful name, this podcast was borne out of severe depression and previous suicidal ideation. In what is perhaps our most personal episode yet, The Balut Kiki Project confronts the reality of living every day with a diagnosis of severe clinical depression and the thought of suicide looming constantly and persistently overhead.

It is high time we normalized conversations about mental health and removed the stigma.

It is about time we cared.

(If you are a Filipino living in the Philippines and you, or somebody you know, are undergoing depression or having suicidal thoughts, try talking to somebody you trust or please go to the link:    DOH NCMH Crisis Hotline . It's okay to ask for help. )

If you are listening to us on Apple iTunes, Podchaser, PodcastAddict, etc., please leave us a rating and a review. The reason we ask this is because this helps us appear on searches much quicker and allows people to discover our podcast easier so we are able reach and empower more.

Better yet, please tell a friend about us, especially if that friend needs to relate to somebody going through a tough time, like we all sometimes do. Let them know they're not alone.

Send us an email ([email protected]) if you have any questions, want a shoutout, or have suggestions on how we can improve on the podcast. We love hearing from all of you - keep them coming!

12: Worth The Wait (An Unexpected Love Story)

Hey Bessie, send us a text message!

Once upon a time...
Girl meets boy. They bear a love child. Sadly, the love between girl and boy did not last.
Girl meets girl. Magic happens.
So, anong problema? (Let girl count the ways.)
First relationship niya ito with another girl – love nga ba ito?
Nasa Australia siya while other girl is established in Singapore.
Walang marriage equality sa Australia.
Will love child approve?
And naku, papano kung ang ending ay zero physical attraction pala? Kabog yan!
This is not a lesbian love story. This is just a love story, period. Love is love nga, diba?
Let’s stop with the labels na. It may take some getting used to. But let’s start here.
It’s time the world heard our stories. One story at a time.

14: Loving With Alzheimer's

Hey Bessie, send us a text message!

Nag-uulyanin. Second childhood. Bumalik sa pagkabata.
Sa Pilipinas, iyan ang mga tawag natin sa taong may Alzheimer’s Disease - isang sakit, isang diagnosis. While everybody forgets something every now and then – a word, where you last put your phone, the name of a person you went to school with – ang taong may Alzheimer’s in its late stages finds it hard to even carry out a simple conversation, or even respond to their environment to survive from day to day. Without question, it is devastating on the person suffering from it.
Pero gaano kahirap ito para sa pamilya ng taong may Alzheimer’s? Gaano kasakit to realize that your once independent, strong-willed, breadwinner of a parent cannot even feed herself anymore, or even tell you na she is in so much pain dahil may broken hip na pala siya? Isang Bessie natin sa The Balut Kiki Project ang magkukwento sa atin how it is to live with – no, LOVE – keep loving somebody who has been suffering from this debilitating disease.
Oo, napanuod natin sa Tanging Yaman. Na-enjoy naten sa Netflix K-drama na Navillera. Na-touch tayo sa McDo commercial ng “paborito kong apo – si Karen”.
Pag-usapan natin, mga Bes. Usapang mental health ulit tayo. Tara, let’s have a heartfelt kiki about Alzheimer’s.
