The Balut Kiki Project

The Balut Kiki Project

The Balut Kiki Project

Tuloy lang, mga Bes! We are an international award-winning Filipino podcast by fabulous members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Our goal is to normalize and de-stigmatize conversations that Pinoys generally only talk about in secret - mental health problems (like depression and suicide), sex, sexuality and the human body, non-traditional relationships, among others. "Balut" is a Filipino delicacy consisting of a fertilized developing egg embryo that is boiled and eaten from the shell. So, we aim to make our episodes nutritious though they are not for the faint of heart. While "kiki" is queer slang for a gathering among friends. Kaya we throw in discussions about queer culture and interests - because why not, diba? We are uniquely PINOY. We are unapologetically QUEER. Join your hosts Mel, Geoff, Nealle together with Peter, Morey, Kenny, Choi, and a bevy of other Bessies! Winner, BEST PODCAST HOST, 1st Asia Podcast Festival Awards, Singapore.

The Balut Kiki Project - Project 13: Surviving Depression (June 2021)
play

06/29/21 • 53 min

This project contains mature and sensitive content. Listener discretion advised.

8 out of 100,000 Filipinos commit suicide each year.
Every 40 seconds, a person somewhere in the world successfully commits suicide.
Majority of them are aged 15-29 years old.

Despite the playful name, this podcast was borne out of severe depression and previous suicidal ideation. In what is perhaps our most personal episode yet, The Balut Kiki Project confronts the reality of living every day with a diagnosis of severe clinical depression and the thought of suicide looming constantly and persistently overhead.

It is high time we normalized conversations about mental health and removed the stigma.

It is about time we cared.

The Balut Kiki Project - 20: Ang Teacher Na Nagbenta Ng Aliw
play

08/17/21 • 58 min

Hey Bessie, send us a text message!

Aka "Confessions of an Ex-Sex Worker". Shempre, MATURE CONTENT WARNING, mga Bes!
Teacher Tim has a past he's not ashamed to talk about. After all, it's led him to and helped him with his current career as a proud sex educator. Listen as he talks candidly about his journey from being an Ateneo grade schooler to accidentally landing an escort job while working in retail to being an advocate for the LGBTQIA community in Toronto.
Exciting talaga ang kiki - from talking about his childhood dream to growing up in a conservative Filipino family eventually immigrating to Canada, to his not-so-accidental foray into (gasp!) escorting.
How did he protect himself while he was escorting? At ano ang nagbunsod sa kanya na mag-shift careers from sex worker to legitimate sex educator?
(Uyyy. Yung nagbabasa nito may balak yata mag- change careers! Aminin!)
Pakinggan natin ang bago nating Bessie na si Tim Lagman, host of his own podcast Sex Ed with Tim, habang kinukwento niya ang kanyang nakaraan sa pagbebenta ng aliw and his inspiring career-change story.
"I'm an open book with open legs!", sabi ni Teacher Tim.
Aber, makilatis nga!

The Balut Kiki Project - Project 31: Addicted to Drag (Part 2)
play

11/02/21 • 56 min

Pagpapatuloy lamang ito ng ating maharot na kikihan with drag super queens Miss Clea Torres and Miss Maria Christina!

Matapang nilang sasagutin ang mga nabiting issues from the previous episode like having sex in drag, the business of tucking and the inevitable 'accidents', at ang laban at pakikipagtagisan ng galing, ganda, at talento ng mga Pinoy drag artists versus the best of the rest of the world. Alamin natin: may laban nga ba ang mga reynang Pinoy versus the likes of Bob the Drag Queen, Monet X Change, Brenda del Rio, Violet Chachki, Aquaria, and so on?

Must-listen ang 2-episode serving of artistic realness ng Project for aspiring drag artists and creative minds. Clear the runway, tuck your prejudices away, and prepare to wow-ed and, ehem, blown away!

The Balut Kiki Project - Project 32: Mother and (Queer) Child
play

11/09/21 • 36 min

Any queer person will tell you this. This is true whether you're gay, trans, lesbian, etc. You alone against the world ang background music forever?

Aminin!

Our friend, Malen, married to a man who comes from a staunch Catholic family teeming with priests,  kikis about how she dealt with the news when her adult son confessed to her what she had suspected all along: that he was queer.

Malen offers fighting words of advice and a little bit of admonition to queers out there who might be wallowing in self-doubt and pity, and searching for acceptance, love, and belongingness.

"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?" (Isaiah 49:15)

Buma-Bible din kami pa-minsan-minsan, mga Bes! Kinakaya naman.

The Balut Kiki Project - Project 33: 4 Queens, 4 Queers (Unang Yugto)
play

11/16/21 • 59 min

Well, well, well! Look do we have here!

Vilma. Nora. Maricel. Sharon.

Our answers have been prayered! Isang rabid Noranian. Isang avid Vilmanian. Isang true-blue Sharonian. At isang solid Maricel fanatic.

Kaya’t pasasaan pa ba na ang random friendly discussions about movies which would sometimes escalate into friendly debates ay mapupunta sa isang episode kung saan, once and for all, magtatapatan sila para sagutin ang mga hamon na: Who is the starriest stariray of  them all?
Sino ang best actress? Who is the most versatile? Sino ang pinaka-mayaman? Who has the most fulfilled family life? Who will leave the most endearing and invaluable legacy in Philippine cinema?
Oh yes, time is of the elements sa project na ito!

Ang truth of the mother is, faney ang apat nating queers ng lahat ng reyna na yan – meaning, they are all certified admirers of the four queens. Pero for all intense and purposes of this project, they will take up arms in defense of their chosen idol and tell us bakit sila naging tagahanga ng napili nilang reyna. In short, they will bring down the house down!

World peace!

Because when all is said undone, it's mute and academic! Anna Dizon is Anna Dizon!

The Balut Kiki Project - Project 34: 4 Queers, 4 Queens (Ang Pagtutuos)
play

11/23/21 • 48 min

And we're back! We will repeat this again once more for the second time around from the top!

Narito na ang ikalawa at huling yugto, the finale, ang pagtutuos ng 4 Queers to get the last word in para sa 4 Queens!

What was their queen's impact on their very personal coming-out journey? And shempre, nanjan ang kanilang final statement kung bakit ang reyna nila ang karapat-dapat na hirangin na "the best", "the greatest", and "the one and only".

Kaya love, love, love! And, their choices are personal and should not be deemed as "the definitive" on the queens' best, most, or worst.

Yes, world peace! And last time we checked, Anna Dizon is still Anna Dizon!

The Balut Kiki Project - Project 36: Surviving Depression (December 2021)
play

12/07/21 • 57 min

This project contains mature and sensitive themes such as depression and suicide. Listener discretion is advised.

On this project, we continue to update you on where we are on our mental health journey, warts and all.

We kiki about some misconceptions about mental illness, and the misuse of important language that we ourselves are guilty of. Do you know it is no longer correct to use the term "successful or unsuccessful attempt" when pertaining to suicide? Neither did we, until very recently. Yes, language evolves but it remains to wield great power so it is vital that we all know how to use it. And find out why the overuse of the phrase "it's okay to not be okay" rubs these two people with clinical depression the wrong way.

If you are a Filipino living in the Philippines and you, or somebody you know, are undergoing depression or having suicidal thoughts, try talking to somebody you trust or please go to the link:    https://doh.gov.ph/NCMH-Crisis-Hotline . It's okay to ask for help.

MATURE CONTENT WARNING. Push lang ng push to normalize contextual conversations about sex and our sexuality and to fight the demonization of our bodies.

Let's sort out common myths and fallacies about the penis and figure out fact from fake. May benefits nga ba ang masturbation and how much masturbation is too much?

May Pinoy pride ba pagdating sa battle of the world's largest titi?

Makikipagsabayan din tayo sa ibang podcasts with our own unique take on the audio-horror genre sa pamamagitan ng ating TITI NG LAGIM - horror stories involving the penis, including erectile dysfunction. And because Christmas is just several jingle balls, este, bells away, pag-usapan natin ang ibat'-ibang mga PALAMUTITI or penile ornaments!

It's time for the titi to take center stage sa ating Usapang+Sex Series!

The Balut Kiki Project - Project 35: LGBTQ+ Profiles - Robert Kingett
play

11/30/21 • 61 min

When Robert Kingett  was born, doctors said he would never walk. They said he would never talk.  He was born severely premature, with cerebral palsy, and totally blind.

Today, his bio reads: Award-winning author. Journalist. Editor. Blogger. Activist. Motivational speaker. Accessibility advocate.  Sensitivity reader. And yes, fabulously gay!

He makes us ask, "Gurrlll, watchu been doin' with yo life?!"

Robbie candidly kikis with us about his childhood and how, with the help of his grandparents who nurtured his curiosity and challenged him, he was able to survive the physical, emotional, and mental trauma he suffered at the hands of his own mother, and triumph over his disabilities.

And no - this is no sob story. Robbie shares with us his stories about growing up gay, crushing on the "husband" he's never even met, maneuvering through his dating life and his idea of a first date, and what he enjoys about porn.

He also shares with us some of his many advocacies, like how he pressured streaming giant Netflix into making their content more accessible to its visually-impaired audience by adapting audio description.

Robbie was endearing and such a joy to talk to. We fell in love with the child-like giggles that punctuated most of his sentences. Easily one of the most inspiring people we ever had the honor of speaking to.

Don't miss out on getting to know this amazing human being.  Click play and be inspired!
